Who is responsible for how many targets receivers get?

 

I have heard many comments over the years like these comments heard last night by the color commentators (a person actually in-the-know)

 

• "The Colts' TEs had x catches against TEN but have been used only twice so far tonight" (Implies the play caller is responsible but not necessarily)
• "Matt Ryan is looking to Alec Pierce a lot and is developing a trust in him. " (Implies that the QB looks for a certain receiver despite the play call).

Your thoughts.

Some of it is play calling, some is Defenses taking away certain players, some of it is chemistry and trust between QB and WR/TE. Some of it is player performance during the game. Hard to say

If there’s pressure down the middle, you end up throwing towards the outside more. That’s what has been happening with Ryan. Even when TEs got their catches, it wasn’t down the middle for most of them, if you noticed.

 

Denver D is filled with pass D oriented LBs unlike Titans which is why it was harder for our TEs to get open against them.

If they put Parris in the slot, no one is going to keep up with him on a short crosser.  
 

At least 5 yards on the catch.  Which is about double what we get on a first down run up the gut.  
 

Any pass longer than that requires an offensive line…

That is the problem. They are all short crossers and if they feel our OL can't win against their DL on run downs, they crowd and rush and short crossers short of the sticks are well defended.

Sometimes it's who the QB is looking at when the pressure comes (perceived or real).

I think we do have to remember when oline can’t block that’s less targets.
