So Who We Going To Ride For As Backup For AR Next Season

I just don’t want to waste four years waiting for him to develop and then end up drafting another quarterback later.  I hope he can put everyone’s mind at ease this upcoming season but I don’t understand why some already have so much faith he’s going to pan out.

So you think if AR struggles the right thing to do is play our very backup QB?

I’m not saying AR turns out to be elite, but I’ll almost guarantee AR will be a better QB based on his physical abilities alone. He more or less matched Minshew last season and our offense was MUCH more explosive with him in.

I'm probably in the minority but Richardson is mature enough to negate a mentor type veteran QB. You can see it in how he carries himself. Keep Sam and draft a later round QB. For example, Tua's younger brother Talia was denied another year of college eligibility and will probably be a day 2 pick if not 3. If AR works out, develop Talia and trade him later.

I don't think the maturity level that a vet backup QB brings is why they are mostly sought after for young QB's to develop. I'm sure it is a nice bonus if some of that maturity can rub off on a young buck QB who needs to grow up a bit, but I'm fairly certain their biggest asset to the team is the knowledge of the game that they bring and to help the young QB learn the playbook, how to read defenses and ultimately just help them break things down and learn the position.

I think your concern is justified.

I would do what the 49ers did.  Go get the Colts a Brock Purdy.  Draft another QB in the 4th or 5 and sit him behind AR.

Let Minshew go.

Then if AR fails or gets injured, let the new QB come in and win the job.

I would not put ALL of my eggs in the AR basket, just most of them.

Follow the 49ers Trey Lance/Brock Purdy model.

You forget Jimmy G was the vet for those 2 young guys.    A rookie can't help AR develope..   He can't answer questions that AR might have.   I think a vet as the backup is the way the team will go.

i disagree with the bolded because I think the Colts feel they are playoff ready.  If AR misses a few games, I hope the Colts are not willing to lets those games be losses with a rookie QB.

What's funny @PRnum1?  Are you not aware most teams have a vet to back up young qbs?  Pretty standard

Surely you can't be serious.

Are you saying Jimmy G who dated pornstars was giving young rookies advice ?

I don't think so. Jimmy G was all about Jimmy G and no one else.

Lance and Purdy were pretty much on their own.

Lance washed out of the league by being constantly injured, sound familiar?

It was Shanahan and the QB coach that worked with Purdy not Jimmy G.

Jimmy G spent all his time at the bunny ranch, not working with young QBs.

Come on you're better than this

So we know what minshews ceiling is.

We missed the playoffs with minshew by losing a few key games.

Why not take a chance and try to find our Brock Purdy?

And if AR gets injured again what if our 4th/5th round rookie comes in and plays so well he wins the starting job like Purdy ?

The Colts would have found their franchise QB, just in a way no one ever expected.

Let's try to do something different

The odds of that are very slim.

I hope you are right. Usually I’d rather have the better field general over being  just a great athlete. It would be nice if AR turns out to be both.

IMHO we need a vet as back up in 2024

if Minshew wants 8-10M I don’t want Minshew

There are multiple QB vets that can come in and play at a 50/50 level

(can win 50% of games they sub in)

We very much need another young QB to develop and play QB3

This year, I would like to take a swing at Milton from Tennessee. He isn’t as fast as AR5, but they have very similar traits.

He can be QB3 this year and QB2 the next

You can run much of the plays that work for AR….. With Milton.   He just needs a good QB coach

I like Sam Ehlinger but I have seen enough….. He isn’t an NFL QB

I'm not so sure that the Trey Lance / Brock Purdy model is one that the 9ers even themselves planned on themselves.... Brock Purdy was the literal last pick in the draft. If they thought so highly of him before they saw him practice and play and get to where he is now, why did they leave him until the last pick in the draft and risk losing him to someone else?

Hindsight is always 20/20 and they can say this was their plan all along, but come on, do you really believe that? That was a case of pure 100% luck for the 9ers.
