How valuable is our 5th round pick?

Recommended Posts

Fifth round picks generally make the roster, however, they generally provide depth and play special teams. Occasionally a team drafts a gem who helps them immediately, but largely that is not the case.

If a player such as Jeremiah Attaochu, Demarcus Lawrence, Jimmie Ward, or some other highly touted player falls within roughly ten picks of #59, should we make a move up to secure the selection?

I really hope we do NOT trade any draft choices in 2015 to move up this year, however, I am not against moving up from #59, especially if it means landing a pass rusher.

How valuable?  This time of year, to fans, 5th round picks are like gold! Next fall, in real life on a historical basis?  Not very valuable.....

If you look at the sum total of moves that teams make across a calendar year, you start realize how many different ways there are to acquire players with the equivalent performance ability of a 5th round pick.

This would be a Great time to use next years #2 for a 3rd this year. There could easily be a player we really like for our system as far back as pick 15 or so in the 3rd,

in this so called Deep draft.
A late 5th is a long shot, but someone has to be on the practice squad.

We gave up a 2 and a 5 for Fili Moala to the Dolphins for moving up, that is how valuable it is :).

We gave up a 2 and a 5 for Ben Ijalana to the Redskins for moving up, that is how valuable it is :).

Granted, both of these were under the Polian years but if you feel you have a bonafide starter that will contribute in year 1, you go and get him.

If we get 2 starters and 2 quality backups out of any draft of 7 guys/rounds consistently as an average for your team, that is a good draft when you span that average over 5-10 years, IMO.

5th round picks are always valuable. You just have to know what to look for. By the 5th round most teams have what they're looking for already so they take a project guy or some guy just for depth. But you can find good value in any round. 7th round picks are the only players who really aren't worth anything most of the time.

This draft is deep enough where you can find a future starter or at least a rotational guy in he 5th. We got Ballard in the 5th round If I'm not mistaken.

The Colts 5th round pick this year is worth 25 points.

Our 2nd round pick is worth 310....   each pick above us is worth 10 points more.

So, pick 58 is worth 320 and pick 57 is worth 330 and 56 is worth 340.

So,  we can move up two spots, maybe three if some team is willing.....   but that's ALL that our 5th round pick will get us.    2-3 spots.    If we want to move more than that,  we've got to offer more....

That's pathetic.  I would rather keep the pick and take a chance with a once promising college player who got injured late.  Like Spencer Long OG, Nebraska or Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma.

There may be some S, OL, or pass rush specialist depth too, that I would rather take a chance on than trading the pick to move up 3 spots.

Hindsight is the biggest female dog of them all.  It's great if it works out.  Terrible if it doesn't.
