Overview

Three-year starter with back-end-of-the-roster potential as an H-back. Togiai will put in effort as a blocker but simply isn't big enough or strong enough to make much difference near the line of scrimmage. His strength as a prospect resides in his basketball athleticism and his ability to gain leverage and separation as a route runner. He has plus body control and the speed to work past linebackers, but needs the ball thrown accurately because of his limited catch radius. He needs to improve as a move blocker and as a possession target underneath, but he might be an intriguing late-rounder for teams looking to add an athlete.

Strengths

Three-star high school basketball prospect

Good lean and acceleration into routes

Appears to have traits to work the seam despite how he was used

Has feel for leverage and separation at the top of the route

Quick to snap head around and put eyes on the quarterback

Body control and positioning spawned from his basketball instincts

Toughness to complete catches through contact

Athleticism for adjustments and space as move blocker

Weaknesses

Has short arms and small hands for his position

Difficult catches will elude him more than you like

Needs to become a more consistent target in the middle of the field

Play strength will be an issue as a blocker

Defenders work their way across his face from backside

Body control through contact is very lacking

Not a creative runner after the catch

This is a tough one to judge. The staff seem high on Farrod Green, Grimble is a Veteran and Vollert balled out in the Chargers training camp before signing with us. All three of them spent a lot more time in the playbook and on the field as a Colt.

While it may be temporary, they obviously saw SOMETHING that distinguished him over the 3 guys on the PS and puts him inline to play a role on week one?

I hope he balls out and we don't have to bring Burton off the IR until he is 250% healed....

I think it could also be they weren't overly impressed with the guys we put on the PS (Green and Grimble) or the guy we waived (Vollert) and at this point don't have much plans for TEs after Doyle and MAC (and Burton when he returns).  It could be like a 1 week tryout as well.  If he performs poorly, we can always recall Farrod Green or Xavier Grimble.

Pederson in Philly still runs a similar O to what Reich had in place as the OC there and similar to what we run in Indy.  My guess is the Colts wanted to sign this guy as a UDFA and Philly either outbid or he wanted to go there instead.  When he became available (apparently, Philly had plans to get him back to the active 53 soon like we did w/ Chaz Green), Ballard and Co. probably jumped on him just to see what he could bring to the table.

I love that we stole this guy from the Eagles, but I wonder how Noah Togiai feels about being snatched away? The Eagles were supposedly planning to put him back on their active roster ASAP.  He had chosen the Eagles over his other suitors because he wanted to learn from their elite tight ends.

We’ll probably have to keep him on the active roster (or IR if he is injured) all season unless we want to risk the Eagles signing him back.

Considering Reich used to coach in Philly and runs a similar scheme, he should have a smooth transition into the Colts scheme. I think he'll be fine as long as he's a good player.

All very reasonable thoughts!
