One thing I left out in my above post was he just had hip surgery as well. I just mentioned his back because he had been taking pain killers for years/daily which were prescribed by his doctor. Anyone of us in here can ride around with a bag of pills In our car as long as they are prescribed by a doctor. Nothing illegal about that at all. Just don't be under the influence of any while driving. He was and got arrested for it. I agree with him getting arrested, he was a danger to others on the road, but people saying he was drinking or taking illegal pills are way off base. That is a true case of defamation.

I agree. He gets an even worse name among people by having false information spread about him. Not only does that attack his character, but it could also hurt his income down the road if Colts fans root for another team, he loses merchandise and ticket sales because of what is said in an interview and by Stephen A. Smith. Maybe future generations don't become Colts fans and it costs his daughters down the road. A big domino effect here, and he could sue them to have an impact on the media. Wouldn't blame him one bit.

Millions of people watch that show and many are influenced by it. Saying stuff like no free agent should want to come to Indy and play for us is really bothersome. Stephen A and some of his hosts need to put a sock in it. They would not like my takes. If I was on there, ratings would go through the roof after i had my takes.chuckling homer simpson GIF

Yep. the bolded is another thing that could cause Irsay money down the line. Not only that, it could make it harder for Ballard and Steichen, and if we lose them down the line, it could affect our next hires. Sadly, some FAs could see this, think Irsay is "racist" and not sign with the Colts. Not saying it will happen, but a lot of the good FAs every year are kids in their mid 20's, and they can be influenced by someone like Stephen A. Smith who they grew up watching as kids.

Absolutely garbage situation. Nothing good comes of speaking to the media in these situations.

I'll say this too. I have Bipolar and Seizure medication. When I go to the casino and some other places overnight at times, I have to bring my prescription pill bottles with me in case I get pulled over by the cops. I would hate to get into an accident, and have my name smeared falsely because of prescriptions I'm taking and have it twisted in a way where I have anger problems and did something intentional, or I have seizures, and I shouldn't be on the road.

So I see where Irsay is coming from here even thinking about it from a hypothetical scenario.

I don’t doubt the police profiled him. They could arrest him and spend a few hours booking and processing him, or go do their beat out on 38th street or worse yet the east side and take the chance of not coming back from the end of that watch. I’m sure they’d hold me up for a simple right on red or a missed stop sign for as long as they could to avoid getting back to the regular, more dangerous % that goes on in that city. It’s just the far south side of Detroit these days.

A respectable track record is not what IMPD stands for.

It was the carmel police department.   I doubt they get much action

Well greed and gluttony are a sin. And for the billionaires there’s never such thing as enough. I dislike the 1% because of their actions, not because of who they are as people.

They feel they don’t apply to the rules of society because of their wealth.

That's a very broad declaration.

Yep. That's the thing. It's the double standard that frustrates me. Irsay made a mistake with the "white billionaire" comment, but so do the players in every sport that use the "rich black athlete" card. The only difference is one side is bashed for it, and the other is applauded. I just wish the two sides would be treated equally for their mistake.

You and @NFLfan make some excellent points. The dynamic you're looking for and referencing is the power dynamic. When a group or member of a group with more power says something, it carries a different effect from a lesser group saying same. Similar to when a more powerful country attacks a people or commits genocide, or goes to war.

Irsay's words have a gravity that the black athlete's words don't. We have these conversations every time an athlete cries for a new contract. There's rich, and there's RICH. One got serious weight, the other is still likely figuring out how to spend that paper.

I'm not sure how deep to dig here but the reason for the perceived double standard is pretty clear.

I could believe his “rich white billionaire” thing if it was in any city other than Carmel. That’s literally the rich white billionaire capital of the Midwest.

Jim is the ONLY billionaire in Carmel.  There are only like 3 in the whole state

I was being a bit hyperbolic, I know there aren’t that many billionaires. My point is that everyone in Carmel is very wealthy, it’s not like he was in some podunk town where the cops are gunning for a big fish.

To me there is only 1 kind of privilege and it has nothing to do with race. It's called "Rich People's privilege". Doesn't matter if someone is purple, if someone is a millionaire, they get privilege from people and the law. What Irsay said was wrong regarding him being profiled but I agree with him being defamed by 1st Take. 2 different things. They got their story wrong and made him look like a worse person. Then the part about 1st Take saying no Free Agent should want to go there is hurtful to his business on top of it. Football is a business, Colts is his livelihood. It made it seem like to me, they were implying that Irsay was a racist because Stephen A did even bring up Donald Sterling. Irsay has more money than all those employees combined at ESPN, they should have never went there because he could get people fired if he wanted too.

Hate driven by religion is one of the worst things in the world

Worst part is I’m not even religious… Look. What he did was illegal. I’m constitutionalist. The law should apply to everyone regardless of status or race. He broke the law, he got pulled over. He shouldn’t have brought something up from years ago.

I don't think anyone disputes him getting pulled over and arrested was wrong. It was right, it is the other nonsense being said about him is the problem.

Oh, I agree 100%. In my post, I was wondering why most here did not believe he was pulling "the race card", as they have accused others of doing. (Btw, that is not a term I use, but I have read it here when someone attributes something to race.)

I'm not sure exactly why I find Mr. Irsay's comments innocuous despite the power he has. I believe it may be because he does not come across to me as having any malicious intent. It may have bothered me more if Jerry Jones or the Rams owner said it.

I don’t even hate Jim. Besides all of this crazy tweeting I still think he’s a decent owner. But I’m not going to agree with his life being more difficult compared someone like my father, who was in and out of rehab but was unable to get help once the insurance said no.

Getting rehab 15 times is a luxury most people don’t have. I just can’t feel sorry for someone who can literally make a lot of problems go away with money.

And 1st Take is definitely trash. I’ve never liked Stephen A for his nonsense agendas.

I didn't think he did either. Good point. Michael Jordan could make the same comment and the media/ESPN would blow it off. They would not have the balls to attack the GOAT.

From the Associated Press:

Quote

“I am prejudiced against because I’m a rich, white billionaire,” he said. “If I’m just the average guy down the block, they’re not pulling me in, of course not.”

He made mistakes and gets deserved criticism for them.

People also make up things that are straight up not true and spread a lot of hate on the internet became of biased hate towards the rich.

Same here. He is extremely ineloquent, very far from PC but that man has a kind heart FWIW and if there ever was a billioinaire who was kind, it's Jim Irsay. I wish he'd say more and swing his power more, he is never frightened by political correctness. On this though, he needs to own it....he was kite high and doing illegal stuff, that's the baseline.

I love Jim Irsay but he never ever learned to read the room. When you got money like him, maybe you don't need to. I'd rather him than any of the other 31 owners, and probably more than any other billionaire walking this country as owner of this franchise.

Exactly but look at how the media is spinning it, and how he's having to defend himself. The media shenanigans.

The media loves to create stories. I have never been someone against the media, but I hate when they blow things out of proportion. What he said is not a big deal. I think he has a big heart and just says what's on his mind.

This is disappointing on the part of the media.
