The Colts Should Target A Utility/KR Man In This Year's Draft

With the draft upcoming and our team in a re-building year, there's a lot of different directions and targets for the 2012 draft.

I think one area we should try to address that we haven't addressed in a while is drafting a utility player than can return kick offs, punts etc. and can be a factor in the offense.

Our special teams have been horrible, and it's time for us to start making that part of the game relevant.

Take a look at Darren Sproles, Randall Cobb, Reggie Bush, and Josh Cribbs. They're great return men, and each function as either WR or RB in their respective offenses. It gives their team an added dimension as well as another threat.

The Colts should try to target that kind of player in the 2012 draft. A guy who can give us another element while also providing us with a threat on special teams.

What do you think? Just making * chat!

I remember, after watching Sproles play against Ohio State in the bowl game, that the Colts should draft that guy. I think he went in the 4th to SD. What a steal.

I know we looked at T.Y.Hilton, he could be a decent returner as well as a #4 or 5 WR.

As Andy said, the returner isn't the problem. But personally I wouldn't ever want a R1-5 pick spent on a specialist like that. Any old undersized UFA with speed (or backup DB/WR/RB) can handle it just fine. And then inevitably suffer a horrific injury, at which point he can be replaced by another undersized UFA with speed. Picks are way too valuable. The guys you mention are actual players who just happen to have been used in that role on special teams. So was Marvin Harrison amongst others, but that's not the reason he's a HOF candidate. I cringe when a promising player is placed in that position.

I agree. Don't waste a pick on a KR/PR specialist. There are literally 100 guys that go undrafted every yr. that can fill that role. We have guys on the roster that can fill the role. The problem is they haven't been properly coached in yrs. on how to block.

With the league basically doing away with the kick return I agree just get someone with sure hands to handle punt returns. Nothing ticks me off more than a muffed punt or fumbled kick off. Get me a veteren that perhaps can get me 10 yards on a punt. I will take my chances.
