Rapid Deceleration Trauma

Mighty Blue

Recommended Posts

I read just a few responses about the “hit” placed on Mr. Pitman by the Steelers player.

Here is something that wasn’t mentioned on the Fan Forum and that is…Rapid Deceleration Trauma.

Well, it could have been mentioned but I was too lazy to read them all.

I would recommend researching this topic if you have not heard about it.

The injuries are the ones we can’t see.

We see him get hit, stays down for a while, gets up, then, slowly walks

off the field for a better evaluation.

The “hit” may have had his brain slam inside the skull on the side of impact,

his cervical spine could have hyperextended causing soft tissue damage, and shoulder could have been jammed towards his chest which could have caused a lung contusion or, worse, a collapsed lung.

Okay…science and technology have made helmets and shoulder pads safer for use… but players are still getting injured/traumatized.

If I were the team’s physician, I would

not allow him to play Sunday’s game with the Atlanta( coulda hadda)

Super Bowl Trophy) Falcons.

Give Mr Pitman the weekend off.:sleepy:

Re-evaluate and hope he heals well

and returns ready to “burn” any defensive back and plans on getting them on ESPN’s

“You Got Mossed!”

My prediction…

Colts Win against the Falcons !

Interesting.  Is there a way to determine if he actually experienced RDT?  Some of the symptoms appear to be easily seen via x-rays, etc.

I honestly would not be upset if the doctors held him out.

It’ll show up on a CT scan. Mine did

I've heard of this trauma.

It goes "hand in hand" with concussion injuries.

I feel that the NFL - and - helmet makers are making huge strides in better protecting players.

However - it will NEVER be perfect - and - we should never anticipate that - in a sport with freight train type hits - it ever will be.

Progress is measured in baby steps!!

Isn’t this the same as a concussion? I always thought a concussion was the brain being damaged from hitting the skull, sounds like the came thing.

RDT is a fancy physics term for just taking a big hit.  Its used a lot when talking about car crashes and head and neck injuries but any part of the body or the entire body can experience rdt
