I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players. I hope @w87r will post the accumulated grades when PFF posts them?

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite
  • Great
  • Good
  • Above Average
  • Average
  • Below average
  • Bad

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories - I don't know if I'm allowed to post those intervals or if that makes it too obvious? Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

With the grades missing it may feel a bit weird and difficult to make sense of. If it's a waste of time let me know and we'll just stick to the accumulated grades.

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 4

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on week 4 and other weeks going forward.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

  • week 4: Average. Overall offense was better than week 3.

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

  • week 4: Average. Passing was better than week 3.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

  • week 4: Bad. The worst pass blocking has been all year so far. We had key players injured on the Oline and it showed.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

  • week 4: Above Average. Slightly better this week - best their routes have been all season.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

  • week 4: Below Average. Unfortunately not as good this week as previous weeks (still better than week 1). Not terrible though.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

  • week 4: Above Average. 2nd best week for run blocking - no where near week 2 though.

Pretty average week for the offense with the only real outlier being pass blocking. Going into week 5, Colts Oline is currently ranked 4th overall, up from 7th last week - Link

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

  • week 4: Average. Better than last week, but only just.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

  • week4: Below Average. Better than last week, but still not good enough.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

  • week 4: Average. A lot better than last week grade-wise, but watching the game I felt tackling was pretty lackluster.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

  • week 4: Average. Worst it's been thus far. Buck and Grover were limited and it showed.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

  • week 4: Average. High average, but we definitely saw plays where coverage was lacking.

Pretty average week for the defense.

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

  • week 4: Good

Based on PFF grades the Colts are ranked 24th overall going into week 5 - Link

Comments on grades for Players, week 4.

Offense

QB - Comments on overall performance and Passing and Running

  • Richardson - Below Average. His Passing grade is Average and his Running grade is Bad, which I suspect is due to the fumble. What a come back, though, too bad the defense crapped the bed. Some additional info: Average Depth of Target (ADOT) was BY FAR his best at 13.5 and near 2.5 times his week 1 performance.

Oline - Comments on overall performance and Run blocking, Pass blocking and penalties.

  • Raimann - Did not play.
  • Freeland - Bad. Run blocking was Average, but Pass blocking was really Bad. Gave up 1 Hit, 3 Hurries and 4 Pressures. No penalties.
  • Nelson - Good. Driven by his Good, near Great, Run blocking. Pass blocking was Average - just. Gave up 2 Hurries and 2 Pressures. 1 penalty.

  • McKenzie - Bad. Bad Routes and Bad Hands because of the drop. No penalties.
  • Pierce - Average. Average across the board. No penalties.
  • Pittman - Average. Average across the board. 1 penalty.

TE - Comments on overall performance and Receiver routes, Hands, Blocking and penalties. Hands comments are based on grades for catchable throws caught and ball security.

  • Cox - Elite. Elite Routes, Average Hands and Good Pass blocking. Limited snaps though (8). No penalties.

  • Moss - Average. Average Running and Average Hands. Bad Receiving and a drop. Great Pass blocking though. No penalties.
  • Sermon - Bad. Bad Running and Above Average Hands. Bad Receiving. Bad Pass blocking. No penalties.

TEs definitely were our stand-outs on Offense. Oline had a rough day with only Smith had a really good day.

Defense

DI - Comments on overall performance and Run defense, Tackling, Passrush, Coverage and penalties.

  • Buckner - Bad. Average Run defense and Above Average Tackling. Passrush was Below Average. No Sacks, Hits or Hurries. 1 penalty.

Defense had a 'Meh' outting with only a few noteworthy players - Dayo, Ebukam and Moore. Olubi showed promise in limited snaps.

I know it's not the usual more specific grades, but I hope this will give you an idea of how well our guys did.

Thanks @Solid84! Reminds me of @EastStreet’s old posts.

Moore's numbers were skewed  by the interception which was more on Stafford throwing the ball late.  Moore's coverage most of the day was bad.  Dayo needs to be on the field more.  He had one bad play against Jax where he gave up containment but he's a very good player.  He was the Colts best dlineman the last half of last season.  He and Grover were I should say.

For a guy who people love to pick on Smith sure keeps grading well.

For the first three weeks of the season his grades didn’t match his play I feel. Penalties and poor play. For the life of me I don’t understand why he hasn’t been dinged for at least two sacks.

… That said he was clearly our best Olineman week 4.

Sermon honestly hasn’t brought any kind of spell to the backfield. Any down I saw him in was pretty * poor (thank god JT is back). The TE room is really curious , I wonder how they go about determining who gets in on any particular play? Seems like snaps are being spread amongst that group. Has anyone noticed that Shaq has looked pretty bad since his return? I wonder if it’s just the rust of not playing after so long, or if that Injury has caused him to regress a lot . Whatever it is I hope he can shake back and play up to his contract. We seriously need to bring in more CB help and it needs to happen soon. God forbid another CB goes down we are going to have to ask one of our safety’s to play Corner. The depth is super thin at that position right now.

Yeah this is why I think the people calling for Smith to be moved to guard are living in fantasy world because he’s a darn good tackle.  In fact I think the Colts feel he’s a pro-bowl level tackle.  People seem to jump on any mistake he makes and go after him for it and I think it’s because people who want him moved to guard want to be right about it so they point out his faults for why it needs to happen.
