Eagles What Will Be Next For That Franchise?

No one seems to be able to explain the Eagles crash this year scoring 9 points in a playoff game while giving up 32 to TB. One of football's best mysteries. Sad for Kelce, I believe it was said he agreed to play one more year hoping to get to the SB.

Nothing elaborate but my nephew is a huge Eagles fan and a numbers guy. He is saying the defense regressed. They did have a coordinator change mid season and Matt Patricia took over with terrible results. The DL didn’t get pressure like last year and they gave up a lot of big plays on D while the offense sputtered a bit bc of injuries.

Hurts was not as accurate and did not run as well during the second half of the season...just my eye test.  AJ Brown seemed to have critical drops and more easily tackled than before.  The old players on defense finally started to look old.  Beyond coaching and coordination, older player should know how to tackle...and could probably teach the new coordinator how to tackle rather than visa versa.

Some are talking like firing the HC.  I think the Philly water is finding its level after a season and a half of defying it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a team fall this fast.  They were 10-1, and in the previous 5 weeks had beaten the Chiefs, Bills, Cowboys and Dolphins(when they were healthy and hot).

In the final 7 weeks, they looked like the worst team in the league.

This article captures it all:

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2024/1/16/24040139/eagles-sean-desai-matt-patricia-nick-sirianni-nfl-playoffs-buccaneers?_gl=1*1ke6382*

This is why most head coaches wait it out till the end of the season to replace an OC or DC unless your bleeding is of epic proportions. Remember when Mike McCarthy took over and brought over his Packers DC in 2020, Mike Nolan. They were giving up points left and right. Even then, Mike Nolan was not fired mid season.

You gave up points in 2 consecutive games to some elite offenses in the league, did Steichen fire Gus Bradley after that 3 game stretch vs Jags, Browns and Saints? Gus Bradley did some good things later but still, whether we like Gus or not, the off season is the best time to institute real changes at DC and OC.

I do think it is easier to change OC (if it is a vet QB in the same system, not if it is a rookie in the middle of a season, IMO), than DC because defense is reactive while offense is pro-active. But I am still a proponent of waiting out till the season is over to institute changes. With Steichen's loss, their offense took a step backwards and the defense of the Eagles, it wasn't nearly as bad and incohesive till Patricia showed up.

That's the head scratcher everyone is talking about today. You would think they would have given their all in the playoffs, but they looked lifeless and anxious to go home yesterday. How does an entire team just deflate??

I had said I wonder what they look like without Steichen bc they struggled offensively with Sirriani before Steichen

Huh?

Sirrianni has been there three years.  Steichen was his OC the first two years.  This year was the first year that Sirianni has not been with Steichen.

While it was surprising, it wasn't hard to see. It happens with teams that went to SB the year prior, and at 10-1 they had been winning all the time for 2 years, but when something goes wrong and the coaches aren't right persons to fix (due to the exodus of both coordinators), team starts to doubt themselves and the flaws begin to show up. When the players and coaches can't fix right away, the team morale drops low enough to cause falling flat, especially after the players have given their all the previous season only to end up losing in SB. That disappointment cannot be stated enough, team and even great players need an off-season to pick themselves up (as in the emotions shown by Kelce after the loss).

Apart from that and losing Steichen, the offense had been mainly scoring a lot this year on the back of Hurts' rushing scores and their elite receivers. Whenever Eagles went to opponent's 1-yard line, they hush-pushed Hurts to a score easily but when the opponents stopped them little ahead, and challenged them to score, Eagles routinely struggled, probably because of losing Steichen and not having good enough play design or calls to make it work. It had been the pattern all year long.

Their defense took even worse beat down, as their pass coverage struggled to stop most of the passing attacks all year. Young players in defense haven't stepped up to give the veterans some time to breathe, and the overall efficiency of their once ferocious DL has been low, though they were good in run defense. Once they had to stop the opponents beyond the defensive line though, the players struggled to wrap up. Letting go good young player like Marcus Epps also hurt in the tackling department.

Injuries to Goedert in the middle of the season took the steam out of the speed of offense, and more injuries to Brown and few young players on defense towards the end of the season just made both units average, and their opponents saw their effort weaken, and took full advantage. Still, credit has to be given to the opponents to not let Eagles get up to their usual form.

Just my opinion, but i think what went wrong for the eagles was something internal. I don't know what but I don't think it was losing their coordinators(they started 10-1) or personnel or X's & O's. I think there was problems inside and the team lost their will to play and maybe even coach like before.

The team seemed just going through the motions. Just me guessing lol.

Management needs to correctly evaluate what the problem was(if they haven't already) before they can fix it.

Maybe Hurts got along with Shane better than he does Sirianni. Losing Shane was bad for them, even when they were 10-1, their offense sputtered at times. Sometimes losing a coach, even if not a head coach can affect a QB emotionally. I remember when Dallas lost Norv Turner (OC), it crushed Troy Aikman.

