PFF Scores week 6

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

Stand-out performances week 6:

These are premium grades. I'll post links to where they can be found. If you find these PFF grades as interesting as me I highly recommend you subscribe.

  • Tyquan Lewis - Overall 81.6. Run defense 74.4. Tackling 70.2 - No missed tackles. Passrush 68.6 - 1 Sack. No Hits or Hurries. No penalties. 18 total snaps. (Defense)
  • E.J. Speed - Overall 86.8. Run defense 76.6. Tackling 76.6 - No missed tackles. Passrush 68.8 - 1 Hurry. No Hits or Sacks. Coverage 75.8 - Gave up 1/1 for -1 yard (-1 Y/REC). No penalties. 27 total snaps (13 Rdef, 3 Prsh, 11 Cov) . (Defense)

Our only guys in the Great or Elite Overall categories this week. Fairly low snap guys, so even if their grades were great the impact wasn't really felt, besides Lewis' sack possibly.

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 6

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on week 6.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

  • week 6 - Average. Pretty forgetable game for the offense. Mainly dinged by...

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

  • week 6 - Bad. Worst game for Passing of the season, but 3 INTs will do that.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

  • week 6 - Great. Best grade for overall Pass blocking for the season. Probably down to Minshew's quick short-yardage passing more than anything.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

  • week 6 - Average. No stand-out receivers this week to raise overall receiver performance.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

  • week 6 - Average. The Jags were all about shutting down our run game.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

  • week 6 - Average. As above - the Jags were all about shutting down the run game.

Pretty 'meh' week from the offense. Still, it's worth noting we out gaining them quite a bit and it was mainly Minshew's fubar that cost us the game.

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

  • week 6 - Average. Slow start that set the tone for the rest of the game.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

  • week 6 - Good. Held the Jax to 85 yards on 29 attempts. What bothers me is how our defense always gets pushed around in short-yardage 3rd/4th downs or in the red zone.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

  • week 6 - Bad. Another poor performance in a pretty poor season for Tackling so far. We've only had one Above Average game for Tackling.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

  • week 6 - Below Average. Worst Passrush of the season by a good deal. There's been a pretty clear downward trajectory since week 1 for the Passrush, though.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

  • week 6 - Average. Coverage has been pretty average across the season. I guess that's okay considering how young our guys are, but I'd still ike to see some improvements soon.

Another Average performance. Need to start stronger.

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

  • week 6 - Below Average. Jags had that one late return. They also had it late in the first game against them.

Comments on grades for Players, week 6.

Offense

QB - Comments on overall performance and Passing and Running

  • Minshew - Bad. Bad Passing. Bad Rushing. Bad Hands. His worst game by margines. Big Time Throws 2. Turnover Worthy Plays 7(!!). ADOT of 7.8 - on par with the Baltimore game. Targets were credited with 3 drops. Dropbacks under pressure 16 of 55 (29.1%). Time to throw 2.50 secs - his lowest of the season. No penalties. 78 snaps.

Oline - Comments on overall performance and Run blocking, Pass blocking and penalties.

  • Raimann - Good. The model of consistency. Above Average Run blocking. Good Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Sack, 1 Hit, 3 Hurries and 5 Pressures. No penalties. 78 snaps.
  • Nelson - Average. Bad Run blocking. Great Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Hurry and 1 Pressure. No penalties. 78 snaps.
  • Kelly - Good. Consistently Good+ this season - his best season so far. Above Average Run blocking. Great Pass blocking - Clean performance. No penalties. 78 snaps.
  • Fries -  Average. Bad Run blocking. Above Average Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Sack, 1 Hurry and 2 Pressures. No penalties. 78 snaps.
  • Freeland - Good. All snaps at RT - seems he likes playing RT. Great Run blocking. Average Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Sack, 5 Hurries and 6 Pressures. No penalties. 78 snaps.

WR - Comments on overall performance and Receiver routes, Hands and penalties. Hands comments are based on grades for catchable throws caught and ball security.

  • Downs - Average. Average Receiving and Good Hands. ADOT of 6.0 and YAC/REC of 0.4. No penalties. 61 snaps.
  • McKenzie - Limited snaps.
  • Pierce - Below Average. Below Average Receiving and Above Average Hands. ADOT 13.2 and YAC/REC 2.3. 1 penalty. 58 snaps.
  • Rodgers - Bad. Bad Receiving and Bad Hands - 1 drop. ADOT 19.5 and YAC/REC 0. No penalties. 20 snaps.
  • Pittman - Above Average. Above Average Receiving and Good Hands. ADOT 11.1 and YAC/REC 4.9. No penalties. 78 snaps.

