I think they over do it on mistakes a little bit and let it over shadow good play.  The Colts got really dinged for pass coverage and tackling which in fairness have been issues this season.  I will say I wouldn’t say no to Ballard finding a linebacker who excels in pass coverage at some point.  Leonard, Franklin, and Speed all struggle with it.

Franklin leads the team in tackles with 12 yet gets a "bad" grade. Speed had 7 tackles and gets "bad" grade.

On the other hand, Martin had 1 tackle and got a "good" grade. Martin was credited with 14 snap counts. It's safe to say he really made no difference. Honestly, I only noticed Martin on the field once,

If we didn't have Franklin yesterday, I believe we don't win that game.

@Solid84 From your weekly reports, are there certain groups of players or individual players that appear to be improving or regressing? Thanks.

I think it's too early to tell honestly. Some are pretty stable in their performance others are more up and down.

Ogletree is the probably the one that stands out the most to me. He's generally improved or stayed close to previous weeks production while getting more and more snaps since week one.

Freeland was better this game than last, but then he had more practice this week and he's only played two games.

Braden Smith and Bernard Raimann are also two candidates for improved play week to week even if it's only slight improvements.

Stewart has actually regressed. His Overall and Run defense scores have fallen each week.

Paye has also regressed a bit each week.

Yeah like I said I think they over do it on mistakes a little bit.  It’s not a perfect system.  I am not pretending it is.  I agree Franklin played well and without him the Colts would have struggled.

Ryan Kelly has graded really well all year.

I appreciate the Focus grades being posted here as well. Especially the O-line.

But I still believe, my own careful watching of each game, is the best method, of who I think

played well and who did not.

Clearly NFL teams do too which is why they watch so much film.  Like I’ve said it’s a tool nothing more.

If Zach Moss only was rated Good, what would he have to do to be Great? Run 400 yards and cook a 5 star dinner?

Yeah the scores seem like garbage. They destroyed the best D line in football, arguably, and they got those scores? Garbage. I have been hard on Nelson as of late, but he seems like he is back to his all pro level, and he crushed it yesterday.  So they go ahead and give them those scores. Blackman highest rated safety?? That's all u need to know about PFF.

Franklin didn't get a Bad grade for Tackles - he got an Above Average grade. Speed's was Bad (like REALLY Bad).

I don't always understand the Overall grade. I guess it's down to how they weigh individual grades (Tackling, Coverage etc.) in the Overall grade. Clearly they felt his Coverage grade should be weighted high (Franklin's was Bad). That's why I generally pay more attention to the individual grades, because I don't always agree with their Overall grade.

Edit:

Also, I'll try to include Total snaps in these write ups going forward. That'll probably give people a better idea of how much impact grades may have on the overall team performance.

Since people seem to be relying more and more on PFF grades to guide their ‘perception’ of a player and tying it back to the ability of their GM, wondering how long  it will be before PFF starts charging GM’s extra to ‘enhance’ their player grades.  It appears to be subjective and created manually overnight by a dude in his mom’s basement, so I can see an extra money stream to fund his next techie gadget!  Maybe /s, maybe not.

I think most of the disparity between PFF and fan-opinions comes from how PFF grades. PFF grades the play not the result of the play while fans are much more focused on the result.

An example would be AR's first TD pass to Pittman. AR threw it, what, 3 downfield air-yards? Pittman did all the work. PFF would grade the decision to throw it to Pittman and those 3-ish air-yards and say "that's what AR did", the rest is all Pittman. The fans would see a 36 yard pass and a TD.

I get it, but I think we’re overusing and/or misusing metrics these days.  A lot more went into that pass and catch/run than Joe Schmo PFF can account for, or even understand.  Fans used to be happy with the result, now they seem to second guess everything based on some strangers way of assessing things.  I’ll step back now, sit on my front porch and continue to swear at youngins’ driving too fast.

Notes:

• Ogletree is grading out as #1 TE in the league

• Blackman made a big jump this week, slowly improving as year rolls on

• Thomas continues to play like bottom 10 safety(Cross needs more reps)

• Jones has shown improvement over last couple weeks since playing time has increased

• All LBers are struggling, Stuard's grade is 30.1, no more defense for him.

• Stewart had been in top 11 all season, drops into the 20's this week

• Ekubam continues to ascend

• Martin seems to play well when he is on the field

• Johnson has bottomed out, maybe time to give more snaps to Adebawore, or Lewis inside?

• OL as a whole rankings:(Thank you, Tony Sparano Jr)

Raimann (#9/72) been grading out around top 10 all year

Nelson (#17/78) steadily been playing good all year, grade probably would be a little higher, if not for a few questionable penalties

Kelly (#1/37) The anchor, has been grade in top 8 all season and #1 for the last 4 weeks

Fries (#22/78) steadily putting together a solid season

Smith (#12/72) outside of week 3 has graded out well all season

• Lowest rank on OL started is #22, with (2) top 10 in positional groups

• Freeland showed improvement from first action. This will only help his development.

• Alie-Cox has been playing great ball, TE room ascending

• Downs is looking really good, graded out as our best WR currently

• Pittman is so up and down, alternates weeks right now

• Pierce still hasn't declined over any week this season.

• Feel like Moss should be graded higher, he can do it all, grade is a little surprising

• Both QBs rated in the bottom 10, seems asinine I know, but hopefully Minshew can keep us a float till Richardson gets back

  • Thanks 2
