Datone Jones ? Derick Shultz talking on NFL Network projects 24th pick

Recommended Posts

Given that Sylvester Williams is likely off the board at 24, D. Jones looks like the next best thing, and is probably the best interior pass rusher not named Shariff Floyd.  Being on the light side, he doesn't command the premium draft position of others but his athleticism and production are off the charts.  Wouldn't shock me if the real pros value him more highly than mock's have.

I seen this too, but I don't agree with him. He's quite a bit smaller than our other DE's and IMO would have to get stronger to play a 2 gap DE in our system. I see him fitting a one gap 3-4 like the Texans play more than our's.

What I seen hes 6ft 4" 283

I wouldn't overlook that our most prevalent nickel package doesn't look much like a 2 gap system - and we are in this look a lot.  I also wouldn't overlook Jones' potential in the Cory Redding role as an every down player, especially since he is likely to add 5-15 pounds in the NFL over time.  Redding was listed at 280 # coming out of college himself.

I think we need the 300+ guys, but this kid is tough.  I went back and forth with Gavin yesterday about Tank Carradine who is 276....

To me it depends on how much we disguise the 4-3....

As you know Jay, I am all for disguise  but really want to see how the 3-4 kicks in with square pegs in square holes instead of the square/round scenarios.

As I said with Gavin, I trust Grigson's decision to go BPA for us, and I will root Jones or Carradine on... analyze and discuss.

:pass:  :pass:  :coltshelmet:  :coltshelmet:  :colts:  :colts: !!!

I seen him listed at 277 which is 18 lbs smaller than any of our other DE's. He could definitely get bigger though, but I still think if Cooper is sitting there, thats who we'll take.

Yeah, he can definitely add some size and get stronger. I'm not ruling him out, I just think there will be better value to us sitting there at 24 than another DE. JMO!

I believe he was 283 at the combine.....

I don't know about the 1-gap vs. 2-gap issue....

But I'll say the same thing I've said about other players....

If he's there and Grigson takes him,  I'm fine with it.    If he's there and Grigson passes,  I'm fine with it too....

I trust Grigs and Pagano on the decision making, think Pagano knows exactly what he wants and needs and will work in his system

I guess I still have man-star on the brain...Jessie...32 inch arms Williams......to have 2 D-linemen demanding double teams....would simply be incredible to watch in a true 3-4.

I went through a Jesse Williams phase myself.  In fact, would still be excited if he was deemed worthy.  However, I've started to see his skill set as much less rare than someone like S. Williams or D. Jones that have demonstrated legitimate interior pass rush explosion. There is a reason why veteran run stuffers are only commanding 1-3 million on the free agent market.  You need 'em but they all start to look alike.  If Jesse Williams is the choice, my hope is that they believe he can offer some Ngata like pass rush ability with development.  Not sure that there is a 1st round future for any D linemen that don't offer some pass rush upside.

This post is well taken Z.

I may be a purist when it comes to 3-4 discussion.  I like the 3-4 DTs to stand em up and provide push, but clog the line of scrimmage to the utmost of their abilities....  Then bring the heat from all angles.  Not stopping the run for over 2 decades has me  starving for stopping the MJDs....that KILL us.

I also know Pagano likes to disguise the 4-3 in there as well, and players such as Jones and Carradine seem capable of being that player.  I like the thought of turning the Sidbury beast loose too :)  My biggest hope is to see Josh McNary give a militaristic effort to making this team....what a story!!!

Sorry this was so long, but I do agree with you....just hungry for Bigs....I am as open minded with this GM than I have ever been!!!  Thanks for the reply!! :colts:  :colts:  :colts:

I've never been on the Jesse Williams bandwagon....    two reasons...

One....   I don't see enough pass rush.    If we're taking a DL high,  then I'm looking for some pass rush.

Two....   I think he's more NT than he is DE....   and I definitely do NOT want to spend a #1 on a NT.    I hear he can play some DE in a 3-4 scheme...  but it's not his best position.