TE - Comments on overall performance and Receiver routes, Hands, Blocking and penalties. Hands comments are based on grades for catchable throws caught and ball security.

  • Granson - Average. Average Receving and Above Average Hands - ADOT 17.3 and YAC/REC 5.0. Bad Run blocking. No Drops. Contested Targets made 0 of 0. No Pass blocking done. No penalties. 45 snaps (36 Pass, 9 Rblk).
  • Ogletree - Bad. Only had one target all game. Bad Receiving - ADOT 17.0 and YAC/REC 0. No Drops. Contested Targets made 0 of 1. Bad Run blocking. Good Pass blocking - Clean performance. No penalties. 28 snaps (18 Pass, 1 Pblk, 9 Rblk).
  • Mallory - Limited snaps (9).

RB - Comments on overall performance and Run grades, Receiving and Hands. Hands comments are based on grades for catchable throws caught and ball security.

  • Moss - Average. Above Average Running and Good Hands. Below Average Receiving and Average Hands - ADOT 0.6 and YAC/REC 6.0. 1 Drop. Contested Targets made 0 of 0. Average Run blocking. Great Pass blocking - Clean performance. No penalties. 39 snaps (26 Pass, 5 Pblk, 7 Run, 1 Rblk).
  • Taylor - Good. Average Running and Good Hands. Great Receiving and Good Hands. ADOT 0.0 and YAC/REC 9.6. No Drops. Contested Targets made 1 of 1. Good (near Great) Pass blocking - Clean performance. No penalties. 33 snaps (22 Pass, 3 Pblk, 8 Run)
  • Sermon - Limited snaps (7).

Minshew just had a rough game. But to be fair, Jacksonville is likely the team that knows him best and knows how to play him best. Minshew was under pressure on 16 dropbacks, but you can add another 10 hurries given up by the Oline - that's 26 of 55 plays with less-than-wanted time to throw (47.3%). Based on that I don't get the Oline grades to be honest. Pittman and Downs did okay - Pittman is rarely flashy, but he quietly produces. TEs had a combined 6 targets - NEED more. Both Moss and Taylor did okay despite getting few carries.

Defense

DI - Comments on overall performance and Run defense, Tackling, Passrush, Coverage and penalties.

  • Buckner - Below Average. Average Run defense. Good Tackling - No missed tackles. Average Passrush - 1 Sack. No Hits or Hurries. 1 penalty. 45 snaps.
  • Stewart - Good. Good Run defense. Above Average Tackling - No missed tackles. Average Passrush - No Sacks. 1 Hit and 1 Hurry. No penalties. 46 snaps.
  • Bryan - Good. Good Run defense. Good Tackling - No missed tackle. Below Average Passrush - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries. No penalties. 16 snaps.
  • Johnson - Good. Good Run defense. Above Average Tackling - No missed tackles. Average Passrush - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries. No penalties. 14 snaps.

ED - Comments on overall performance and Run defense, Tackling, Passrush, Coverage and penalties.

  • Martin - Bad. Below Average Run defense. No Tackles. Below Average Passrush - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries. No penalties. 11 snaps.
  • Paye - Bad. Average Run defense. Bad Tackling - 1 missed tackle. Bad Passrush - No Sacks or Hits. 1 Hurry. No penalties. 40 snaps.
  • Ebukam - Above Average. Average Run defense. Bad Tackling - 1 missed tackle. Below Average Passrush - No 1 Sack, 1 Hit and 1 Hurry. No penalties. 35 snaps.

  • Jones - Average. Above Average Run defense. Good Tackling - No missed tackles. No Passrush snaps. Average Coverage - Gave up 1/2 for 10 yards (10.0 Y/REC). No Pass break ups. 1 penalty. 48 snaps (14 Rdef, 34 Cov).

  • Blackmon - Bad. Above Average Run defense. Bad Tackling - 1 missed tackle. Average Passrush - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries. Bad Coverage - Gave 4/6 targets for 46 yards (11.5 Y/REC). No penalties. 64 snaps (27 Rdef, 2 Prsh, 35 Cov)
  • Thomas - Average. Average Run defense. No Tackles. No Passrush snaps. Average Coverage - No targets. No Pass break ups. No penalties. 64 snaps (27 Rdef, 37 Cov).

