Was hiring Monachino a mistake?

I can recall Manusky being conservative with the defensive play calls when he first got here. He got more aggressive as the guys got comfortable in his scheme and we got better personnel his second year. I think guys are still settlling in to Monachinos defense and Monachino himself is settling in to the position, getting comfortable with his players. I expect we will get more aggressive as we play more games and Ted learns what these guys do best. The personnel is better than what Manusky had his first two years.

I think a guy that's never been a DC before has a bit of a growing period as well.  Just like any new player in a new position.   I've liked some of the things I've seen, but the main things I haven't liked I'm waiting for adjustments on.  I saw adjustments as far as not playing guys like Morrison.  I saw at least one play in the Houston game where they had Ayers at ILB, problem is we called a timeout and switched the personnel so he wasn't out there after that.  I'm hoping they are starting to lean more towards him than Mcnary.   Mcnary definitely has to go I think.  During the offseason when Ted said "I'm a pressure guy" I thought that's what I'd see.  I saw it in the beginning of the Houston game and then I didn't see it much for the rest of the game.  You indeed should bring pressure against Osweiler so I thought that was a mistake.   The rest of the stuff I'm concerned about is assignment related and tackling issues.  If we don't get any improvements in these 3 areas(pressure, tackling, correct run fits) we are doomed I do believe.

I can't for the life of me figure out why our tackling is so bad. There are pee wee teams that tackle better than we do.

As I am sitting here watching the Texans game again, some of it stems from one guy not doing his job and then it allows an offensive lineman to get up on another guy who should have been clean to make the play had the other guy done his job.  For instance there's one long run I saw where it looked like Ridgeway was shaded to the right of the center.  When the ball is snapped he gets kind of pinched inside when he really should have been flowing down the line to the right, possibly maybe even over the guard to suck up the guard and let the linebacker flow to make the tackle.   Since he got pinched a bit inside before he was able to flow back down the line it allowed the linemen to get up on the linebacker which created a hole.

I liked the hire at the time, and I do realize its only been 6 games with injuries along the way. But the defense is dreadful. Honestly, Manuskys defenses played better than this.

I don't think so, reason is he doesn't have any game wreckers on defense beside vonte. The cupboard is very bare at some positions. I watch the games and we be in the right place or call but guys can't tackle or pass rush. Long story short if we had a a pass rusher and a little bit better linebacker play we would be an slightly above average def at least imo

Yes, our players suck.  However, a good DC can coach and implement schemes that allow the players to play to their strengths and help cover their weaknesses.  Have you watched these schemes?  They have the most predictable and vanilla D in the NFL.

Can you explain the current schemes utilized and how it could be utilized more to our advantage. Why are we more vanilla and more predictable? Do you think its because of our weak LB play and lack of pass rush?

    • Im not certain if there will even be any room for Pierce bc the 4th and 5th receivers need to have special teams ability. I think AD will show enough to gain the Colts confidence. You know Dulin will be there. So from there you're competing with Gould and whoever else. You know Gould plays special teams.  Going to be interesting what they have in mind.
    • Latu's addition also tells me that Gus is not doggedly adhering to his historical "Cover-3 Leo" defense.  Latu is not a Leo.  He's not the undersized wide-9 OLB type playing in a 4-3.  He's a bona fide 4-3 DE.  I'm expecting Gus to even further move away from his historical base defense.  (I never believed that he was going to cling to it come h3ll or high water.  That his coverages last year were simplified perforce, due to the inexperience of the guys he had on the field.)  I'm excited to see what we look like defensively with the new guys inserted.
    • It's about who else is Free Agents vs cap space, propensity to pay our own, can we find better 2-way(run-pass) production for less, is it worth a gamble? Fact that we have the top defensive player on our board from the draft under cheap contract, makes it easier to offset funds. Like I said we can almost have 4 DEs with the funds paid to Bosa by himself. The fact that all I hear from the Colts is glowing reviews about him.   In my opinion the Colts brought Latu in to start opposite of Paye, in the long term. Ebukam will be 31 when he's due for a new contract in 2026.     Just because we exercise the option, doesn't mean we can't work on an extension if his trajectory shows continued growth.     Good thing is we will know in a few hours.
    • Of course and with his, these are just 19-20 year old kids... who wants to be accountable for everything they did at that age.  AD will forever remember that Ballard passed on him as if he didn’t care if he got him or the next guy.  Ballard throwing a cussing rant that got some extra playtime was Mandatory. In the end though it all falls on Mitchell to live a good life and work hard.
    • Lenny Moore as well- yet Indy Fans don’t even put him on the list of Best Colts Running Backs. Some of his NFL TD Records were just broken in the past few years, after standing since the 1960s.
