I would be ecstatic if this happens come draft day. I think Smith is a game changer for Indy's defense. It also allows them to move on from D'Qwell Jackson who is counting just over 5 million against the cap. Smith, once he is healthy, can play all LB spots, but will flourish as a ILB playing similarly to how New England uses Jamie Collins.

 

Do you guys think it is pretty realistic he falls though? I haven't heard the latest on when he is supposed to be full recovered.

I think its possible, but I don't think it happens. According to recent reports he'll be playing next year. He may miss the first month or so but he will probably be back no latter than week 8.

I don't think there's a chance he falls. Recent reports say he'll play football in 2016. The start of the season is about 7 months away which is a lot of time to recover. He could play in October.

I say trade up to get him....PERIOD. Don't sit back and wait and hope that he falls. We need playmakers on D in the worst way. You have other teams making moves to get the players they want in the draft while the colts sit back twiddling their thumbs waiting for their pick. And when their pick do come most of the good players are already gone so they go with this "BPA" crap. Jaylon Smith is worth trading up for. AND he's from and went to school here in Indy, too. It would be perfect.

If we gauge the draft and come out with the conclusion that he wont be there then I'm fine trading up a few spots to get him. I don't want to see Indy trade into the top 10 picks. Too costly. Most I would want them to give up would be their 1st and a 3rd. There are other good defensive players like Mackensie Alexander, Myles Jack, A'Shawn Robinson, etc. so if Indy really likes any of them they can play it smart and land one of them.

I don't think it is realistic  anymore that he falls. I did at one time but not anymore. However the possibility of him being there got me salivating and now I just want the Colts to do whatever it takes to get him. He's a potential transformational defensive player. There was a rumor that the Saints really like him at 12  regardless of the injury so you might have to jump them if you want him. If the O-line and CB spots are solidified through FA, do it.

I'd rather have Jack.... he can rush but his coverage skills are better which is also something we desperately need at from the LB position. Buuut...there is very little to no chance Jack makes it out of the top 10.

Playing football in 2016 is not the same as being ready in September.

 

It might mean he's not ready until November,  or even December.     And since he just had the surgery less than a month ago,  it's way too early to be optimistic about anything.

 

Remember,  his camp is going to put out a lot of positive upbeat info because they want him drafted as high as possible so he can make as much money as possible.

 

The truth is often a casualty in the months leading up to the draft.......

Well the timetable for Acl rehab is 9-12 months. So there is a chance he could be ready by September. First week? No, but I don't think he'll be on the pup list

You have to be willing to accept that your first round pick won't play in his first year of you pick the guy who won't be medically cleared until after the start of the season. At best, you get a rookie player who hasn't had any reps at his position, new position, on a new team in the NFL trying to fit into a defense. Now he may play but is he going to give you first round quality difference making ability this year and is that something the team is willing to accept with such a high pick? 

 

is the offset of having a guy who "may" be a top star in the league worth foregoing that first season and will the team have enough talent on the team to overcome forfeiting the first round pick to get him this year in order to fully utilize him next year? The team will have to decide whether this is the risk/reward they want to accept.

I don't think that is the case though. The Injury happened about a month ago now. Even if the time table for return is October, that'll have given him 8 months of recovery. We've seen AP and RGIII come back from ACL injuries in good time.

 

Granted every case is different, saying he could play by October isn't really a stretch. I don't think that's just misinformation.

Not to be too picky but I don't believe he's actually from Indianapolis. He played at Bishop lures high school in Fort Wayne Indiana

Remember,  two ligaments and not one for Smith.

 

Also,  every person is different.    Just because one athlete was able to do it,  doesn't mean all athletes can do it.

 

It's not a question of want or desire or effort.     But each body is different,  it reacts different,  it heals different.

 

Smith might be ready to go come Sept 1.     Maybe.     I just wouldn't bet on it now as it's on Feb. 1.

Guys, I think everyone is reacting to what is coming out of the Smith camp, and you know that is best case scenario. His surgery was only one month ago. So that means for the beginning of the year, rehab would be 9 months which would be possible if it was only an ACL, but his injury was not. It was an ACL-MCL tear.

The only good news from his injury is there was no nerve damage, so everything you hear is going to be smoke. Gurley who everyone felt would be back by week 4-5 went at the 10 spot, and he was seen as a Peterson type of talent. Smith is seen as that type of talent, but I think anyone who drafts him has to be under the belief they may have to put him on PUP, and have him for the second half of the season, best case scenario. NFL teams usually treat first rounders as gold, and any information they get will be treated on the conservative side. I still believe there is a very good chance he slides to 18, and if he does not, he is not going to go in the top 10. I would be happy to move up and give a third this year and third next year to get him. I think he is a cornerstone player, but regardless, he is a gamble. He may never be the same player, but I still want to take the chance.
