Remember, We Also Have 1St Choice Of Cut Players

That may not seem like a huge deal now, but come June 1st during those cuts it will. And you know during training camp at least a few good players will be let go because of one thing or another. So it's quite possible that we can pick up a few key pieces when all the cuts are announced.

I do not believe that is correct (but recognize I could be wrong).

I don't believe you can claim more than one player at a time. I believe, if you're not at the top of the list, you can put in multiple claims, but in a priority order. This doesn't seem to be a common occurence in the NFL, though, as not very many players are claimed off waivers, mostly due to contract status.

I could be wrong, and I've looked for clarification, but haven't found the specific answer. Below is the old CBA waiver verbiage. I haven't been able to find anything newer.

WAIVER SYSTEM

Section 1
. Release:

(a) Whenever a player who has finished the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers between February 1 and the trading deadline, his contract will be considered terminated and the player will be completely free at any time thereafter to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period. If the waivers occur after that time, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club. However, if such player is claimed and awarded, he shall have the option to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of the League Year in question if he has a no-trade clause in his Player Contract. If such player does not have a no-trade clause and the Player Contract being awarded through waivers covers more than one additional season, the player shall have the right to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent as set forth above at the end of the League Year following the League Year in which he is waived and awarded.

(b) Whenever a player who has finished less than the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club.

Section 2
. Contact:
Coaches or any other persons connected with another NFL Club are prohibited from contacting any player placed on waivers until such time as the player is released by the waiving Club.

Section 3
. Ineligibility:
Any NFL player who is declared ineligible to compete in a preseason, regular season or postseason game because of a breach by any NFL Club by whom he is employed of waiver procedures and regulations, or any other provision of the NFL Constitution and Bylaws, will be paid the salary or other compensation which he would have received if he had not been declared ineligible, which, in any event, will be a minimum of one week’s salary and, when applicable, expense payments.

Section 4
. Notice of Termination:
The Notice of Termination form attached hereto as Appendix G will be used by all Clubs. If possible, the Notice of Termination will be personally delivered to the player prior to his departure from the team. If the Notice of Termination has not been personally delivered to the player prior to his departure from the team, the Notice of Termination will be sent to him by certified mail at his last address on

file with the Club.

Section 5
. NFLPA’s Right to Personnel Information:
The NFL shall inform the NFLPA of player personnel transactions communicated in the Personnel Notice between the NFL and its member Clubs concerning the termination or trading of players including awards on waivers, termination through waivers, confirmation of trades or any change in the status of players (e.g., placed on Reserve Injured, etc.). The NFL will make best efforts to communicate the information referred to in this Article to the NFLPA on the same day, but in no event later than noon on the next day. A player who is terminated shall, upon request at or around the time of termination, be informed by the terminating Club of any claims made upon him by NFL Clubs during that League Year. The same information will be provided to the NFLPA if requested.

Section 6
. Rosters:
The NFLMC shall supply the NFLPA with an opening day and final roster for each Club. Rosters shall consist of the following categories of players: Active; Inactive; Reserve Injured; Reserve Physically Unable to Perform; Exempt Commissioner Permission; Non Football Illness/Injury; Practice Squad.

Section 7.
Procedural Recall Waivers:
A player with four or more Credited Seasons who is subject to procedural recall waivers from the Reserved/Retired or Reserve/Military status, and who opts for Free Agency in lieu of assignment, cannot, during the same season, re-sign or return to the Club that originally requested such waivers.

How bad do we want players that are cut post salary cap trimming? There must be a reason they didn't make the roster in other teams.

Yeah but in these cases the reasons they get cut are not necessarily because they are bad players but because of too much depth at that position. When you compare those players to our roster they might end up being better. You just never know. This is more for depth that starters, but you can still improve your team.

Yes you could improve your team if you have any money to sign anyone. With our cap and Freeney taking up a lot of that cap where will the Colts get the money to sign anyone? :???: Just curious I guess. :hmm: Will the players take an IOU haha

Usually they are getting cut because either they need salary cap space and they are taking up too much space and/or they just have declined in production from their original contract. Could be that they are a good player still, just not a top 3 player like they may be playing under the last contract. I think we have multiple contracts that just got wacked for an example. I doubt we are able to pick up a once before superstar with an inflated contract on the waiver wire. Nobody took Manning on the wire and he was thought to still have incredible value. Maybe they can take a flyer on a guy who was cut because of cap reasons and is aging but still has playing time left and he renegotiates his contract to fix the cap problem.

