I wasn't saying that value couldn't be found at #24, just that it was tough. If I go back and cherry pick I can find great players at every pick in the draft. Generally skill players are taken higher in the draft, thus at other positions better value can be found in the latter part of the round.

Understood, conversely, we could both pick apart top 5 - 10 picks and find many that weren't good value there.

The whole thing is a carp shoot, and more so for some GM's than for others.

Personally, I'm fine with BPA regardless of position 'cept QB and perhaps TE.

To me, there are no superstars, or potential superstars, on the roster at other positions, so go for it.

And, yes, that includes ILB.

I pointed out earlier that last year David DeCastro was predicted to go long before the 24th pick when the Steelers got him.  All I'm saying is it can't be ruled out that quality "plug and play" starters will be still available when the Colts get their pick.

I was referring to another poster's wish to have a Calvin Johnson or AJ Green for Luck to throw to, I wrote that it is tough to find that kind of value at #24. Buccolts posted a list of WR picked around 24 and lower that were good picks. I was trying to point out that in my opinion that a higher rated oline prospect might fall, due to teams reaching for skill players in the top of the round.

The Colts landed Gosder Cherilus and I'm hoping either Chance Warmack, or Jonathon Cooper is still on the board for the first round pick, if not then get D.J. Fluker.  Defensive backs are great but protect the quarterback is the name of the game for now, keep him healthy until he gets enough veteran savvy to let the Colts focus on other positions.

I have to ask and maybe this was alredy answered but I don't feel like reading through 3 pages of post to see.  But why would you take D.J. Fluker who is a Tackel when we have two already..  Switching from Tackle to Guard is not ideal and not advisable.

Big slow footed tackles moving to guard is not uncommon

Because some of the notes I've read have him better suited in the NFL as a Guard instead and if he is still on the board he might be the BPA.

Everybody with me now...

Gimme a B!  Gimme a P!  Gimme an A!

WHAT'S THAT SPELL???

Well, actually, doesn't spell much of anything since it's an acronym, but, what it means is, best player available.  We signed all these guys in free agency to give us the flexibility to take the best player at almost any position in the draft, because the guys we've signed at each position can hold down the fort if nobody we like at that position falls to us in the draft.  Let's not start with the (extremely annoying) "Our biggest need is X, so we need to draft an X in the first round, and our second biggest need is Y, so we need to draft a Y in the third round, and our third biggest need is Z, so we need to draft a Z in the third round, AND IF WE DRAFT A Y IN THE FIRST ROUND AND DON'T DRAFT AN X UNTIL THE FOURTH ROUND WE HAD A HORRIBLE DRAFT!!!"

Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but seriously, don't do that.  The "check the box" method, while clearly a perfectly fine way to classify a business entity for tax purposes, is not the best way to build a team.

This is how I feel as well. We just got (arguably) better at every position with our PA moves.

No superstars, but we got better.

Take the BPA, regardless of position ('cept QB, and perhaps TE).

If there's a stud ILB sitting there at #24 (though it won't be this year, just an example), you take him.

Can say the same for most all positions.

That philosophy should only change as we obtain said studs.

Here's some data that I pulled from Wikis. This show positions where the top 2 interior linemen were drafted in the past 22 years. I sorted on position and looked for G and C positions only. There could have been players listed as tackles that actually played interior line positions after being drafted.

This year may be the exception, but typically there aren't two interior OL taken before pick #24. In summary, only 2 of the past 22 years have two been taken before pick #24 (2011 and 2010).

2012: #24 #27 (DeCastro, Zeitler)

2011: #15 #23 (Pouncy, Watkins)

2010: #17 #18 (Iupati , Pouncy)

2009: #21 #28 (Mack, Wood)

2008: #39 #59 (Rachal, Pollard)

2007: #29 #35 (Grubbs, Sears)

2006: #23 #29 (Joseph , Mangold)

2005: #26 #32 (Spencer , Mankins)

2004: #16 #45 (Andrews, Grove)

2003: #21 #33 (Faine, Steinbach)

2002: #30 #37 (Simmons , Gurode)

2001: #17 #50 (Hutchinson , Raiola)

2000: #37 #51 (Claridge, Coleman)

1999: #17 #55 (Woody , Page)

1998: #26 #53 (Faneca , Hallen)

1997: #10 #63 (Naeole , Middleton)

1996: #23 #60 (Hartings , Cheever)

1995: #14 #33 (Brown, O’Dwyer)

1994: #32 #36 (Mahlum , Mawae)

1993: #14 #57 (Everitt, Gerak)

1992: #61 #74 (Cunningham , Siever)

1991: #29 #44 (King, Flanney)

1990: #23 #39 (Brostek, Sims)

I think if we stay at #24 we are looking to get an OL - but we will be looking to move if it gets us 2 in the 3rd with 1 in th 2nd - with that said - which position (OLor DE/OLB) has more 3rd rnd options? - i dont know - it gets hazy - if Ijalana is making waves - grab the OL & a CB in the 3rd - grab the pass rusher in the 2nd -

I think not having a 2nd is rough - but the main reason why is two-fold - 1) im nervous for Mathis without Freeney - 2) E Walden  - we're taking so much flack its hard not to at least wonder - technically - isnt he Freeney's replacement? we go from the most productive pass rusher since Freeney joined the league - to the worse "rated" 3-4 OLB the last 2 years?

I know if you are like me you would love a CB - but thats because we needed someone to clamp while Freeney & Mathis rushed - we might not have that this year - ill wait for a CB & a RB - i need a OL 1st - then a pass rusher.
