he's the only sports columnist for the only paper in town. mike chappell is their primary sports reporter

a columnist makes up stories & interpretations of events. a reporter reports facts

When you write negatively about the team (or objectively depending on how you look at it) it may not make the team players look favorably on giving an interview.
