Some of his play caught my eye last year, too... but getting all giddy about a UDFA who only saw action in a couple preseason games, almost entirely against 2nd and 3rd teamers seems very premature.

I agree... it does, however, it says something that the coaching staff and team were willing to give him a contract and stash him away on IR. They too saw something in his ability to play.

I was arguing this a while ago in another thread. I feel like a lot of people have unresonably high expectations for him. He's yet to prove himself against real NFL talent.

I think he would have been on the practice squad last year if it weren't for the injury. It's easy to stash him on IR and has little impact on financials. He deserves a shot in camp, but I'm sure not holding my breath.

He has a chance to make an impact as WR depth and on STs...if he does make the final roster, that is all anyone should expect. I'll eat my crow if he blows up and makes a Hilton-esque impact this year.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I did wan't to put in my two cents that I do not think he will have a TY Hilton like impact simply because I do not think he's as explosive as TY. I do think that he's reliable. I know from watching him in college and briefly in preseason that he's a good route runner with great hands, but doesn't have the big play ability.  I think he could quietly make an impact.

Until you recall all the players who were kept around for years, and never had an impact beyond preseason (and presumably practices). I'm thinking of Roy Hall, Aaron Moorehead, etc..

To clarify, I was using the comparison for yardage/TD/paying time, than explosiveness/big play. He would obviously be more of a Welker/Collie slot player than a TY big play machine. That being said, the key point I was making is related to yardage, TDs, and general impact on the offense--if he is able to be a key cog in the offense, I will be surprised. Again, I'm saying this because he hasn't shown anything against true #1 NFL talent, and to me, a 3 WR set of RW, TY, and Brazil (or Avery if we bring him back) is much more explosive than if Whalen was in the top 3 WR. I'm also not convinced that we won't draft a WR or bring in a FA or resign Avery to compete for the third spot along with Brazil and Palmer. We also have to consider our TEs in this convo. Basically, there is a ton of talent that was on the active roster last year who have a significant advantage over Whalen in regards to making a significant impact this coming season.

Flash777, you don't have to have big plays to make a big impact. If he catches more balls as a slot receiver in place of collie and gets more first downs, is say he would be a huge impact over Hilton who doesn't catch as many but has the speed to be a deep man
