Broncos want to cut, thats cut, not restructure, Elvis Dumervil salary — if not, Denver may cut him ?

The Broncos have asked defensive end Elvis Dumervil to take a pay cut, according to an NFL source.

If Dumervil doesn't agree to a reduction by March 17, when his $12 million salary for the 2013 would become automatically guaranteed, the team might release the defensive end.

Dumervil's sack total tied for 14th in 2012 and he tied for third with six forced fumbles. Still,ProFootballFocus.com, a statistical and ratings company, listed Dumervil as the Broncos' most overvalued player. The statistical group also rated linebacker Von Miller, Dumervil's pass-rushing partner on the other side of the line, as the Broncos' most undervalued player.

The overriding issue with value ratings is salary. It's not that the Broncos no longer believe Dumervil is a good player. They do. It's just that after paying him the superstar money of $28 million the past two seaons, the team doesn't want to write $12 million worth of checks in 2013.\

To be clear, the Broncos are not asking to restructure Dumervil's contract, according to the league source. Restructures are for salary cap purposes and usually mean no change in cash value to the player. The Broncos are seeking a pay cut from Dumervil.

The team also needs money to reach a long-term contract extension with left tackle Ryan Clady, who received a $9.83 million franchise tag last week.

It's not known how much the Broncos want to cut Dumervil's salary. He is not expected to receptive to a significant slash considering the franchise tag on defensive ends this year was $11.175 million — only $825,000 less than what Dumervil is scheduled to make this season.

If the Broncos and Dumervil cannot come to terms, then a pass rusher likely would be added to the team's position of needs this offseason.

Dumervil played better as a 3-4 OLB in Dennis Allen's 3-4, IMO.

They will cut Dumervil and sign Freeney for lesser in the range of $6-7 mil. a year, IMO.

Freeney and Von Miller together would be like Frathis re-visited, IMO.

Didn't Dumervil have like 18 sacks one year

From Article Link

When the Broncos switched to a 3-4 defensive alignment in 2009, Dumervil was shifted to a pass-rushing outside linebacker position where he recorded a league-most 17 sacks.

in 2011 & 2012 when he registered 9.5 and 11 sacks, respectively.

Dumervil's sack total tied for 14th in 2012 and he tied for third with six forced fumble

 =================================================================

And if the Broncos can't work a pay reduction with Dumervil, a league source said the team would be interested in pursuing former Indianapolis Colts pass rusher Dwight Freeney,

Freeney, 33, is no longer considered the pass rusher that Dumervil is at 29. But the thinking would be the Broncos might be better off getting Freeney at, say, $5 million than Dumervil at $12 million, and using the $7 million difference on players that could fill needs elsewhere on the roster.

Dumervil's agent Marty Magid would not comment when reached by phone Wednesday.

same article as in my OP

Denvers 1st, 3rd and Dumervil straight up for Revis.

Understand why u say that but wont happen, too many needs then & Revis will need to sign LT contract or will demand much in a year

1st & 3rd picks = 2 positions, and Broncos have positions of need requiring filling besides CB

Maybe for less but if $ is issues agreement must come first on Long Term Deal with revis and Broncos must be sure can fill other needs

with  Revis.  ,   it really makes no sense to upset the Broncos Salary structure any further than it already is. Thus the reason for wanting to  cut Doom's contract. I cant see revis signing for easy money

They said Denver may take Freeney to replace Dumervil but I really don't think it is a good idea. Not to mention Freeney is older and has slowed down considerably in the department of pass-rushing, he is also a total liability in run games. The number of tackles Dumervil registers in one season equals that of Freeney's 3 yr total.

Don't think Freeney is a better player than Dumervil, although he did get a lot of attention for doing only one thing at Indy. He is at the stage that he can only play 40% of the snaps.

Totally agee, its simply an issue of money and how best to spend and if can fill another need position with money saved in FA besides freeney & then is thaat player plus freeney is of greater value to team than doom alone is way i see this issue , also help sign Clady to longterm & have extra $ for elswhere, even more if drop DJ Williams

I think both Dumerville and Miller are the two most overrated pass rushers in the league.

