Why do the Pats have Welker return punts?

Welker's a great player, but I think they use him too much. I saw him motioned, running deep routes, screens, AND returning punts? Is it no surprise then he made some crucial drops? The guy showed signs of exhaustion late game.

Surely the Pats have another speedster they can put in at punt return duties.

It seems much easier to just put Edelman out there to return them

EDIT: Edelman was on IR

I guess it's because the Ravens special teams coverage is terrible and with Edelman injured BB decided that putting Wes out there was worth the risk. I mean they did give up 2 ST Tds last week.

Conditioning for this kind of stuff and playing multiple positions (and at a high level for a lot of guys) goes all the way back to high school, but I can see how Welker can get more easily tired, especially out in the cold. A lot of guys' bodies break down towards the end of the season and in the post season, it's no surprise really.

Edelman usually performs the role of Punt Returner but he was IRed several weeks back.  Next year, Jeff Demps who they signed after he finished up at the Olympic games is going to be their future KR/PR specialist I would imagine, and Edelman should get a new contract in the offseason as well.  Edelman is essentially Welker's replacement.. he won't be able to replace all of his production but he should be able to get about 85 to 90% of it and for a lot less money.
