Has anyone looked at his 2012 stats? Nothing to write home about (22 tackles and 2 sacks) not worth the hype or big money.

 

Why would you grade a 3-4 end based on his stats? Cory Redding has 21 tackles and 2 sacks, but he had an undeniable impact on our defense.

 

I'm not very familiar with RJF myself. I've seen him a handful of times, but he was a reserve and played behind and alongside some really good players. I think, given how many defensive linemen we lost to injury last year (and this has plagued us for about four years now), you can never have too many.

His job isn't to collect stats.  It's to occupy blockers in the run game so the line backers can make plays.  

 

A 3-4 Defensive end is actually similar to a 4-3 Defensive Tackle.  Sure if they can get some sacks and tackles that's great. . . But their real job is to hold their ground against the run.  They do that then the linebackers just step up, fill a gap and bring the runner down.

Thinking a defensive lineman is bad because of his stats is kind of wrong.  Defensive line are there to occupy blockers and free up lanes for LB's to run through, they are the offensive lineman of the defensive and think of the LB's as the running backs   If a defensive lineman has a lot of tackles it is either because he is a beast or he is over pursuing.  It's not there many beasts in the league.

When was he ever a full time starter? I said above that I haven't watched him much, but everything I've seen says he was a reserve. And a bunch of stats sites show him with zero starts last year, and only two starts prior to that.

Jean-Francois was Justin Smith's replacement when he was injured. Seattle ran at him the entire game to the tune of 176 yards. The next week, Woodhead got 5 ypc and a couple of TD's.

This is one player who I seriously dont want us to let him leave the building without signing on the dotted line! I don't think our D will be entirely set with his addition but I reckon we would nearly be there!
