They don't have the backers for it, but that is the defensive system Lovie runs, hence why they are getting scorched on passing plays over the middle consistently, not to mention the modern usage of the tight end has made the soft zone a liability rather than a minor surrender to stop the larger play. Lovie had a lot of issues, which is why Chicago gave him his papers. People just look at the win/loss record he achieved with an overtalented defense and overachieving special teams play and think he's a god among coaches that was given a raw deal. 

 

The truth was, the writing was on the wall for Lovie Smith years ago, because his defensive strategies are no longer valid against modern offenses.
