Reality's Colt's Mock 1.0 Pre Combine.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! So The off-season is officially here and It's time to start thinking into the future so I'll drop my first mock of the off-season! In this mock I really tried to focus on building up a solid pass rush, that aspect of out defense will help every other group, and our pass rush has been lacking.

Opening Cap: Approx. 19.8 Mil

Cuts:

  • Andre Johnson, WR (2.5 Mil dead, 5 Mil savings)
  • Trent Cole, OLB (1 Mil dead, 6.1 Mil savings)

Trades:

Bjoern Werner to any 4-3 team for a late round pick (6th?)

Re-signings(Cap: Approx. 33.2M)

Jack Doyle (1 Year/1.1 M)

Depth Signing, decent run blocker and can fill in as a fullback in a pinch.

Dwight Lowery (1 Year/ 1.3M)

Lowery was a decent starter this year, bringing him back to me is a toss up, on one hand I do want to hand the starting role over to Clinton Gaethers but on the other I don't think he showed enough for it last season, I'd bring Lowery back and let them duke it out at training camp.

Billy Winn (2 Years/3.3 M - 1.65/Year, 577k G'd)

Depth. Winn played pretty well last year and proved stout against the run.

Coby Fleener (4 Year/24 M- 6/Year, 10 M g'd)

To me, it comes down to pick one between Fleener and Allen. To me it's Fleener, and pretty easily. Fleener has been improving as a blocker every year, he is clearly a better fit with this organization.

Jerrell Freeman (3 Year/18M- 6/Year, 7.5 g'd)

Freeman was one of the best  surprises this year. He came in as a "meh" very inconsistent player, just another guy. He really turned it around this year though. PFF has him rated as the #2 ILB for the season (only under Luke Kuechly) he is 29 though, so I'd be weary of signing him to anything longer than a 3 year deal. I'd also structure the contract so it's very front heavy so if his production drops down closer to the end of his deal we can get out of it.

Adam Vaniterri (1 Year/2M)

Bring em' back!

Matthew Hasselbeck (1 Year/2M)

Many ups an downs as a backup this year, but to his credit if he had a half decent OL infront of him, his life would of been much easier.

Free Agency: (Cap: 13M)

Kelechi Osemele (4 Year/28 M - 7 M/Year, 14M g'd)

Osemele could be a fantastic addition to the Oline, he's a big physical player who is a dominant run blocker, pairing Osemele with Mewhort could do wonders for our OL going forward, they are both tremendous run blockers and above average pass protectors. With that inside tandem many more holes would be opened for Gore than ever before. Osemele ranked 13th of all OG's this year, all while only playing 10 games. If needed, Osemele could also shuffle over to OT if an injury arises and we need someone to fill in.

Nick Perry, OLB (2 Year/2.5M - 1.25 M/Year, 1M g'd)

Perry has struggled and disappointed since being drafted in the first round by the Packers. He has though flashed pass rushing potential and could show his potential if given a change of scenery. Perry is a perfect rotational player to add to the arsenal.

Patrick Robinson, CB (2 Year/5M - 2.5M/Year, 1.13M g'd)

Robinson played very well for San Diego last season, he posted a +5.7 PFF grade, which ranked 28th among CBs. Robinson only had 1 interception, though he did flash potential and looked very good in a banged up SD secondary. Robinson is only about 5'10, but he high points the ball well and at 28, still could have some potential yet to be found.

Terrance Knighton, NT (2 Year/6M - 3M/Year - 2.1M g'd)

Knighton signed a 1 year "prove it" deal with Washington this off-season, he played very mediocre and his impending free agency will be very interesting. I don't think he'll get anything more than 3 million annually, and with his weight concerns, I don't think anybody will be willing to offer him a long term deal. Kinighton is a big body and an above average run stuffer. We would be a very good destination for Knighton as he wont have to play tons as we'd be filtering Parry in often so we could keep them both fresh.

Draft:

1: Leonard Floyd, OLB, Georgia

Floyd is a good combination of speed and physicality as a rusher. He consistently got pressure on the QB at Georgia, though he only tallied 4.5 sacks but he got much more pressure on a consistent basis then that stats reveals. He's also got tremendous bend off the edge, his 40 time should be key at the combine. He is extremely athletic so it shouldn't be too challenging. Floyd should add a bit of bulk to reach his full potential in the NFL. Floyd would be an excellent to the Colts pass rushing rotation.

2: Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama

Kelly is a smart player, with high Football IQ. Kelly stands at a good size for a C at 6'4, 304lbs. The forty time will be key to tell if he has the athleticism that could make him special. Kelly can come in right away and compete with Thorton and Harrison for the starting spot. If we give Kelly some time to develop he could be a special starter for years to come and would solidify the interior of our OL with Osemele and Mewhort.

3: Paul Perkins, RB, UCLA

Perkins is an extremely tough runner. He's got great vision and can make something out of nothing. When he hits a hole he hits it extremely hard. Perkins can cut it out at any moment. Speed may be a concern with Perkins though, he's instinctive but sometimes lacks the speed to finish runs. If he can run a sub 4.48 40 I'd call it a win for Perkins. He can take some time and learn from Frank and eventually start/be part of a committee at the RB for us.

4: Shon Coleman, OT, Auburn

Coleman stands at 6'6 and is very powerful. He uses his length well in combination with his power, especially in the run game. Coleman does have an awkward base though, he struggles with speed rushers around the edge in pass protection and is a work in progress. If he's given a couple of years to work on his pass protection he could slide into the starting lineup at right tackle.

5: Marquez North, WR, Tennessee

North was a highly recruited WR coming out of high school, as a top 10 prospect. He's got tons of talent and is a physical monster, but he's been dealing with knee issues and has missed nearly half his games the past 3 seasons. If North can put it all together he could be a special talent. But this pick is a flyer.