For example, if Asante Samual was cut because he was going to count 13 million on the cap to his original team but would only count 10 million on the new team (assuming that is all just salary) then no way do I pick him up at 10 mil/yr, thats overpaying. If I could restructure him to be 10 million over 2 yrs with some incentives to add more, then yeah, put in the claim. Not sure of the rules on that kinda stuff.

You don't really see people claimed off waviers that much in the NFL because genearlly if a player is cut it means that either he isn't worth the contract you would have to pick up to claim him off waviers or he can't play anymore. Thik about it no one claimed Peyton Manning off waviers. Generally speaking players clear waviers and you just sign them as a free agent in the NFL.

As a veteran with 4+ credited seasons who was released between Feb 1 and the trade deadline, he wasn't subject to waivers.

"The Indianapolis Colts officially released Manning on Wednesday and he will become a free agent and be eligible to negotiate and sign with teams as soon as he clears waivers Thursday."

Also Randy Moss is the exception to this in terms of the waviers was claimed off them in 2010 and Moss had more than 4+ credited seasons when he was claimed.

CBA trumps all other sources.

The reason Moss went on waivers is because he was cut after the trade deadline of October 19, 2010 (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81b729e9/article/alls-quiet-on-the-trade-front-as-deadline-approaches) on November 4, 2010 (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/sports/NATL-Randy-Moss-Claimed-by-Titans-Vikings-Regret-Trade-106672633.html).

Everyone goes on waivers after the trade deadline until Feb 1st.

I think I have found the answer to my own question regards to Manning and it's this.

http://sports.stacke...ual-waiver-wire

It's just easier to say he had to clear waviers than it is to say that teams had to wait for the NFLPA to be told of his cutting.

With that said the main point that I was making which is that you don't see players claimed off waviers that often still stands so the fact we have first crack at it doesn't mean a whole lot.

    • People who go to games are not forced to buy parking or concessions. I've gone to a game and not bought anything, and still had a good time.   Your point holds up better when talking about the preseason games.
    • We just played a team with a QB who had been in the building for two weeks, and he only had two incompletions the entire game, and we lost. We played a rookie who had been struggling to move the ball, he put up over 300 yards on us (and a couple turnovers). Justin Fields kind of had his way with the defense in the second half, and if not for a couple of fluky turnovers, the Steelers probably do better than 24 points.   We've played one good QB, and so far, we're 14th in points/game, 29th on 3rd down, 26th in the red zone, 20th in scoring percentage, 19th in points/drive, 23rd in completion percentage against (68.9%, up from 65.1% last season), 23rd in net yards/attempt (which accounts for sacks), 26th in passer rating against. I won't even mention the rushing stats, but we know they're not good (trending much better, but still not good). What's saving the defense right now is a decent sack rate, a decent pressure rate, and a pretty high turnover percentage (8th best).   The sack rate is still kind of troubling, it's about the same as last season, but I think the pressures are coming faster on critical downs. We also struggled to get into pass rush situations in the first two games, and have been looking better the last two games, so I feel like this is trending in the right direction, but it's still a small sample size. This production could be sustainable. The turnover rate, probably not. I expect the turnovers to come down when we play better QBs and offenses.   Two months from now, we will have played Stroud again, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, and Jared Goff. (Darnold is in there also, and he's been very effective with the Vikings so far.) Let's see what it looks like after that.   IMO, the defense has been better the past two weeks, but still giving up a lot of yards, and they struggle to get stops in the second half. It seems like the run defense stuff was a fluke, but we'll see. We're still not good in coverage, and it's only when the pass rush is working that we're able to make good things happen.   So I don't think we're being too hard on the defense. The defense is probably below average, and that's after we've faced three mediocre/inexperienced QBs in a row.
    • Gouging or buying unwanted stuff in order to get the stuff you want is reflective of an un-free market.  Its called captive pricing, reflective of a limited market or a monopoly.   Its not a whole lot different than buying a car that groups option packages.  So in order to get the leather seats, you also have to buy the $350 floor mats.  Except car buyers don't have the captive customers sports teams do.  If they all do it, then there is a  collusionary element to it too, because it inhibits the ability to enjoy a different team.  The choice is to not buy at all, and that's not really a free market.    The free market aspect of it was the guy selling two tickets to pay for that stuff.  He made a decision that unwound the effects of captive pricing on him.  Good for him.,   Don't lecture me on this stuff.
    • Interesting stats on Pennix. Maybe Steichen is looking to add some pass catching ability.
