Colts vs Browns PFF

Two Headed Monster

Many people thought the Colts were crazy when they drafted two tight ends in the early rounds of the 2012 NFL draft, but they reaped the benefit in this game. Second-round pick Coby Fleener (+1.4) and third-round pick Dwayne Allen (+4.0) caught only three total passes for 26 yards, but they were tremendous in run blocking, which led to some big plays. Allen was particularly consistent finishing with a run block grade of +3.6 and paving the way for Colts running backs to gain 64 yards on 12 carries on runs around the left end, where Allen and Fleener spent most of the day. The biggest of those plays came late in the fourth quarter when they both made great seal blocks to free running back Vick Ballard around the left side — and once Ballard made Brown whiff, the win was sealed.

A Puncher’s Chance

Indianapolis safety Tom Zbikowski is an accomplished boxer and he came out punching against the Browns. Zbikowski (+3.4) had a very good game in coverage and made some pivotal tackles as well. He allowed only one reception in three passes thrown his way and, ironically, it was the one reception he allowed that was his biggest play of the day. Facing a 3rd-and-4 late in the game, Weeden connected with tight end Alex Smith in the right flat but before he could reach the first-down yardage, Zbikowski made a strong, solid tackle to keep the Browns short of the line. That tackle led to a punt and was a key stop in the game. He also had a very nice break up on a pass in the fourth quarter to prevent another Browns first down.

Uncomfortable Success

When the Colts hired Chuck Pagano to be their new head coach he brought with him a 3-4 defense that would be an adjustment for his returning players. The biggest adjustment would come from pass rush specialist Dwight Freeney who would now be considered an outside linebacker. Although it has been a rocky start to the transition, Freeney showed glimpses of coming around against the Browns. He had his first positive game grade of 2012, and finished with a +0.7. He tallied four quarterback hurries and one quarterback hit, and showed some of the burst that made him elite. He still appears uncomfortable when asked to drop in coverage, and played in a four-point stance at times too, but the Colts finally saw some flashes from their most feared defender.

I thought Zibby had a good game. Granted, that's the first time I felt that way.

Dwayne Allen is going to be a big time TE in this league when he improves his route running and chemistry with Luck.

I'm sorry to say this for a guy that's been a legend of the horseshoe for 10 years, but Freeney is gone next year. Also, he may not be getting sacks, but Hughes has made the All PFF team two weeks in a row.

what if we moved freeney and mathis to DE, chapman as DT, conner and fokou as OLB, freeman and angerer as ILB. redding can rotate with any one on the line

Mathis was a very small 4-3 end to start with he would get killed as a 3-4 DE. He's fine at OLB which is pretty much the same role as he was playing in 4-3. Freeney there is a little more chance it MIGHT work but odds are he would struggle there more than where he does now in the 3-4. Frankly he's just a guy who doesn't fit our defense anymore. The biggest thing he's giving us right now is that other teams still have to account for him and respect him when he's on the field which is freeing up other guys on the defense.

It would not shock me if we target a true 3-4 OLB in free agency or the draft this off-season to replace Freeney.

Zbi should use that boxing prowess to punch the football out of people's hands like Charles Tillman does for the Bears. I think both tight ends are having the game slow down for them and could be poised for a few breakout games in the second half of the season.

I actually never thought of that for some reason. A right cross to the ball a few times a game could cause a turnover or 2.