So....   for those reasons he's never been a first round consideration for me.

If we trade back and take him in the 2nd round,  then I'd be more comfortable with that....

To me Jay...I know we are off of your topic, this kid at 250???  Where the heck is it?  MUSCLE!  The kid is a bad a**!!

Freeman was an unknown.  McNary...almost made All American at Army!   I know I am nuts, but I almost wish he was 225 or 230 and converted to safety!  WOW!

I am rooting for him big time.  I am soooo impressed he signed just because we wanted him...  :pass:

One thing that stuck out on Jones was he seems quick, his pursuit was very good, didnt seem to be one to give up on a play

Jones was in one of the first mocks I studied, and I kept seeing his stock rise.  He went up to around 10 or 11 at one point.  I will not be upset in the least with the pick...definitely a pass rusher.  I like him!

I am liking your trade back ideas more and more....See, I told everyone I had an open mind when it was not closed :)

I am rooting for QBs to be taken early....I feel we could get active.  I would really love more picks.

As to Williams, I love the immovable object.  As I said above, I starve for a defense that is unpredictable, and will stuff the run....I feel our LBs are underrated in their pass rushing skills....Conner is vastly mis-used....the kid can HIT....best run defender we have...I want to see him hit the QB.  This is so fun to discuss!!!

I hate to say it, but I always said I would not get crazy on mocks, but I did.  I am still thinking of throwing one on warhorses post....Nah....

In the words of one Silas Robertson....'Homey don't play dat.'

    • I just knew there was going to be a run on WRs later in the first.   welp, hoping we trade up for either AD (character concerns and all) or Troy Franklin.   there is no way we can leave this draft not drafting some type of burner in this deep WR draft.     Welp, can’t be too mad.  We can’t pick ‘em all and I’m ok with who we picked.
    • I haven't paid much attention to the draft and looking OR making mocks 'cause with Ballard you usually will be disappointed...... like most on this Forum are tonight. Lol   But I wasn't surprised by a defensive linemen being picked. I didn't think he would go CB or trade up for a elite receiver or Bowers would fall to 15. And honestly I know noting about Latu  except a few highlights I seen switching from the draft and Yankee game.  I liked the highlights but not crazy about the conference he played in and  his medical history.   I was hoping for Bowers but not surprised he's not a colt especially when Denver chose the last QB and the raiders were right behind them. I heard the raiders liked Bowers and with no QB left to possibly sway them I had a feeling they would grab him. We all know it was unlikely Ballard would trade up for him(even if he had him high on his board?)   Kudos for the bears getting a great prospect, I hope they don't mess him up.  And to the Patriots for getting imo the second best QB. The Falcons getting Pence for life after Cousins(which may be sooner than later) I think was a good move.
    • I mean, i kinda ma because in year 4 Trey had 13.5 sacks and probably way more pressures than paye has had in year 4.  Paye has one more year to show he can be the pass rusher we need.     and only reason why Trey was being compared to Paye is because someone else brought him.  There is honestly no comparison when it comes to their year 4s
    • 5 best remaining WR’s according to PFF   WR ADONAI MITCHELL, TEXAS. Mitchell's fluidity and size make him a tough matchup for anyone, especially in the red zone. ...  WR TROY FRANKLIN, OREGON. ...  WR LADD MCCONKEY, GEORGIA. ...  WR KEON COLEMAN, FLORIDA STATE. ...  WR ROMAN WILSON, MICHIGAN.
    • Falcons probably drafted Penix because they liked him, more than most other players because of the importance of QB position as well.   Note that They didn't draft JJ McCarthy so it shows Falcons staff definitely had their preference, inclination and liking to his QB play more than anyone else.   I think the thumb rule is if a team likes a QB very much, there are chances it won't happen again sooner in future, and even if they like few QBs in near future they may not be in position to draft the players they love.   So, general rule is always draft a QB if you like and when you can - same with Lions last year, and I hope Vikings did the same this draft.
