Chiefs part ways with GM John Dorsey

Wasn't Ballard supposed to be like Dorsey's predecessor in Kansas City?

If so, I wonder why they let him take the Indy job, if Dorsey's time was coming to an end?

Granted, that was like 6 months ago, but even so, that's not a real long time. I wonder what changed.

I don't think they could have blocked Ballard? Maybe they hadn't decided to fire him at that time.

My first impression is that Andy Reid made a power play, and the owner chose him over Dorsey. I hope Ballard brings Dorsey to Indy in an advisory role, while he figures out his next stop. GMs usually don't get second chances, but everyone knows that Dorsey was a good GM. It's hard to see him not getting another shot.

You're right, the couldn't have, but KC obviously wouldn't have let Ballard go if they knew they weren't gonna retain Dorsey.

Obviously means that whatever happened the past few months AFTER Chris got hired is what contributed to the firing.

Chiefs did make some 'wacky' moves like the Maclin cut or even the trade up for Mahomes. But I doubt that would have been enough to get him fired from KC.

Andy Reid has always been very involved in personnel, so I doubt the Dorsey move is related to personnel moves. JMO

My Take as well!

Wow, gotta feel for Chiefs fans. Lose the GM and his predecessor in the same offseason

And, wittness such a weird offseason. Giving up a fortune for Mahomes, letting Poe (+Howard) go then sign Bennie Logan for similar cash? Let Charles, Knile Davis go then sign C.J. Spiller? And finally, let Maclin go and not even try to do something with the WR depth. (There was Decker available for example....)

These remind me a bit of what happened in Philly when Chip Kelly took full control. He let McCoy go then signed Murray and Matthews to huge contracts, etc. Weird moves.

Reid is not Kelly, the old man is proven and good. But still.... something doesn't feel right for me there.

I do not think it was personnel moves, just like Superman already hinted at.  Reid and president Mark Donovan got contract extensions.  Dorsey's contract was to expire at the end of 2017, and even at the conclusion of 2016 season, Hunt was anticipating getting a long term extension done with Dorsey.  Now he's gone and it would seem not Reid, not  player moves got him fired, but potentially contract negotiation breakdowns.

They are going to get another GM, so it is not Andy trying to get full reign either. But they only have a few weeks before training camp, so they are under the gun to fill the position.

And while I do not beleive some of ther personnel moves were by Dorsey, some situations appear they could have been.  Such as the Dwayne Bowe contract extension failure, the delayed re-signing of Justin Houston and Eric Berry costing more... Jeremy Maclin under performing his huge deal... plus the Chiefs always being tight on the salary cap (their cap specialist Trip MacCracken was let go a little while back), and while a good drafter, also had help from Ballard and others in doing it.

So there is some speculation that Dorsey feels he may get other opportunities soon, and asked for too much (in $$, years, or both) for Clark Hunt to buy in.  I agree with Supe's it would be great to get him in here in an advisory position (Chris Ballard is still learning the GM position folks, and Dorsey to guide him in those other areas would be supremely beneficial to Ballard's rounding out), while Dorsey awaits his next opportunity, - which is rumored to be in Green Bay, where he owns a home, and maybe taking over for Ted Thompson should he decide to retire soon.

Bring him in Irsay!
