Week 11: backup QB scoreboard

I didn't see the case game but if it's like any of his others they lost in spite of him throwing bombs for TDs to WRs who haven't scored all year. In a world where every fanboy's reason for losing is "my favorite QB needs heeeeeelp he can't win without heeeeeelp..." it applies to Case the most.

How in the world is Matt not a starter in this league void of even decent QB play for 2/3 of the teams?

Because no one is going to pay a 40 year old quarterback or give him a contract to be the starter. Plus I'm sure Hasselbeck was just fine collecting a check sitting on the bench lol.

If GMs are solely basing it on his age and not his play then they are silly. He is playing better than half the QBs in the league right now.

I don't think anyone is expecting a guy like Hasselbeck to hold up for 16+ games a year. If watching Peyton Manning this year taught us anything, it's that Father Time catches up to you when you least expect it. And I'm not taking anything away from Hasselbeck, but I don't think many people see him as a full time starter. He is a very capable back-up.

But Matt looks like the polar opposite of Manning. He moves well, has command out there, makes good decisions and has the come back gene in him. He has a lot more going for him than many starters. But you are right in that most GMs probably figure he can't hold up for the whole season at his age.

That's the truth....Matt is one of the Top-25 QBs in yardage all time and for one game, he can be as good as he ever was.

But he cant do it for 16 weeks at his age because you dont recover as fast

I saw a little bit of the Case game. He was in a world of pain suffering an obvious concussion on the field at one point and they kept him in the game until the very end.

Nick Foles will definitely be starting next week. Keenum didn't look confident at all during the game.

Keenum suffered a concussion some time in the game and they kept him in until the very end. Very wrong move from coaching. I don't think he will be able to start next week.

I didn't see the game, but if it was so obvious, it is puzzling how the 'spotter' and concussion specialists on the sidelines did not see it or intervene with their concussion protocol testing.

Trying to hide an injured player from them will get the (not so positive) attention of the league front office, with certainty.

Yates should start the rest of the year even if Hoyer is healthy but I'd put money that O'brien will start Hoyer when he comes back and if he does I bet the Texans go down hill.  Hasselbeck has been great, Osweiler looked solid yesterday as well.  It's always nice to have a back up that can get you a few wins.  Look at the Cowboys.  I bet they wish they had one of these guys.  They couldn't even get one win without Romo!

Simple answer and it's not because GM's wouldn't take him as a starter.

It's because Matt doesn't want to be a starter.

Look at what happened when he was released from the Titans.  On March 18, 2013 Hasselbeck is released by Tennessee.  On March 19, 2013 the Colts sign Matt Hasselbeck

Matt didn't wait any time signing with a new team at all.  He didn't look for a team who might be looking for a short term starter.  He didn't even look for a team that had question marks for it's starter where he might be able to win the starting job later on after the starter screwed up enough.

He didn't do any of that.  In the space of only 1 day he's in Indy signing a contract that he knew regulated him to backup duty behind Luck.  He purposefully took on the job of backup tutor.

Honestly I have to give him props because when he's called upon he's prepared and he plays well, but it's very clear from his actions that Hasselbeck wanted to earn a paycheck from the bench.  He doesn't want to be any team's starter.

Now if he where a young QB we might say he's unmotivated and he'd be unattractive for even a backup job.  But at his age you can sort of accept that and see where he's coming from.  Why subject his body to a full season's pounding until his entire body craps out under him (like Peyton's has) when you can chill on the bench and make 3 million a year.  It's not like he's so good that any team is going to hold on to him for any length of time.  He would essentially be a really old Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Hoyer jumping from team to team for 1 year stints as the starter.

As I detailed in my post above, it's more of the 2nd then the first.

He could have essentially spent the remainder of his career as a 1 year rental for several teams or he could sit on the bench, not get hit and make only slightly less.

Actually in the case of Ryan Fitzpatrick it's not much less at all.  Ryan Fitzpatrick's getting 3.25 M for his 1 year stint in New York.  Matt's getting 3 M in Indy.  Hoyer's getting in the 5 M range.

I do give him credit though for a guy who's basically only in the league for a paycheck at this point (purposefully avoiding teams that would make him the starter) he's prepared and plays well when asked.

I was impressed Mark. He led the comeback and made the GWD. That was not Houston or Jax from a month ago either.

I like Matt H, too.....Best backup QB in the league..

But when you look at this season..

Andrew played at Buffalo..Andrew played at Carolina.....Andrew played NE..Andrew faced Denver.

Just trying to keep his 3-0 record in perspective

    • Am hoping either RDE Umanmielen or Tyler Baron is available on Day 1 but NT Walter Nolan is tempting option.    Day 2 MLB Boettcher or WLB Mondon Jr/Oliver    R3 MLB Bruener or WLB Bissainthe if he declares.  Also may look at a QB like KJ Jefferson.  RB Woody Marks or RDE Bogle are needs.   R4 NT Slackman   R5 RDE Juncaj, NCBs Hancock, Castro or Knowles II. LDT Burch. LDEs Joyner, Batty, Diggs.   R6 RT Crenshaw-Dickson R7 NCBs Ja’had Carter or Zion Childress   End of season am hoping we can resign C Kelly and both TEs Granson and MAC.  Granson does remind me of TE Gadsden II from Syracuse R2 projecting. Smith at RT can be moved free up cap space.     Outside of drafting CBs Revel or T. Hunter, LCB A’marion McCoy, RCBs Marshall Jr or Muhammad am not too inpressed with this draft class.  Hopefully we add a proven player(s) in FA.
    • It’s the RPO game plan. However, I’ve said it for years - Taylor does much better running out of the single back formation.   Does anybody have a way to pull up statistics on this? Taylor’s YPC shotgun vs singleback?
    • Revel was a top corner for sure.  My next best RCB probably wouldn’t be found until R4.  Hate to see another young man get injured with first round talent.
    • A lot of us do but.....  The colts had like 20 candidates for the head coaching vacancy and Harbaugh wasn't one of them..
    • Remington or Winchester
