Yes.... A Nate Davis Thread

I hate to put this on here, but as a BSU alum who was there during Nate's big season in 2008.

I was excited that the colts gave him another chance, as he is a gamer and can make all the throws. He isnt the best on the studying part, but I beleive that is something that can be taught and learned, perhaps he might be able to do that with this team and this qb. I only find his situation intriguing because they have him a two year contract, which I would not understand if he was brought in to be just a camp arm. Is he PS eligible? Any chance he might compete with Painter? ( I doubt that part)

Secondly, does anyone have any notes from him during TC?

From what I've read, his weaknesses come in his studying and going through his progressions on the field. Both of these can be improved with Manning by him. Hm...I would love to see a scenario where the Colts get him to learn the game better, then hype him up like the Eagles did with Kolb and trade him for some picks or players; somewhat similar to what the Pats are likely to do with Mallett.

His problems with learning a playbook come from a learning disability. I am a BSU grad (older than him, but follow the Cards football team closely), and recall he had a tutor to help him with his classwork. As for football, he made up for it with intensive film study and other methods. That may not be enough in the NFL as things are more complex...

He was great at BSU, and if he really works at it could make a good backup for the Colts. Has a cannon for an arm, and is quick in the pocket. I think his 49ers experience really deflated him as he wasn't really given a fair shake (I mean, Alex Smith is no Peyton)

that will be tough w him getting released by a team..but his stock instantly goes up once he signs his name 2 a colts contract..i think they have long term plans for this kid..i constantly heard about polian and crew scouting him @ games..and the poster had it right..this kid is the definition of a gamer!

Indy was the only team to show up at his pro day, so it may be possible that we have some long term interest in him. I certainly don't expect him to be the starter after Peyton is gone, but I would love to see us groom him and get him to an NFL-ready level, then either trade him off or keep him and see what the best situation is for us. He has all the tangibles, he throws the ball well and runs fast and does all that stuff great.

This is correct, I believe he has a big arm we will see & if you can't learn by watching Peyton he won't be able to. Also because of the collective bargaining agreement you are now allowed to carry a 3rd QB which doesn't count against the roster # or the cap. I think a very good idea, & great for the Colts because we traditionally only carry 2 QB's. Someone is going to win that 3RD Qb job. Why not Davis. It will be a fun battle to watch for sure .

    • Just I figured would happen they went defense in the 1st round which was fine.....like I said drafting a wr that early who would be fighting for the #3 spot, you can get that type wr in the later rounds
    • What happened was when the Jets were on the clock at 11 after the Vikings picked, the Bengals, Rams, and Colts all tried to trade up with them before they picked. I'm guessing the same was true with the Broncos, but they didn't want to trade down because 5 QBs were taken already and took Nix (heard Peyton say he had trade down offers but picked at 12). After that, the Raiders took Bowers.   I'm 99.9% sure that Bowers was the Colts first choice and they got their backup choice in Latu who was also their top defensive player. Balard also admitted in his 1st round press conference that he tried to trade up and it was a no go.
    • The flip side is - you won’t see returns on investment in a very high first rounder for at least 2 years and if Cousins keeps playing well for 4 years, this move of the Falcons might end up being talked about as the least use of resources in a Top 10 player.   Plus, if Penix flops, after getting a chance after 2 years, that GM and HC combo will be gone, for a LONNNNGGG time and will never be GM and HC again. LOVE the player, not the pick. Older QBs that have had an injury history don’t go at No.8. They could have gotten back into Round 1, I’m confident Penix would have still been there at the 20s. Rodgers and Love were, for the Packers when they pulled the trigger, IN THE 20s.   Personally, after the first 2 QBs, every QB was over drafted, IMO.   Raheem Morris was hedging his bets on them not picking in Top 10 again, so that was their justification for picking Penix high. If you aren’t picking in Top 10 again, won’t your future 1st be worth less if you moved back into Round 1 in the 20s by the same logic?   Again, LOVE the player but HATE the pick position. They also put Penix in a difficult situation where he might end up asking them to trade him like Jordan Love did after riding the pine for 3 years. Is that what they want?
    • Saw a post from Ian Rapport who stated both the Rams and Colts were making several trade-up calls in the first round. Once Bowers was selected the calls stopped.
