2015 Shrine game preview

I've been looking for that quick first step accelerating pass rusher and outside of Shane Ray and Vic Beasley I cant find it, Many others are well rounded Linebackers and agile however just not that game changing speed you have to game plan against, Some with a decent first step but not like a Shane Raye, Freeney, Mathis, Jerry Hughes or Beasley....That's game changing acceleration

I confess this is an odd looking list to me.....

Which of these names seems out of place?    Hmmm?

In my post I was talking about pass rushers with a lightening quick first step, elite acceleration when healthy, Guys like Beasley from Clemson, Jerry Hughes from Buffalo, Dwight Freeney from years past with the Colts as well as Robert Mathis as recent as last year with the Colts and Shane Ray in this years draft as well, Elite acceleration type first step

It doesn't fit a need for us, but I'll be watching Taylor Heinicke, QB for my hometown ODU. Only 6'1", but he's a cerebral passer that can make all of the reads. I wouldn't mind spending a late round pick on him for a solid backup, but I also want to see him somewhere he could eventually start..

I keep hearing about this guy, John Crockett, RB from North Dakota State. Late round guy, maybe UDFA.

Running Backs
-The West tailbacks unit looks to be a source of strength for the team. The unit is clearly led (in more ways than one) by the boisterous North Dakota State running back John Crockett. The energy level and exuberance of Crockett bleeds over to his fellow teammates. Understandably, scouts are not in the habit of grading a player high based on his mouth. However, it would behoove them to take note of his seemingly limitless supply of energy during practice sessions. Several times a practice, he sprints 50 yards up the field for no other reason than to have a Rocky and Apollo water splashing bromance moment with a teammate who has just made a play. Others may see a loudmouth but they should really see a player who is never out of breath, regardless matter how many reps he takes or how hard he goes on each rep. Crockett performed solidly in pass protection drills against blitzing linebackers, and was virtually uncoverable during one-on-one coverage drills with linebackers. The linebackers had no idea how to handle his speed, and everything they did ended in abject failure. Between his stamina, demeanor, size, build, strength, speed, explosiveness and pass catching potential, Crockett is one of the most draftable players at the Shrine game in 2015.

Newberry LB Edmond Robinson sounds like a rangy ILB prospect:

Maybe a little light in the shorts, but maybe he could play nickel backer...

Im liking Paul Dawson out of TCU....A bit undersized at 230lbs but that's not really a problem, He shouldn't have any problems putting on 10lbs, Quick, rangy Linebacker. instinctive, watches the QB's eyes

Josh Shaw will be there mostly to answer character concern questions. I don't think he has anything to prove on the field. But if he's got a reasonable explanation for his balcony jumping incident, I'd like the Colts to look at him late. Could be the heir apparent to Toler.

He already talked about that. He had an argument with his girlfriend, she sent the cops, he got scared and ran. I don't know if I'm satisfied, but I find it somewhat believable.

I'm not against drafting the kid....  I just don't want to do it too high....  late round.

By most reports, he's not a bad kid.   He just panicked and make an incredibly stupid decision.

Teams will ask him about it over and over and over again.    He'd best be ready for that....   because it's comin....

Hmm....Not sure how I feel about it. Maybe that one incident was just a mistake, but the fact that he told an outrageous lie to cover it up is what concerns me. That could mean that he's a guy who will do anything to try and save his own skin. I hope that's not the case though because I heard really good things about the guy before the season. He was a great teammate and was a team captain. His talent on the field is undeniable though. I imagine Marcus Peters will go through the same thing at the Combine next month; talented as can be, but will he be a head case?

I've just watched some of his stuff. I like him. Rangy, good finisher, lacks technique in coverage but has the athleticism, nosy, always around the ball... he doesn't like to be blocked, won't stack and shed, but he can make blockers miss, especially when they're on the move. He's a little light for our front, but he could play a nickel role while he gets stronger.

Plays the run well to though needs to get stronger as he can get washed down easily, I watched him after I made that post

I didn't come away too impressed. He's got a fairly quick first step, but plays pretty undisciplined and ends up making most of his tackles after recovering from blowing by the RB. Also seemed like he relies on his speed instead of moves to get by his guy, which often leaves him way off the mark and scrambling to catch the ballcarrier.

I wouldn't say he plays it well. He does hold his own, but he's not making the play unless the play is very near to where he came off the ball at.

Yeah I wouldn't say well....well enough more like it, I might trade down into the 2nd and take him as a rotational pass rusher plus collect another pick in the process and go from there, He has to develop his pass rush moves but he does have that game changing acceleration you want off the ball that QB's have to worry about every down he is on the field

He has amazing acceleration, but due to his tight hips, he's misdirected very easily and is pushed out of plays. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking such a raw pass-rush specialist so high. Maybe with a 3rd or 4th, but not a 2nd.

I haven't watched any of him, just that one play. That looks like great anticipation, made easier by the QB clapping his hands for the ball, but he doesn't look quick, fast or explosive on that play.

After watching the UCF tape, I realized how good Shane Ray is (never watched tape on him), but Golden was consistently washed out of plays and made very little of an impact. I like some of his raw skills, but wonder if he'd be able to succeed standing up or if his quick step is a product always being in a 3/4 pt stance.

That's a good point. I didn't even see the QB call for the ball.
