I am no expert on these things, but I believe that with him being a restricted free agent we can attach a draft pick to him this offseason, meaning if another team wants to sign him they would have to match what we offer him, plus give us that designated draft pick. We should be able to get Freeman relatively cheap for next year; probably around $2M. After that he'll get something of a D'Qwell kind of contract.

I would think 4 years 16-21 million he certainly has the talent to be paid but I'm not sure he is a pro bowl caliber linebacker but he is right there on the fringe and when he plays our defense is noticeably better I hope he gets a decent contract because he deserves to be rewarded for his talent

What kind of contract does he get and who else do we keep. Come seasons end

I'm no good with numbers. Not my specialty Just pay the man. He's a beast & whenever he's absent our defense feels much less potent & fierce.

It's like the elephant joke. Where's the elephant sit? Where ever it wants. Just give him a surplus of greenback, financial love Jimmy. Thank you. He's definitely earned it.

Freeman is effective.  You are right that we are clearly better when he is on the field.  However, Freeman is not in a great position to get a big long term contract - and as much as the staff may like him, they aren't going to overpay just because they like his story and him personally.

The reality of Freeman's situation is time and place.  He is an RFA entering his age 29 season - he'll get about $2M for that on a tender.  That will put him at age 30 as a UFA.  The odds are in the team's favor to let him play out his RFA deal and then deal with it in the 2016 off-season.  We or someone else are likely to offer him a 3 or 4 year deal at that point, but it won't have a lot of guaranteed money, nor will it be effectively more than a 2 year deal in actuality.

It is just the way it works when you get a late start in the league at a high wear and tear position.

It's been mentioned, but Freeman will probably be tendered next season. We've tendered other players, and never extended them, so I anticipate a similar course with Freeman. Unless he's willing to do four years, $16m or something like that.

Sucks for him, but he's not a true free agent until 2016, and we'll have to handle the 2012 draft class at that time. He could be a casualty, for the reasons ztboiler mentions: his age and the position he plays. We have two drafts between now and then to find a potential replacement.

Best case scenario is we win a Super Bowl between now and then, and he gets a Super Bowl tax in free agency from another team.