DIs had a clean performance, but not flashy. Considering snaps Ebukam was probably our most impactful DE this game despite Lewis grading out better - DEs were our worst defensive unit. Brents dinged hard for his penalty despite having and INT. I'm just not impressed by our Safeties.

Lewis is quietly having an outstanding season. Nice to see Leonard had better performance.

Nice to see Lewis come back from having that injury two years in a row. I would like to see the colts try to keep him. Will pray for him on the Sunday before holloween since that’s when  he got injured for two years. He is a really good player.

Freeland had a solid game too.

Personal note: I don't get the coverage grade here. Franklin 4/4 for 18 yards - Good grade. Leonard 1/1 for 1 yard - Average grade???

They played coverage on more than just the plays where their man was targeted. If each of them played coverage on 30 pass plays, the coverage grade includes all 30 pass plays, not just four plays on which Franklin was targeted, or one play on which Leonard was targeted.

 Of course, I should've thought about that lol.

Few things stand out to me:

1.  Pittman and Leonard’s grades confirmed what I saw from two guys who played well yesterday.  Good news on the Leonard front as maybe he’s starting to round into shape.

2.  Tackling continues to be a problem on this team and something I’ve also noticed.  That is something along with ball protection and stopping stupid penalties that Shane needs to be preaching to his guys to get better at.  All of those things traditionally go on the coach.

3.  The overall grades suggest that things weren’t as bad as we first thought yesterday.  It really comes down to you can’t turn the ball over four times and win in the NFL.

I think Leonard thrived in Eberflus' defense because he had the freedom to make plays. In earlier weeks this season I've noticed Leonard just get moved around by Olinemen - that's not something he had to deal with a lot in Eberflus' scheme. It's encouraging that his grades are better this week, but I'm not sure he's ever going to be the old Leonard again because of how he's utilized now.

I've said of Pittman before that he gets the tough yards. He makes the meat 'n' taters plays not the extravangant 11 course menu plays. A team needs both in my opinion. We kinda of lack a guy that does the latter.

I like Josh Downs and he is a rookie so he has high ceiling and thats just awesome.

I think Leonard thrived in the Flus system for a variety of reasons, but one of the most important reasons is that he was healthy.

Now, he’s not healthy.   I think that’s the biggest reason for the sharp falloff.  I don’t think it’s the system he’s currently in.   I think you’re comparing healthy Shaq with unhealthy Shaq but have decided the problem is the new system and not the poor health.

Notes:(Forgot to quote grades)

• Richardson (damper on the season, just kinda like, whatever.)

• Minshew is a backup for a reason. Enough said

• Taylor improved 2nd game hope that trend continues

• Moss is just solid

• WR core leaves a lot to be desired, yes that includes Pittman. Downs has nice potential.

• TE room continues to look solid

• OL position ranks LT to RT: 10,16,1,27,14

• Freeland getting reps will help his development

• Lewis is putting together a pretty good comeback year

• Ekubam continues to look solid

• Paye and Dayo are struggling right now

• Stewart.....

• LB's are all within 11 grades of each other(54-64), and they're not good grades.

• rookie CB's are developing, Moore isn't playing too bad

• Baker is currently worst CB in the league and has been bottom 10 all season

• Thomas has been in a bottom 10 Safety all season long, has to be better options.

• Blackmon is playing ok at the moment, just ok though.

• Gay is playing elite

• Sanchez, ehhh, close to bottom 10

I'm not saying he's 100% his old self health-wise and he may get better, but his role is different in Bradley's scheme and I don't think he'll reach the same level as before healthy or not. Just basing this on how he's been pushed around by guards and other blockers where he had a lot more freedom before and they didn't reach his level as often.

3 top 10 players on the team - 2 of them on the Oline. Ogletree just haven't been used enough and I'll stick to that until he gets more snaps and fails to produce - if he fails to produce.

Kelly has been the top C in the league for 5 straight weeks despite missing a game - NICE!

Freeland - Good. All snaps at RT - seems he likes playing RT. Great Run blocking. Average Pass blocking - Gave up 1 Sack, 5 Hurries and 6 Pressures. No penalties. 78 snaps.

Keep it up young man.  Not bad for his 3rd? NFL start and going up against the Jags.

EJ Speed has really distinguished himself this season!!