Philly did not seem to have the offense needed to compete in a shoot out, IOW, when a team's defense is struggling.  That's usually because the QB is simply a game-manager type and not really a franchise type.  But a popular take by the pundits might be be to deflect to the change in coordinators or blame the same HC that's been there for three years to avoid acknowledging the truth.

Sirriani was calling the plays and then later conceded to Steichen.  That's when the offense improved

Nick Sirianni is staying as the Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles!!

However - BOTH - of his coordinators have been fired.

That means that Jalen Hurts will now have THREE DIFFERENT COORDINATORS in three seasons.

With the coaching carousel spinning like crazy this off-season - the Eagles should be jumping in to the "deep end" of the OC & DC pool - before they all get snapped up.

    • Again, I’m not saying a good D isn’t needed…well, maybe I am….  But what I’m really saying is that with a great Offensive you can win with an average Defense.   And, as to your point, I think all the teams that lost in those games you mentioned all had very good defenses.
    • Personally I think Thomas got pressed into playing before his time. He did a few things we didn't expect initially considering his draft position. I think ideally they wanted to take their time and train him up sorta like EJ Speed then get him out there.  I'm interested to see how he regroups to be honest.
    • How bout this? Draft better and u build a play off caliber team. Ain't rocket science.
    • Look im not gonna say Ballard haven't had his own issues, but the guy has been put in an impossible position particularly every year.   2017 - He has a lame duck for a head coach when we all knew was gonna get fired and was drafting for his scheme so I'll give him a pass.   2018 - Arguably his best draft getting two All-pros and a stalwart at RT. He gets to sign his choice of a head coach and is left at the alter at the 11th hour which in hindsight was a blessing in disguise. Drafted Tyquan Lewis, Hines, and Franklin who all have or had great years here. Andrew Luck was back and playing like an MVP.   2019 - Horrible draft. No excuses. It was his worst draft as a GM, but he did find a gem in Speed. Luck retiring a week before the season starts would put any GM in a tough spot so once again I'll give him a pass.   2020 - His second best draft getting Pittman, Taylor, and Blackmon. Signed Rivers and traded for Buckner and won 11 games. Unfortunately lost to the Bills in the playoffs.   2021 - I honestly can't tell for certain what happened in terms of QB. Ive heard Rivers was supposed to re-sign, but choice to retire. I've heard he was pushed to retirement as the colts wanted to go in a different direction which was apparently Stafford before the Rams came in last second. I heard Reich pushed hard for Wentz saying he can fix him against the wishes of Ballard. If you ask me, I think Stafford was plan A as Stafford himself said him and his wife were so convinced he was going to Indy that they started looking at homes. When that fell through, imo Reich lobbied for Wentz. Whatever it was, Wentz was the guy and the QB carousal was supposedly stopped at least we thought. A god-like season for Taylor was not enough to save Wentz from ultimately being traded and you can chalk that one on whomever Reich or Ballard depending on what story you want to believe. In terms of the draft, Paye and Dayo have been reliable players on the dline, Granson you can make an argument is our best TE, and Fries came into his own last year.   2022 - Just an overall disaster of a season. Went the bandage route again at QB trading for Matt Ryan and you can say the colts did him no favors in terms of oline protection and JT getting hurt, but that was a failed trade for a miserable season. 2022 draft is still under elevation, but Pierce and Woods did show potential as rookies and Raimann looks to be the LT of the future.   2023 - Ballard finally gets to draft a QB to tether him to and Richardson plays a grand total of 12 quarters. It just seems like Ballard can not catch a break when it comes to QBs, but from I've seen from Richardson, I have very high expectations.
    • Hi Colts fans,   Yeah, I know, I know.  I was just as surprised as you were.  No clue why my good friend Jim Irsay would call me up and offer me the head coaching job.  I had to remind him.  Dude, I said, you do know that I've never coached at all at the NFL level.  Not coordinator.  Not even position coach.  Nothing.  It didn't seem to matter.  It was as if all that was required was for me to be good friends with the owner, and -- bazinga! -- I could be a head coach.   It was awkward, you know.  That first coaches meeting.  There was Gus Bradley.  And there was John Fox.  Both of them had been head coaches.  Heck, both of them had coached in a Super Bowl!  Yet here I was, promoted to be their boss, having never coached before.  Ever.   But, you know, Bud Grant did it.  So, why not?  Remember, I have a way of doing things.   Ok, sorry, I couldn't help but giggle.  I have a way of doing... what, exactly?  Things?  Things like coaching?  I have a way of coaching?  And how did I develop that way?  By actually, you know, coaching?   Anyway, I'm glad you have a new head coach.  One who has actually coached before.  And his experience doing that is bearing fruit.  I'm just glad I'm already in the Ring of Honor.  Because after what happened, I doubt that I would ever be accepted in by the fans, regardless of how I was as a player.  Heck, they would have put Andrew Luck in before they would even consider me.   In the meantime, I'm back at ESPN, attempting to "un-burn" bridges.  It can happen.  I heard Bud Grant did that once....   Regards, Jeff Saturday