In the department of "overrated" I see no pass rusher ranking higher than Freeney. He just never tackles when he is not getting the QB and even he is doing only one job he isn't sacking the QB as many times as either of the two you listed.

Freeney is old now. In his prime he was one of the best. If he was no injured in the SB agains the Saints, I believe the Colts win and possibly win big.

I was comparing Miller and Dumerville to the current top pash rushers in the game in their prime like Jason Pierre Paul and Ware. They are undersized guys that can be manhandled in my opinion. And they tend to disappear in big games.

With holes to fill or room to improve in the defensive secondary, the offensive line ((  I will add DL too )) and at running back, spending $12 million on Dumervil for the 2013 season is an extravagance this team believes it cannot afford.

Although a fierce pass rusher, Dumervil is closer to a down-and-distance specialist than an all-around beast.

In the playoff loss to Baltimore, Dumervil made three tackles. In truth, his skill set might be more suited to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme than as a defensive end for Denver coordinator Jack Del Rio.

Listed generously at 5-foot-11, what Dumervil does physically can be so spectacular it defies imagination. But he is 29 years old, and it is fair to wonder if the violence of the NFL could accelerate the aging process of an undersized defensive lineman.

As the Broncos explore a solution for the contractual impasse with offensive tackle Ryan Clady, it's understandable the team wants to trim payroll fat as shopping in the free-agent market begins.

I wouldn't call them "disappear" in the Ravens game. If you watched the 2012 Ravens entire playoff, can you find any team that could have threatened Joe Flacco more than Denver did? He was even more comfortable in the other 3 games agains Colts, Pats, and SF.

Yes JPP and Ware are the best at their positions and Dumervile is absolutely worse than them, but considering Freeney was making $14M in 2012 for only 5 sacks and 1 forced fumble and totaling only 10 solo tackles (including the 5 sacks), you can find how the word "overrated" is defined.

what I am trying to say is Freeney is only older and more 1-dimensional than Dumerville, and who knows how much he will ask for. Also he has proven he is purly a 4-3 DE and has almost no impact in the 3-4 system. I don't see why they should even consider him, except for his Colts connection with Manning and the fact that he might play a little better when Manning can constantly give the team a lead and force the opponents into more passing situations. But I can see they use him as their leverage for negotiating with Dumervile.

I agree, they may Talk Freeney to spur Doom into thinking if he should call their bluff if it is one

as I said before, They are trying to figure out how to spend best their  money for overall good of team and will love to get a cut in salary before free agency starts so can better know who can afford

At this point doom really is overpaid at 12 miilion for coming season but hey u agreed on that contract to Broncos

So...since both are under contract...and not free agents..

would the Broncos Trade Dumerville for Revis?

Would you?

I would take Revis any day especially since Champ Bailey is declining quickly and Manning would no longer take the cap space in about 3 yrs.

as long as its a straight up trade without giving up a #1 draft pick  too as someone had said, Broncos already dont have a # 6

The Broncos communicated their cost-cutting intentions Thursday to Dumervil's agent, Marty Magid.

"They informed us they want to do a restructure," Magid said during a phone interview. "I'm not classifying this as a pay cut. I'm going ahead with this being a restructure. If we can meet on some common ground, there's a potential we can get it done. If we can't, they'll have to make a decision. But we're definitely in good faith going to try to negotiate this out.

"Elvis wants to return as a Bronco if it all possible, and that's what we're trying to do — make the client happy and try to appease the team."

This doesn't mean Dumervil, one of the NFL's top pass rushers since being drafted by the Broncos in 2006, will be back with the team for an eighth season. It just means he's open to negotiation.

Magid said no deadline has been given to him, but two are out thereTuesday, when NFL free agency opens, and March 16, when Dumervil's $12 million salary would become guaranteed.

"Elvis has much gratitude toward the organization," Magid said. "As you and I know, he's a fixture there. It's a situation where we'll work through it and hopefully it will be a fast resolution."

Jets would never do that trade straight up. Broncos would need to add a high pick to sweeten the pot.

