A look at what opposing QB's do before and after facing the Colts

Not only is our defense so bad that it's allowing teams to beat us, it's also so bad that it's opening the eye's of the QB's and giving them confidence to play better ball. This is down right embarrassing IMHO. It's regardless of personnel as we have seen the past 3 years be the same thing. Soft zones with "bend, don't break" mentality that gasses our defense which ultimately results in a lot of breaks. Poor tackling, which is a direct result off coaching, allows huge chunk plays which totally negates playing soft zone.

Lets take a look at how QB's have faired against us and after us, I'll be pairing in PFF stats as well a yardage and passer rating to paint the entire picture. Stats against us will be in blue.

C.J stroud

Completion % 75%/63.%/64.5%/67.5%/73.7

Yards 234/260/215/344/331

Yards per attempt 7.3/7.2/6.9/8.6/8.7

PFF offensive grade 67.9/75.2/64.6/74.5/80.6

Passer rating 115.9/94.7/68.6/110.9/97.6

Malik Willis (this one really hurts because he was a back up who was just brought in)

Completion % 0%/85.7%/68.4%

Yards 0/122/202

YPA 0/8.7/10.6

PFF offensive grade 42.5/71.8/75.9

Passer Rating 39.6/126.8/120.9

Caleb Williams

Completion % 48.3%/62.2%/63.5%/73.9%/69.0%

Yards 93/174/363/157/304

YPA 3.2/4.7/7.0/6.8/10.5

PFF offensive grade 49.1/45.1/57.4/65.6/72.0

Passer Rating 55.7/51.0/80.8/106.6/126.2

Justin Fields

Completion % 73.9/65.0/78.1/64.7/55.6

Yards 156/117/244/312/132

YPA 6.8/5.9/7.6/9.2/4.9

PFF offensive grade 75.9/69.9/75.4/67.0/59.1

Passer Rating 91.9/97.3/96.0/104.0/93.3

Trevor Lawrence

Completion %  57.1%/46.7%/55.3%/54.5%/82.4%

Yards 162/220/178/173/371

YPA 7.7/7.3/4.7/5.2/10.9

PFF offensive grade 75.1/67.5/51.1/57.9/89.8

Passer Rating 97/7/71.5/65.5/89.1/119.5

High completion percentage paired with high yards per attempt is incredibly unacceptable. Looking at the coverage grades from our CB's, they don't grade terribly so that tells me, along with the eye test, that scheme and play calling is the reason. The story has been the same year after year for Gus and team after team. He will continue to be an issue for this team.  He needs to go.

Surely you’re joking. Surely.

What are you seeing?  Other than Lawrence, all QBs posted some better numbers in other weeks.  The passer rating is the most important.  Slightly higher, but its not like they posted great numbers against us then bad numbers every other time.

Fields, Williams, and Willis are having pretty good success elsewhere.  Stroud is too.  Only Lawrence shows dramatic difference, but he's a good QB.

Willams has only looked good against us, and Carolina. Carolina! He hasn’t thrown for half as many yards in a game against anyone as he has against us. And Carolina

Carolina.

We let Malik Willis have a career day.

You really can’t see a pattern forming here?

We had a stretch last year with the Jaguars, Saints and Browns games where we gave 35+ as an average, if I am not mistaken. Hope this Jaguars game isn't the start of another ugly stretch.

I don’t see it with the Titans or Tua less Dolphins. However Weeks 8-10 could get ugly Hou, Min, Bills.

I could see it with the Titans. Levis can rip and Calvin Ridley can still make plays. Levis could well have a big game in that one.

The Dolphins without Tua I agree. There should be nothing go wrong that week. Let’s see if they can pass that test. 😬

Three QB’s in a row had career games against us. Jacobs and Mixon had their best game in YEARS. Idk how else to convey this defense is trash along with Bradley and Ballard to you.

Teams and QBs always get right on us. We need an aggressive attacking defense to match Shane. Gus type of defense doesn’t work in NFL because you can’t protect the soft spots in a zone with big hits. Back in the day cover 3 had holes but you could knock a guy head off to complete a pass , which you can’t do today

Until we get rid of the Gus Bradley scheme and coaching, this will happen every week.

Gus scheme doesn’t work work in 2024 but to be fair guys have to make tackles and players have to make plays. Like how many of them drives is done if a guy makes a tackle etc….

    • Don't know those guys, but trust your judgement on them.   What I do like about McDermott's defense is they play 4-3 + zone but actually attack the offense. A guy like McDermott would likely make a big difference here in very little time with the people we already have.   But you are right, his defenses have folded in big games. Whether that's down to scheme or personnel I don't know.
    • I  personally dont think we even had the talent to play cover 3 or quarters (cover 4)    . the colts get abused in the flats nonstop that is the weakness of cover 3 .   when you add to the fact they cant tackle in space it make the problem worse .  WE are taking our corners and running them deep and having  ss  and line backers covering every thing mid range .   We dont have a true FS  either for it  and putting linebackers and safety covering wrs its not a good look .   its catching bad coverage linebackers in space who go to miss the tackle and give up first downs .     Even on that bomb pass why is flowers biting on the short route when he needs to be playing deep as cross is coming up to cover the short route . Our players cant even keep assignments in the scheme that is supposedly plug and play .
    • I wouldn’t say it’s irrelevant.  They lost by three and that gave the Jags three when it looked like the Colts were going to get three.  That’s a pretty huge shift.  Shouldn’t over shadow the defensive performance at all but it is most definitely not irrelevant.
    • Flowers wasn't lacking speed or agility. He was losing because he made the wrong reads, and bit on underneath routes as a deep third defender. He can't understand Cover 3 clearly. He got cut because he's bad at the corner position, not because of an injury regression.
    • Your son is wise. It was like a preseason game.
