Washington Run Game.

They just put up over 230 yards on the ground on TB. They dominated the trenches. Does this change your opinion of last weeks game?

I think like the coaches have said all week. It is never as bad as your think it is, Or how good you think it is when you look at film.

Missed protection calls on O and gap assignments on D. The war is in the trenches.

It seems to be one way or the other, we are going to the playoffs, or we stink. Can't just one fan say,

"7-9 or 9-7...no more or no less"

Heh......heh...... ;)

How many first line players were even in the game for either team, and for how long? I suspect very few if any, and then not for long. So, the point is moot since you can't make that comparison.

Bottom line, the last preseason games are really for filling out the bottom of the roster. The teams should give those tickets away because fans aren't seeing NFL games, IMHO.

Think fans are just getting back into the whole "on any given sunday" thought process.... seems like its all about stats and things like that these days... i think the colts have done pretty good so far, they have shown they can dominate lesser teams and keep up with top brass teams.

Colts win the AFC south thats what i say

Morris wasn't even in the game? Or was that because he was a starter?

according to some reports alfredo morris is the starting RB in week 1 for the skins. they dont want to over use Hightower after his injury from last season, helu and royster are recovering from injuries also. honestly in my opinion the skins have a very deep running attack. but shannahan always has as a head coach. he loves to run

I say we are 9-7 wild card team sneak in with the 6th seed.

although a wild card would be nice, i honestly think we win the division in week 17 at 9-7. i think both houston and indy will be 8-8 going into the final game in indy winner takes all. some will call me crazy but thats what i think is going to happen.

Exactly...Shanahan is def a Run first coach...Morris is the starter...I def drafted him for my fantasy team lol but seriously...they have a good team...

Agreed. Shanahan loves to pound the rock. We didn't play as well as we could have, plus Redding was hurt if I'm not mistaken. The results of that game were a culmination of things. In the past we've had games where we get gashed by someone we didn't expect to be gashed by, then the next week we shut down a power running team.

I figure this is a good a spot as any to put this since this has to do with the run game against us but I will give a play by play of Mookie at NT in the Washington game (the run plays only)

Play 1 1st quarter- 14:46 Mookie lined up across from Will Montgomery (#63) drove him sideways 3 yards pancaking him to the ground

Play 2 1st quarter-6:05 3 yard gain by Redskins Mookie on the tackle

Play 3 2nd quarter Mookie got two yards of penetration against Montgomery put him om the ground (Ricardo Matthews got manhandled on that play)

Play 4 5:04 2nd quarter 2nd quarter Mookie gets knocked up to 1 foot (by a double team before working his way through both guys while gaining 2 yards of penetration

Play 5-4:32 2nd quarter Mookie on Montgomery, Mookie threw Montgomery aside but the play was bounced outside were we lost containment, Mookie was chasing the play down from behind but wasnt in on the tackle but was around it. Conner could not get off his block (Made by Trent Williams)

Play 6 3:49 2nd quarter Mookie knocked back 1 yard before spinning free and diving in on a tackle for minimal gain (5 yards because Morris fell forward)

Play 7 2:00 Mookie on Montgomery Worked Montgomery all the way down the to the sideline taking him out of the play (Montgomery's helmet got knocked loose in the process)

3rd quarter 11:57 Mookie on Montgomery, Mookie got two yards of penetration, Freeney lost containment

3rd quarter 11:13 Mookie knocked back a yard sideways before getting free

Our Defensive Ends and OLB's did not do a good job of containing outside runs

The skins' depth is quite a bit better than Tampa's at this point. That was on display quite plainly with the vast majority of both teams' #1s sitting out. Washington is a couple years along into their roster retooling while Tampa is just now going through coaching/scheme/personnel changes. I expect Washington's running game to slow down some once live bullets start flying. They have some issues along that front line that were evident last year. They drafted a couple players in the middle rounds to try and provide competition, but they aren't ready yet. Like Gavin's post above shows, Montgomery gets pushed around too easily. They got Jamal Brown from the Saints a couple years ago to play RT, but he can't stay healthy. Really the only 2 solid starters on that line are Trent Williams (LT) and Chris Chester (LG). RG and RT are in flux. Lichtensteiger (RG) comes back from injury opening day, but who knows what kind of shape he'll be in. Their TEs, Fred Davis in particular, have trouble sealing the edge on stretch plays and that hurts a player like Helu who prefers to bounce it outside. Royster is a better inside runner and those situations don't effect him as much. Morris is a plow, but still pretty much unproven. Hightower was a known commodity and the best pass protector of the three, but after his injury...we'll have to see. They have 4 decent runners, but none of them are what I would call a "complete" running back. Hightower is the closest, but that injury is a huge unknown.