& doubt Denver willing to do that as will get another need at DE , though fill CB, but then lose a good draft pick for another need, basically that's 1 less position then filled

also would have to come to terms with revis for a longterm deal & as paying Champ 10.5 million I THINK ??, cant afford Revis too and he wont sign for less than champ probably, right now without a longterm deal hes a 1 year rental

Hmmm it seems the Titans and Broncos want the same players.

Idk if I would prefer Freeney or Osi in Denver.

me too, but hope doom stays d for less, or maybe , know i wrote this somewhere, Doom stays for less $, still get freeney to pair with him, Move Wolfe to DT where he played in college & resign DT Vikerson to team with him  in middle

If Freeney & doom & Von Miller  can generate any pass rush & wolfe push the pocket  up the middle may just work real well  & then more options to do in draft based on need / best available

to bad vikerson wasnt signed longterm but was low balled to 1 year contract last year as was injured year before and Denver threatened restructure or else I think, or maybe contract was up , dont remember but know if not for injury he would of had multi year contract at reasonable level I read last year and wouldn't be a free agent now, He gained weight like Del Rio Wanted and performed better than expecxted

Have a good night

IMPASSE WITH DOOM

If He leaves Broncos are beat writers just waiting to add this headline - Elvis has left the building

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

cost-cutting contract talks with defensive end Elvis Dumervil seem to have encountered a slight problem — talk. There has been no communication between the sides since Dumervil's agent, Marty Magid, sent in his restructuring proposal Friday.

"Elvis has been working out. He's healthy, he feels great," Magid said. "He wants to stay with the Broncos. Right now, we're waiting to hear back from them."

With contract talks seemingly at an impasse, the chances increase that Dumervil will be playing elsewhere in the NFL in 2013. Dumervil would like a resolution by 2 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, when the league's free-agent market opens.

If the Broncos ultimately decide to trade or release Dumervil, they are expected to give some of his playing time to Robert Ayers, a first-round pick in the 2009 draft, while also pursuing another pass-rushing defensive end in free agency.

Among those who figure to be available on the market come Tuesday are the Bucs' Michael Bennett, the Giants' Osi Umenyiora, the Ravens' Paul Kruger, the Browns' Juqua Parker, the Colts' Dwight Freeney, the Chargers' Antwan Barnes, the Bears' Israel Idonije and the Falcons' John Abraham.

Along with their attempt to trim Dumervil's salary, the Broncos are expected to soon part ways with veteran linebacker D.J. Williams and the $6 million salary he is scheduled to make in 2013.

Broncos looking at all 3 too

Freeney, Abraham, Umenyiora) I read

and  apparently at standstill with Doom, he only will restructure for full amount, not take pay cut

Hes hoping to know today but Broncos can wist til sat to make it official and see in meantime what can get in free agency at DT & or DE Etc to know how best to go

if wait Doom will have to j hope oppurtnities wont pass him by if indeed is cut

------------------------\

The Broncos have expressed interest in Pittsburgh running back Rashard Mendenhall, Jacksonville defensive tackle Terrance Knighton and possibly Philadelphia cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, among other free-agent players.

But they were also hoping to prevent Dumervil and their own defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson from entering free agency. With Dumervil, the contract squabble regards a pay cut. With Vickerson, the haggling is over a pay raise.

"But if we can't reach common ground and you know as an organization that you're going to release him, then we'd like for them to release him by (2 p.m. MDT) and not wait another four days. No hard feelings. We disagree on their restructure option."

Given the considerable difference in opinion, the pass-rushing

defensive end is asking the team to release him before the free-agent market opens Tuesday, rather than wait until Saturday.

The Broncos, however, may want to use the next four days to either continue negotiating with Dumervil or find his replacement through free agency before releasing their seven-year defensive end and three-time Pro Bowler.

It would be a mistake for the Broncos to let go of Dumervil, they should at least think of re-structuring.

If they let go of D.J.Williams, Joe Mays and Keith Brooking, they will be trimming some salary fat anyway. Then, once Champ and Peyton's guaranteed portions kick in, they can do some re-structuring there as well.

If timing is the issue, they need to buy some time with a restructuring, IMO. It does not make sense to let go of a 29 year Dumervil for a 33 year old Freeney to me, especially with Dumervil better against the run.
