I've kinda already scrolled through the individual season changes. There will be a lot of change with positional ranks tomorrow when the rest of the games get calculated.

Will wait till then, although my daughter has a bball game tomorrow so will be a busy evening.

I do want to say Ballard deserves a lot of credit for finding Raimann.  He is a franchise left tackle and you just never hear his name which is good if you are a lineman.  I remember on draft night Venturi wanted the Colts to take him where they took Pierce and Ballard got him two rounds later.

Ballard got Raimann one round later.   Pierce went 53,  Woods 73, Raimann 77 and Cross went about pick 96.

But, more to the point,  why shouldn’t Ballard get credit for that?    I guess I’m not following your meaning….

Ballard got Raimann one round later.   Pierce went 53,  Woods 73, Raimann 77 and Cross went about pick 96.

But, more to the point,  why shouldn’t Ballard get credit for that?    I guess I’m not following your meaning….

I said he deserves a lot of credit.

Our scouts typically find the players and as we read pound the table for their finds.

Ballard has the final say of course. Considering the value of the LT position, Ballard shouldn't be given credit for choosing Pierce over Raimann.

Remember, Ballard put his insight, and our $$ on Pryor.

He/we perhaps, lucked out.

These grades don’t reflect what I saw from Freeland and Fries, which is okay I am not a NFL scout.

Unfortunately Freeland is not following the same trajectory as Raiman did last year.  He’s played a lot and is not that great to be honest.  Below average at best.  He has shown in run blocking on occasion but overall Smith is clearly the superior tackle and he should be.  He is very good.  The sooner he returns the better we will be.  Hopefully Freeland improves over time but I wouldn’t be surprised if the veteran tackle we recently signed to the practice squad turns out to be our swing tackle next year.

I don't think its fair to compare the two. Raimann was viewed as a potential 1st round prospect (NFL.com & PFF were very high on him to name a few) that fell due to medical concerns (a number of teams reportedly failed him medically and took him off their boards), age, and a rough Senior Bowl week. Freeland was viewed way more as a developmental prospect. We drafted Raimann way below where he was projected and took Freeland a bit earlier than projected, and I think the difference between the two on the field as rookies shows that.

I think Raimann is also a bit of the exception than the expectation.

My point exactly.  He’s strictly developmental.  Nowhere near close to replacing Smith but there are some poster’s pushing for that to happen.  Move Smith to guard play Freeland.  He’s nowhere near in Smith’s class.  Yet some think he’s the guy.  The sooner Smith returns the better.

Freeland, at minimum, needs S&C. There's likely also a lot of technique work to be done. I don't think he's a one year project like Raimann, but Freeland didn't show the same potential as Raimann coming out of college either. He'll be a good backup until he's ready.

Freeland was drafted to be a swing tackle who could possibly develop into a starter not a franchise LT.  He’s really faced the gauntlet of pass rushers this year.  Give him an offseason to develop more strength too and I think we see a pretty decent backup at worst for three more years.

There's, for whatever reason, a group of fans that always want to put Smith at RG even though he's proven to be a top RT when healthy. I just ignore that noise. Agreed though. Getting Smith back for a playoff push would be huge.

100%! He's got the athleticism, but his lack of strength has always been the biggest concern. He'll need a couple of years in an NFL S&C program to build the needed strength and, like you said, work on the technique, but absolutely a solid backup in the meantime.
