So what can we take from this?

Well, the Colts clearly miss out on a lot of pressure because we don't blitz all that much. Also, we're not as efficient as the Ravens and the Browns when we do blitz, which is kinda unfortunate considering the opponents shouldn't really be expecting it.

Secondly when you factor in actual QB dropbacks, and thus opportunities to create pressure, the Colts Dline actually isn't bad. In fact, save this 2023 season, it would seem we're better than the Ravens and possibly only slightly behind the Browns.

So, scheme? Burn-Bradley-at-the-stake time? 😄

Thanks for all the info. It seems like quiet a bit of work. I think this does show what we all know as far as needing to blitz more, and how much it helps having that elite rusher. The '21 blitz rate was nice and I think that came down to Leonard and Moore playing so well.

The efficiency surprises me due Kenny Moore. He is a specialist at blitzing from the slot position. EJ Speed seems to know how to get into the backfield fairly easily as well. I do recall a few tackling whiffs on his part once back there.

I do see scheme as the issue here. It might be due to the lack of quality play on the back end, but Bradley has never been much on blitzing from what I know. The Ravens game showed that the plays are in the playbook. They just need to be called at the right time.

I still think we can (and should) find an upgrade over Paye - he's just not bringing enough in the passing game.

I also think our lower efficiency may be down to us just not disguising, well, anything... When we blitz they know we're coming.

How do you reach that conclusion? Using your numbers, the Colts got one pressure against every 2.55 dropbacks. The Ravens were 2.24, the Browns were 2.06. Both teams got pressure more frequently than the Colts.

I may have worded that wrong? I ment excluding the 2023 season - we’re pretty similar to the Browns in ‘20-‘22.

Maybe it's just me but the whole metrics your using can be deceiving and somewhat confusing.  I think PFF simplified the process and recently released their 2024 NFL Free Agency Rankings for IDL.  See if I can drop some of the images for DJ Reader, Grover Stewart, DaQuan Jones, Maurice Hurst.  Edge player Carl Lawson (Jets) was another player who suffered a torn Achillies in 2021.  Lawson still had a pass-rush grade 71.1, True pass set pass-rush grade of 72.3, a 13.6% pass-rush win rate, and 50.9 run-defense grade.  Clearly wouldn't hopefully be used on rushing down but rotate in on obvious passing down.

    • You will held to account for your positivity, sir.
    • Ok, here's my prediction. Both Flacco and Ehlinger will be on the team this year.  And for similar reasons. Flacco is here expressly to lead the team to the playoffs as a seasoned veteran quarterback, in case AR5 gets injured again. Ehlinger is here in case both quarterbacks go down, if they just need somebody to play. Next year? Flacco will probably not be here, simply because of his age. Ehlinger will probably not be here, simply because there's no reason to give him a contract beyond his rookie deal. I predict that next year, we will sign yet another seasoned veteran quarterback.  To do the exact same thing that Flacco is here to do.  Lead the team to the playoffs in case AR5 is hurt. And I also predict we draft another mid-round quarterback.  For the same reason Ehlinger is here.  To be an inexpensive guy to play the position just in case both quarterbacks go down.   Who is my veteran quarterback for next year?  I'm guessing Andy Dalton.  No, he's not my choice for starter.  But if I needed a guy to back up AR5, who's a "been there, done that" kind of guy, to play just in case...  Yeah, I would think so.
    • This is footage from just one game. The big game be had against the Titans.   And this isn't about the catches he made that game. It's the missed opportunities of what could of been. Find time to watch this, worth it, well if you care to see how open he usually is. Not just deep either.     This is just one game, it is like this every game.(Maybe not to this extreme, this is bad)   This clip, shows just how open Pierce usually is and how Minshew held him back, as well as the whole team.   Pittman and Downs were short options, and easier for Minshew to get the ball out to, that's why it didn't effect them(negatively). It actually benefited them.     Not to worried about it, now the team is just even more explosive.   AR JT Pittman Pierce  Downs  Mitchell      On the field at the same time in some formations. I'm here for it. Can you imagine the running lanes JT would have? Hate to be these defenses and have to face this offense, with this OL.     Then able to add a 4-5 deep TE room to it. Another 4.38, 4.43 WR to the mix(Gould, Dulin)
    • Pierce wasn't  the best route runner , but Pierce was good at getting  open deep, but the deep ball wasn't  really minshew game that is why people  say Pierce was held back by minshew arm.
