Elway: Peyton was the only replacement for Tebow

Broncos general manager John Elway has endured his fair share of criticism despite bringing the team its third Super Bowl championship in 2015.

But in a retrospective about the first five years of his career published in The Denver Post on Sunday, he discussed one move we seldom give him enough credit for.

"Because (Tim) Tebow had such a fan base behind him — there was probably only one guy that we could have replaced him with that people would understand," Elway said. "And that was Peyton Manning."

Elway joined the Broncos in his current capacity back in 2011 -- the same season that Tebow led the Broncos to an improbable 29-23 victory over the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs. In that game, Tebow threw for 316 yards, two touchdowns and finished with a 125.6 passer rating before the team was waxed by the Super Bowl-bound Patriots the following week.

While it was evident that the Tebow-led offensive system was not sustainable long-term, the miracle moments against Pittsburgh brought Tebowmania to a fevered pitch. Elway brokered the Peyton Manning deal gracefully and he's right -- there was no other quarterback available at that time who would have been a fan-acceptable replacement.

We talk often about making the tough decisions and how it has led some of the best talent evaluators, coaches and general managers to the apex of this profession. And while Elway's decision seemed like a no-brainer at the time, it was not an easy one. The Broncos have a few more banners and a Lombardi trophy to show for it.

The entire piece is well worth reading (another link here). Elway continues to be one of the most fascinating stars in the sport and is always candid and honest about the job.

He was never going to win a SB with Tebow and knew this nor will he with Sanchez. People like to say Peyton didn't play well in last seasons Playoffs but he did a lot of little things to keep the Broncos Defense out of danger like not turning it over which IMO Brock OZ would've, also just Peyton's presence being out there had teams fearing the Broncos. Even Belichick was going for it on 4th downs in the Title Game, etc. because he knew at anytime Peyton was capable of scoring.

Uh duh...it was the only move he could make to appease the fan base and even a bunch of them still think Peyton was a failure. I do think tebow deserved to be on a team. The media deep sixed him. Can't tell me he couldn't be a back up or at worst a third string qb somewhere. I take some time to look at the guys teams have run out when a starter has gone down the past 4 years and tell me Tebow couldn't have done just as well even with his limited throwing skills to help a team win. I mean we've seen some bottom of the barrel signal callers the last few years and while Tebow is certainly not a franchise leading qb he has other qualities that can help teams win...nobody wanted the media frenzy...which is sad because they killed a guys career even if they created an icon.

Kubiak just wants a QB that won't blow it thats why Dirty Sanchez is on the team in reality Tebow would also fill in nicely considering its the Defense that put them in the position to Win a Superbowl & its the Defense there counting on this season ,18 had good moments but not a year that was Normal for him .

Peyton did have a pretty horrible season but the playoff run he did a very good job of managing the game. The Pittsburg game he had so many dropped passes (I think they officially said 8 but could have been more) he easily could have thrown for 300yds and a td or more. He honestly didn't play horribly. The New England game while he didn't do a whole lot in the second half he did throw 2 tds early and get his team the lead. He set a very important tone early in the game and forced the Patriots to play from behind which helped the pass rush. Same thing in the SB in the sense that he drove his team down the field on the first drive and put points on the board. Even though it wasn't pretty and a lot of scoring drives ended in fgs and no where near what a pre-2016 Peyton would expect he kept his team out of bad positions. Kept chipping away putting points on the board and did do a good job keeping the offense positive and staying out of bad plays. We saw qbs that played much better in 2016 than Peyton Manning fall apart in the playoffs...to Peyton's credit he did not..and while he didn't exactly lead his team to victory he played a very important role in their championship run.

Nobody who QB's their team to the title and goes 10-2 as a starter.....had a horrible year.

.....Peyton, not the top-rated defense,  saved the season in the San Diego game

He's said this more than once, and in an unbelievable turn of events, the media even gave him a free pass for saying that Tebow had earned the starting job before the Peyton Manning Bowl II began.

BC......we know that Elway is bigger than Peyton and Tebow in Denver...

.....not surprising the entire city gave him a pass on all his moves//

(..and they worked)