He started strong

#1 LB after week 1

#8 LB after week 2

But he has bottomed out since then

#52 - week 3

#57 - week 4

#69 - week 5

#64 - week 6

Currently graded as a bottom 20 LB, per PFF grades. (64/83)

I know it's just PFF scores, but that is the name of the thread so, only thing to go by here

Not sure why Dayo did so bad this game, when he had a great game recently before.  Need him to be consistent.  Same with Paye.  Thats 2nd round and 1st round picks that really need to step it up this year.

    • I will say this. AR imo threw the ball much MUCH better in his 4 games last year compared to his first 3 this year.  Not even close.   I have to believe a lot of that is due to him being unable to practice much on his mechanics until August or so.  Remember even during spring practice he was complaining of a sore shoulder and had to take some time off.   I fully believe that once he is totally over his injury that he will be able to take the extra reps needed to get back into a way of throwing without having to think so much.   I play a sport at a highly competitive level, won't say which one, but I broke my thumb this spring and I just now am start to get back into the swing of things.  But I am not even close to where I was before I broke it.
    • Do you honestly think the Colts will win a SB, let alone make the playoffs....with Joe Flacco as QB?  I mean are you seriously pining for a 39 year old retread ala Matt Ryan to lead this team????   I am at a loss for that and the only thing that makes any sense is your complete dislike for AR is clouding your judgement.    AR is the future of this team.  He has a high ceiling and with him, and IF he progresses, the team could be a SB contender in a year or 2.  But with or without him there is no way in H E double toothpicks that this team wins a SB this year.  Just not enough ELITE talent on the team.  Honestly the only truly elite player on the entire team as of today is JT.  AR could be.  Not now but could be.   Besides that?  Nobody.  By elite I mean game changing talent.    So you ride with AR, hope he stays healthy and finishes the season, and improves. He makes good decisions for the most part.  The INT in the endzone today was not a good one but for the most part he does.  He just needs to gain experience and technique.    But saying JF should start, when at best....I mean AT BESt ALL HE DOES IS GET YOU into the first round of the playoffs?  Who cares.   I would rather see progression from AR, even it means suffering through a lot of losses, and get a high pick for next year rather than go through a 9-8 season with JF.  Remember the first Manning year he was not good, but he gained tons of experience.  We then got a super high draft pick where we drafted Edge the and we were off to the races after that.   I mean, haven't you had enough of Rivers, Wentz, Ryan and Mishew?  I cannot honestly believe people want to go back to that.   FJ is Matt Ryan PERSONIFIED.
    • One progress I see is that he's finishing games so that's a step. The shoulder surgery and offseason rehab has definitely set him back for a raw guy who needs all the reps he can get. It was reported that AR has a total of 30 something starts at qb INCLUDING hs. Think about that most have that in high school alone. Caleb Williams is the 2nd youngest starting qb in the league and had 33 starts in college alone while winning a Heisman trophy. AR is the youngest starting qb in the league at just 22 but has extreme talent and natural gifts that have to be developed.   I think the staff is doing him a disservice by taking away the threat of his legs (see Lamar) because he is not a pocket passer. I think AR needs a go to TE and the Colts need to rely on the run more with JT until AR catches up from his lost rehab time. Give him some easy short throws to build his confidence before he starts throwing into coverage take the Josh Allen approach.   The biggest problem is that Ballard chose a project in AR instead of moving up to snag the polished CJ Stroud. Most teams move up to get their franchise guy unless they already have the number one pick overall. The reason why it's problem is that the fan base is starting to get restless and the thought of another few years of unfulfilled promise seems discouraging.   Once Ballard chose to sit pat AR was the right choice over the awful Will Levis who was a strong possibility if not for Shane according to Shefty and Will's people. Bottom line is that this will take time. Is the overall team good enough to make a push while AR goes through his growing pains to reach his full potential? I doubt it because Ballard's tenure has been spun in mediocrity at best.
    • Honestly no, but then I didn’t expect to see any progress yet either. He basically lost an entire season and offseason because of injury.    I’ll be more concerned if there’s no progress next season.    What I think is much more of a concern this season is that Steichen’s playcalling seems to have regressed badly. I expected a vastly different offense than what we’re playing and I don’t think Steichen is helping AR at all.
    • To me, this is still his rookie year. When you are rehabbing an injury, you are not getting better at football. He has basically played 7 NFL games with 0 offseason to work on the things we KNEW he needed to work on (hence why he was considered a project QB). I will reserve my judgement for him next year given he has a chance at a healthy offseason.
