Boston FD tragedy close to home for Brady

Two firefighters were killed in a Back Bay blaze yesterday just a few houses down from Tom Brady and Giselle Bunchden's home.

Brady went on sports radio this morning and said:

“I’ve lived in the Back Bay for a long time and that was one of the scarier days. I feel so badly for the families of the two fire fighters that were lost and obviously all the men that were associated with fighting that fire yesterday losing one of their close friends. We as athletes think we’re heroes, but when you witness seeing what I saw yesterday you realize who the real heroes are in this world. That’s the people who work hard to protect our lives and protect our safety and our freedoms in America, and certainly the firefighters and Boston Police and the State Troopers.

“I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Sad day in Boston, and kudos to Tom for nailing it with his comments.

Sad news

Indeed. It was a crazy windy day, which is apparently how the fire spread and got out of control so quickly. The two who were lost were running a hose down to the basement of the building when they were overcome by the fire. I have a lot of friends who are firefighters and when something like this happens it really hits you upside the head with some perspective. I complain about having "bad days" when my boss is a jerk or a client is upset... that means so little when you hold it up to what these men and women do.

+1

At least dudes like you and me come home to our families after our bad days at work.  The same can't be said for these fine men.

My husband works in the city and was not far form the fire either. Very scary as you said on a windy day especially. Every day firefighters put it all on the line. I can't think of anything worse then having a fire consume me. I hope and pray their families are doing as well as can be expected.

I applaud Tom Brady for his heartfelt statement on behalf of hardworking firefighters everywhere. Overcoming personal tragedy is never easy, but nevertheless, it is nice to see a superstar QB put hero worship in it's proper perspective. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this, GoPats.

I concur with Tom that first responders do not often get the attention and respect they deserve for putting their lives on the line to help others and I am very proud of Tom for what he said.

I can't help but think that his kind words helped to ease a tiny bit of the pain and grief of the family and friends of those two firefighters.

I agree with Tom, it is awe inspiring to see what fire fighters do

One day a few years ago, the house behind me was on fire

I mean it was a huge fire with flames everywhere and massive smoke clouds all over the neighborhood

Every instinct in my body said "GET AWAY"

But those firefighters headed right in

It was terrifying to watch them do that

Brave does not begin to cover what they do

My thanks and deepest sympathy to the families of the firefighters who gave their lives to stop this fire.

I don't know how this fire got so out of control. But people really need to take fire prevention much more seriously

In the case of my neighbors..........it was kids sneaking home over the lunch hour when their parents were not home and smoking

cigarette in the couch...........burned the entire house to the ground

Firefighters are a special breed of people.  I have a lot of them in my family and I just cannot fathom what they do.  To overcome every extinct that tells you to run and they go running into the fire.

Very sad to hear about the two who got stuck in the basement.  I feel so bad for their families.

Awful day for the city...but the Bruins nailed it last night with their tribute. That's one thing that always makes me proud to live here and be a fan of these teams. Much like this time last year, when things go wrong, they always do their part to help.

i wonder how many athletes actually think themselves as heroes?  Like how does being an athlete make you a hero.?

I caught that and believe he misspoke. He meant people (kids mainly) look to him as a hero not that he considers himself a hero. I've always felt sorry for high profile athletes in the respect that they have to measure every spoken word because some Richard is always waiting to pounce. I'd hate that part and without a doubt screw up constantly.

Tom's human and it hit close.. He was fleeing his home.

    • Bo Jackson is the greatest athlete of all-time, if anyone thinks otherwise, I want what they are drinking . He was a great NFL football player/RB, good Pro baseball player. Could bench press 450 pounds down to chest and up once and run a 40 in 4.1.
    • He is and he is overrated. He is a great player but I could even argue his teammate Brown is better. Let me say this, I know I come off as a Tatum hater, I really am not. He just never performs in the playoffs like a #1 option. Brown won the MVP for example. Take Brown off that team and the Mavs would have definitely beat them then. Tatum is on a loaded team, they have Brown, Porzingis, White, Holiday, and Horford.    Off the top of my head, players that are better than Tatum are: Joker, Luka, Giannis, Embiid, Edwards, SGA, and even Brown - so he isn't top 7. I would even take Brunson and Haliburton over him - they have more responsibility playing PG and are young as well. I have Tatum top 10 - he is slightly better than Butler and Mitchell, Tatum is great but shaky at times, he cracks my top 10 because LeBron, Curry, and Durant are old and Leonard is always injured. Without Haliburton, the Pacers would be a .500 team. Without Brunson so would the Knicks. Without Tatum, Boston would still win 55 games with Brown/Porzingis/Holiday/White/Horford, they could have won around 70 this past season but quit playing the last 2 weeks.
    • Fever are now in 7th, 8 teams make the playoffs. I think they will get in. Clark is great already, I figured she would be. Screw her critics!
    • The whole division stinks except for the Brewers and Cards. Cubs have played like doo doo and are only 1 game out of 3rd place  .
    • This is another reason why we should enjoy our time here and not bicker with friends and family. A life can be gone in a split-second no matter how big and strong anyone is. This is truly sad, and the kid had everything. RIP.   Word of advice, if you are going to drink alcohol, that is fine but DONT DRIVE!
