Matt Miller's latest mock: Colts pick Edmunds with Nelson still on the board

Take with a pinch of salt, but Matt Miller had inside info on our Ryan Kelly pick about a week before the draft. Maybe his source has been purged from the Colts after Ballard took over. I will be listening to his podcast with justification on the pick and report back if it's based on anything he's hearing or just his hunch.

As he should. The phrase “generational guard” doesn’t mean much. A good guard is a good guard. I’d rather take one in the 2nd. Give me Edmunds or Smith if Chubb is gone.

If we take Edmunds over Smith then we've either done a good job smokescreening or some people have bad sources/info on us.

But agreed with OP, it'll be interesting to see if he's making this pick based on speculation or info.

If Nelson is available at 6 you run to the podium. The only other possible pick at 6 is Smith but he could be had via trade down to 8 or so (not out of top ten) 

Edmunds has a ton of potential but you don't draft a guy early in the first on potential. I will refer you to TJ Green in the second when we could have drafted Whitehair.

The best QB in the draft falling out of the top 5 is highly unlikely

I am not sure that is a 100% valid comparison

 

TJ Green was a 76th ranked prospect (3rd round).... we picked him in round 2 ...... But, our head draft guy, thought he knew prospects... turned out... he didnt

 

MANY NFL draft rankings have Edmunds as a top 6 overall prospect 

 

NFL.COM, has Edmunds as the 4th best ranked OVERALL pick

 

MOST NFL mock drafts have him going in the top 10 (Some to the Colts)

 

Edmunds isnt a suprise to the NFL scouts......  

 

Who knows what the Colts will do?  (I dont)

 

If we get a chance to choose, Chubb that would seem to be a safe pick, but I think he is gone

 

I do think that Edmunds MAY be our pick, and I would be happy with that pick..... we are not "over drafting" the kid

We are picking him, right in the area (within 2-3 picks) where he is "slotted" to go by the "experts" 

 

However......

If the stars line up, and Buffalo offers the 2 picks in the first..... I grab them and take the best players available

 

If the stars line up and Miami offers 2 firsts and a second........  I grab them..... and take the best player(s) available

 

If the stars line up and Arizona offers up 2 firsts, and 2 seconds...... I grab them and take the best players available

 

These trades, IF we draft well, builds a better, long term team.

 

There have been SO many "cant miss" prospects..... that MISS......

 

If I have a shot to add many more picks in the "good rounds" my odds are better of picking multiple winners

 

It will be an interesting few days

The concern about Edmunds is you are speculating about his future. He’s a risk. The tape doesn’t justify the pick, but, oh, the possibilities..... The sure things are Nelson and Barkley. I have a very difficult time seeing Edmunds taken over either of these two.

The reality is...... EVERY pick is speculation, and every pick is a risk....... there is no sure thing, not absolutly

 

I have heard the "cant miss" in every draft...........

 

I have blathered on incessentley about pick value of a guard at 6

(So much I am even boring myself)

True. In the purest sense, you never know until they hit the field and play as to whether you got a good one or not. But stellar play against top notch competition in college is a good barometer. The tape tells you a lot. And both Nelson and Chubb’s body of work speaks volumes. Edmunds not as much. Thus the hope that he can be coached up to reach his terrific potential. But it’s a reach while Chubb and especially Nelson are much closer to sure things.

I understand what you are saying

 

I am a fan of Chubb, and would be very happy with him as well.

 

I am also a fan of Nelson, as we need a guard (I am just looking for it in 2nd round)

 

 

There is some amazing tape on Edmunds

 

Some of the evaluations on him is to be patient......  when he does this, the tape is very good  When he charges in, he misses

 

On the surface, it seems like a litle bit of coaching

 

He seems like an intelligent kid

Seems like it was just speculation. They actually had Bradley Chubb fall to the Colts in their mock and they took him for the Colts.
