I always wondered why his #22 was retired by the Colts.  He was 5'4", 173 pounds. For what I have found he was a track star and a very dangerous at numerous positions.

His Stats as a Colt 1953-1955:

533 Rush Yards on 142 carries, 3 TD

46 catches for 899 yards, 7 TD

Made Pro Bowl in 1954

Had a 104-yard KR TD in 1953, second longest at the time.

I guess he was one of the better players the Colts had in the first years of the franchise, and decided to honor their first really good player, plus he was pretty good considering his height.

Here's a clip I found of him back in 1944 when he was in college:

His jersey:

At least it's something to talk about during the off-season.  :)

Claude "Buddy" Young. The Bronze Bullet. Because of his quickness and acceleration.

Signed with the New York Yanks (AAFC), then moved with them to become the Dallas Texans, then moved with them again to become the Baltimore Colts. (Texans and Colts/NFL)

Anyone interested in his background go to Wikipedia. Btw ... First Colt to have number retired! #22

Somehow that run appeared to be around 140 yards .

He was the original bowling ball of butcher knives.

He only played for the Colts for 3 years but he played with the franchise for 10 years and was an important player all of those years

I guess the lesson learned is even a ball of butcher knives needs to run through the proper hole ?

He only played 3 seasons with the Colts?

533 Rush Yards on 142 carries, 3 TD   That is 3.75 ypc and 1 rushing touchdown per season

46 catches for 899 yards, 7 TD   19 ypc, impressive but not over a long period of time

Made Pro Bowl in 1954  just made one pro bowl in three years

It is just me or is it a bit odd to have retired his number with such a limited resume?

his number was retired in 1966 so his death in 1983 had nothing to do with that.

I am not trying to be a hater just curious about this