6 (Via. Werner): Justin Simmons, S, Boston College

Simmons had a good week at the East West Shrine game. Simmons looked like a stout tackler who had good instincts and moved well. Simmons could be a special teams contributor for the time being and we could see if he'd progress into a rotational DB.

7: De'Vantae Harris, CB, Texas A&M

Intelligent kid with slot CB potential. Good athleticism but footwork needs lots of work.

5th is way to high for a WR. We're loaded at the position. We have 3 legit WR threats, plus 2 (maybe 1 depending on FA) solid TE(s). Quan Bray is a depth WR who we use for KR, and we could always call Whalen back up or get an UDFA for another depth.

Also only 1 pick in rounds 1-4 going to defense is a head scratcher, but that's just me.

Personally I think that Shon Coleman is going to be a high 3rd rounder at the latest. Marquez North would be a good pick in the 5th. He has all the potential to be a big contributor to our offense, and he showed flashes of dominance at Tennessee. I am also high on Justin Simmons I personally think he is more than a special teams player. He is a willing tackler, but has ball skills in the back end. Getting him in the 6th would be a steal. I could see him being a Bethea type of player coming out of the 6th round.

Love the Perkins and North picks. Two guys with good potential who will get some time to sit and learn from the guys ahead of them. I don't like the fact that you only went with 1 defender in the first five rounds, but who knows how the draft will play out. Besides, those guys you took aren't bad players at all. Ryan Kelly I think will be gone by the time our second pick comes, but there would still be a lot of good centres available. Speaking of, as much as this team needs an injection of defensive talent, I think the team needs to strongly consider taking a Centre with a second pick. Lots of good players in this draft such as Kelly, Martin, Tuerk, and Voltz. Plus it'd be cheaper than getting a guy like Mack, and pairs Luck with a young Centre he can have for years.

I like Evan Boehm late. 5th round guy but he has the toughness and nastiness to start early. Also a tremendous leader.

Boehm is the C I like as well. I think he will be the best value. Like you said middle of day 3 guy but a day one starter on par with the top rated guys. If he played for Bama he would sit at the top of the group. He has everything you look for in a C power at the point of attack, can create running lanes, great leader, experienced 4 year starter, durable, plays through pain. If you want to nit pick he's been called squaty but I like his size listed around 6'3 310lbs.

I can't say I like this draft much. I am back and forth on Floyd, shouldn't be back and forth on a guy at 18.

How do you walk away from this class without at least one defensive lineman? There are a couple of NT that could really help. We struggled to stop the run and pressure the QB. The D is constantly playing on our side of the line of scrimmage.

I would not take a RB day 2 or a WR at all especially one with that injury history and who provides no return help. Next year we get our RB. Gore for one more year get some cheap help that might stick around Bilan Powell would do

I don't like the idea of a rookie C but we can't go with Holmes again I'd try to remove him from the roster entirely. He's soft and unreliable. I would make a strong run at Davis and Wiz. Both are young 25/26 neither should break the bank. If not  Boehm is the best value IMO. I think we sign a vet to bridge whatever rookie we draft. A C in round 2 when we could potentially add a Billings. Grigs hasn't been shy about his thoughts on rookie C's starting.

FA Pot Roast I hope wouldn't make the 53 man. An old NT who's legs are shot and is over weight no thanks. Billings or Johnson in the draft. We are trying to get younger not older.

I am not sure what arsenal we are adding Perry too. I'm not a fan but if he comes that cheap he's worth a look.

I'm ok with Robinson but I think you have to draft a CB before the 7th. There are some good ones. I like Russell especially if he slips to day 3. Sims S. Utah and Hall N Iowa are small school corners with big game. Both are 6ft + can play outside could be had day 3. This is a pretty good draft to grab a CB.

Love Osemele.

i think my biggest problem is I am hoping we focus on D in this draft. We could add some young playmakers. The DL is loaded. I really hope we get Billings. He could be special a real diffeence maker at NT. is rare. We need to get stronger in the middle.Younger on the back end.

I'd take Austin Johnson over Billings simply because of position flexibility.  There's not one spot on the DL that you can't play Johnson at and he'd be very effective at any of them. Plus he can stay on the field during passing downs.  I think that's a nasty front line rotation with Henry Anderson, Austin Johnson, Kendall Langford, David Parry, Arthur Jones(Or whomever you want to replace him with if you don't like him). Very versatile too!  I'm trying to imagine if we added Damon Harrison to the mix.

Henry Anderson, Damon Harrison, Kendall Langford

Austin Johnson, David Parry, Billy WInn or T. Y. Mcgill

Cut Arthur Jones immediately!

Plus bringing in new pass rushers in the draft.  I'd love that!

I haven't seen much of him. Is he a 5th round talent because of his play or some other reason (injuries or off field stuff?) Reason I ask is I don't know how I feel about having a 5th round guy being our starter with just Harrison/Holmes as a backup

It's just based on his position. Centers typically go lower. A center that goes in the 2nd round has to be really good like Weston Richburg in 2014. Rounds 3-7 is where most centers go. Some good ones even go undrafted like Saturday.

I want Patrick Robinson nowhere near the Colts. Most of us know Greg Toler is bad but we would just be getting rid of bad and replacing him with bad. I also think we can get a better player then Kelly in round 2

There is too much talent on the defensive side of the ball in this draft to take Kelly in the 2nd. We really should take care of that position in FA. Davis or Wiz would be a huge upgrade for our line. I would go hard to make that happen.

if we take one in the draft Boehm day 3 is our guy.

Robinson has become the board fav free agent CB. I'd still like to see Trumaine Johnson
