With 8 seconds before the half, the Saints only had time for one more chance for a TD. Chip Kelly knew the Saints were already in FG range, so he told his boys to commit intentional holding penalties on all the receivers to milk clock so Brees had no way of throwing the TD. One defender has a little too much fun with it and even drags his man to the ground. These antics burned four seconds, so the Saints had to settle for the FG.

Colts fans think the Colts have a bad D and they do, but that SF D is much worse.  But at least they can illegally hold the WRs when they are told to.

I love it. Brees was killing me in FF but that was before I knew Latavius Murray would go off on SNF. I wanted the bleeding to stop for SF, and my little unimportant gesture of gratitude for Chip all the way from the MidWest

It's really pretty smart and when you don't want to risk giving up a late TD gotta hand it to him for pulling that out of his hat. 

 

I mean I'd still prefer teams just win based on play but hey it accomplished the job for what they were trying to do. I definitely could see the rules committee taking this up and changing intentional penalties to impede a teams progress at the end of the half and quarter with say under a minute to go.