All that being said, I still think the Colts will struggle in the trenches on both sides of the ball, especially being in the first year of a 4-3 to 3-4 conversion. Outside containment I feel might be an issue all year long. Vontae Davis will help that some on runs to his side, as well as Freeney and Mathis growing into their new roles. There is enough beef in the 3 down linemen to hopefully eat up blockers the way their supposed to since they'll be playing primarily 2-gap. Grabbing Redding from Baltimore I think was a good move assuming that knee isn't a long term issue.

All in all, I'm looking around 6-10 for the colts this year. I see the skins finishing in the same ballpark - 6 or 7 wins.

It's gonna be better then last year.So I'll be happy with it. 5-11 to 11-5 I'm truly giving them a pass for this year with new players, coaches and GM, However, I don't think there going to take it.

    • Fun fact: Smith took Mike Tyson the distance, only 1 of 2 fighters to do that when Mike was Champ from 1986-1989. Tony Tucker was the other.
    • I have seen a few clips of Creed 2 on Youtube but never have watched the whole movie. I seen where Drago is in it. I thought Creed 1 was kind of average but I grew up with the Rocky movies with Rocky fighting. As far as the fights between Rocky and Clubber being short, that was fine because there were 2 of them. The way I would rank the Rocky movies would be: 1. Rocky 3 - had more action than any of them and the Creed twist was shocking. Back then there was no internet or teasers, so nobody had no idea that Creed would train Rocky. Mr T was by far the baddest villain of them all. He made people want to hate him. Hulk Hogan was even it who Rocky fought for charity  . Mick even passed away, it all kinds of twists and turns.   2. Rocky 1 - the 1st one because of the storyline. He also went the distance with GOAT = Apollo, nobody ever done that.   3. Rocky 2 - had the best fight, so I can see how that would be #1 in many eyes. That was my mom's favorite because of Adrian coming out of the coma and telling Rocky to win and the fight was the best of the whole series.   4. Rocky 4 - This one was good but not great. They could have made this much better to where it could of been the best of the series. It was kind of unrealistic because no way in real life would Apollo get killed in 2 rounds. The fight between Apollo and Drago should have at least gone 7 or 8 rounds and just show Apollo taking a beating. 2 Rounds = no way. #2, they made Drago out to be like a superhero, Rocky already beat Clubber who was just as strong, so I didn't care for the storyline. The training by Rocky and Drago and the music is what saved that one from being average.
    • I hope we keep Toppin, I didn't think we would. Paul George went to Philly for 4 years/212 Mill, so now we have them to deal with as well besides Boston, NY, and Milwaukee. I thought we were better than Philly before the George deal, not sure now.
    • Thank you for your response and thank you for enlightening myself regarding Partridge. I recall his signing but didn't know much about him until I joined this forum and read several of your posts speaking highly of him. Thank you!  I have researched him since then and have to agree with you, it is likely that his fingerprints were on this signing.    Davis' contract is such that there is no guaranteed money in his 2nd year, with a cap savings of nearly 6.5 million, so there is an out if needed. https://overthecap.com/player/raekwon-davis/8796    I have to think that his main responsibility is as Grover's back up...we all saw how much he was missed last season. Though, this is where Partridge comes in, there may be additional duties. One thing that struck me was when Partridge said (paraphrased) "that he could get Grover some more sacks.". Does that mean he plans to alter the DL scheme, and if so, could the same benefit apply to Davis? Not to mention @Douzer's thoughts of using both Davis and Grover on 3rd and short plus goal line situations...like you said, I am looking forward to watching it play out as well.
    • I'm not saying he is about to be a sack machine but you can see some of his potential as a one gap penetrator with that frame.
