"They're Not Reversing Many Calls This Year"

"Who" is not reversing calls this year? We hear this (I heard it again today) and I ask what does that mean? "Our NFL officials right or wrong"? If they called no catch then it is no catch despite film proving otherwise? This is not balls and strikes.  The pass play rules in college and pros needs to be changed to reflect what happened, not what was called.

Refs make a judgement call on the field based on what they see.  In some cases, it is automatically reviewed (eg. touchdowns, turnovers, questionable calls within 2 minutes of the end of a half), or it can be challenged by a coach (by throwing the challenge flag).  To overrule the call on the field, the refs must have indisputable video evidence.  That is, if they call a pass as incomplete, there must be 100% clear, indisputable evidence that the catch was made.  For whatever reason, such as the refs making more correct calls on the field, the refs aren't reversing many of the calls that are reviewed, as claimed by the source you're quoting.

Yep. This. Plus the league said at the beginning of the season, that unless it was beyond doubt and 100 percent wrong, they wanted calls made on the field to stand. In otherwords, unless clear evidence to the contrary, leave the call stand. Granted, the refs have screwed up some big ones this year and even this weekend

Agreed. Dean Blandino and the NFL are really trying to get the Refs on top of the new NFL catch rules, Dean Blandino will overrule a call if-

 

A. It was not called correctly on the field and is sent for review and

B. The video evidence is clear enough to reverse the on field call

 

When Dean is involved, he is consistent in his decisions when the evidence is present.

Yeah, if that was the emphasis, they have been doing a bangup job.  In the handful of games I've watched, it seems like when there's irrefutable evidence to the contrary, they confirm.  And when there's not clear evidence to the contrary, they overturn.  It seems to me that they get it wrong more often than not, which completely frustrates the purpose of the review.
