Anybody Else Think Our D Might Be A Little "too" Specialist Based?

No not at all, but teams can call timeouts, foul, break up a pass, to allow more time for substitutions or they could force an important 3rd down or a 4th down if they were lucky enough. No huddle isn't like some new thing anymore for defenses. It's not easy to defend against especially if it's an experienced offense, but teams can find ways to slow it down enough to make substitutions. While I've not been a around on this Earth as long as some others, I did become a Colts fan during the Harbaugh tenure. And then I became obsessed during the Peyton era, but now I'm starting to get the feeling all over again with this new era. It's an exciting time to be a Colts fan. But no if our defense really does have "specialists" I'm not too concerned, I think we've got decent diversity as it, but if we don't I think we can hopefully find a way to slow it down. Perhaps we'll see Peyton try it when we play the Broncos this year?

You get three timeouts per half, and most coaches want to save those as much as possible, especially in the second half. 

 

The point is that if a veteran quarterback feels like he has a personnel advantage and keeps the tempo up, he's got a better chance of having success against your defense. Manning does this still, and it doesn't always result in a penalty, but sometimes it keeps a defensive package on the field in a situation where the other team would rather have a different package out there. Maybe it doesn't lead to a big play all the time, but if you get the other team uncomfortable, you're at an advantage. Not to mention the fatigue factor.

 

It's just another way for a quarterback to take control of the game, which isn't what a defense wants. They want to dictate what the offense is going to do, not the other way around.

Been bored and thinking, we have a lot of guys who are either run/pass "specialist" and are expected to do a lot of subbing and mixing/matching. Am I the only person who is just imagining us against the Peytons/Brady's who will instantly go no huddle when we go run heavy and take full advantage of that?

 

I was actually thinking about the exact same thing last week, not specifically for the Colts but in general. What type of player would you rather have on defense... a specialist, or a jack of all trades/master of none.

 

At the minute for me, there are only a couple of offenses that have QB's that truly control games and maximize mismatches in a no huddle type system. Manning, Brady, Brees and Rodgers build their success on picking on a run-stopping LB who is in coverage against an agile slot guy or a 5'10 nickel corner/safety covering a 6'6 TE. To do this, they must ensure they keep favorable defensive personnel on the field, and the solution to that is of course no huddle/hurry-up offense.

 

With that said, we do not have any team like that in our division, and there simply is not enough teams in the league to build a defense full of guys who can do it all. And the NFL is not built in a way that allows any team to have a defense full of players who can do everything at an elite level.

 

So I am happy with how our defense is going, I wouldn't say we are a purely specialist based team, I think we've developed the right balance and if players perform how expected I don't see us needing huge amount of rotation based on offenses giving different looks.

 

Of course, if a team has an elite pass rush and elite run-stopping then a lot of these specialists vs. jacks arguments become negated to a degree (although not entirely).

I think our defense is too strongly focused on stopping the run.  It's great against teams that rely on the run a lot and I think it will do a great job against the AFC south offenses.

 

But we don't have a lot of pass rushers and I think above average quarterbacks and elite quarterbacks will torch us.

Agreed 100 percent. This season has me itching more than any other season within memory.
