Mock Draft 3.0

Recommended Posts

Some of these selections might be a stretch, but could possibly fall to us in that round.

Round 1: DT Eddie Goldman

I would have liked to have ILB Eric Kendricks here as well, but DT is a much bigger need for the Colts at the moment.  Goldman would be a nice addition and would be a solid anchor for the defensive line.  What I like about him the most is that he does not get pushed around by offensive lineman.  He has good strength coming towards the offense and has good balance.  He's not the greatest pass rusher, but we have other rushers on this team.  He is able to adapt to our scheme well and is proficient in stopping the run, which is priority #1, and my main reason why we need a run-stopping DT in the 1st round.

Round 2: S Ibraheim Campbell

He's aggressive towards the line of scrimmage and is quick to the ball.  He excels in run defense and has good vision.  He does need some more work in the pass coverage department, but that can develop over training camp and the pre-season.  He has good recovery speed and has the instincts to bat the ball away.  Very physical and strong, and had a good bench press amount (23 reps at 225lb), and is very good at forcing fumbles.  He is better suited as a box safety but still displays enough coverage skills to earn valuable playing time.  He is a very intelligent football player and will be able to learn how to fix his flaws.  He is also a very well-liked teammate in the locker room, which is also important for team success.

Round 3: FS Derron Smith

It may seem like a bad idea to get two safeties in the first three rounds, but with Mike Adams getting up in age, it wouldn't be a completely bad idea.  Smith has excellent ball skills and is fantastic in pass coverage.  His tackling needs to be worked on and get under control.  Small for his position but is still a good jumper in jump ball situations.  Very athletic, good vision, and has very good speed.  He also has experience returning kicks and is a good punt returner.  Had to play on an inconsistent defense at Fresno State which caused him to try to do too much and made errors.  He has very good football intelligence and has the ability to be a solid playmaker.

Round 4: ILB Hayes Pullard

Has good instincts and is good in run defense.  He sees the ball very well and is not fooled on play actions and other misdirection plays. Has a nice burst and has decent speed, running a 4.78 40 time.  Does well as a downhill tackler.  He needs to do better with penalties and needs better recovery speed.  Does a good job on special teams, and I think could be the "Andy Studebaker" of the special teams for the Colts.  He'll see time at ILB, but will be very beneficial on special teams’ coverage, and the Colts lost Sergio Brown and Andy Studebaker, so having a solid special teamer would be a good idea.  His size might cause him to drop in the draft, and hopefully the Colts could snatch him in the 4th or 5th round.

Round 5: RB Cameron Artis-Payne

With Gore on the older side, and Herron has the only real backup RB on the roster, Colts need to draft a RB.  Has very good vision and is able to see defenders very well.  Has a nice size for a HB at 5'10" and 212lb.  He has good balance and is a tough runner.  He needs to do a better job of having trust in his instincts.  Has nice around the edge speed and defenders at times will take poor angles at him due to his stocky build.  He is also a reliable receiver, who can come out of the backfield and gain yardage.  What I like about him is that he does not hesitate and finds the running lane quickly, which can cause defenders not be able to react quickly enough to make the tackle.  He could be a decent player in the RB rotation for the Colts.  His athleticism and lack of fast speed could cause him to drop in the draft.

Round 6: WR Stefon Diggs

He has early round talent, but has had two season-ending injuries and was suspended a game for his actions during a pre-game vs Penn State.  I see him falling to Round 6 because Antonio Brown had a 4.48 40 time and had 110 rec for 1198 yards and 9 TDs in his junior season, so players with that kind of production and play-making ability can fall into later rounds.  Diggs had 62 catches for 792 yards and 5 TDs.  Has very good speed (4.46 40 time).  Has great acceleration and can be a deep threat like Hilton.  Can be a good return specialist.  Very dangerous with the ball in his hands and can make a big play.  He's able to adjust easily and is able to go up and get the ball if it’s thrown too high and can come down and get the ball if it's thrown too low.  He has been consistent the past few years and has good awareness.  His play-making ability at slot WR and at returner makes him a very interesting draft prospect, and one the Colts should get with an old Andre Johnson and unproven Duron Carter.

Round 6: CB Cam Thomas

He’s got good height for a CB and a long frame.  He’s physical in the run game and is good at pressing at the line of scrimmage.  Plays like a safety and watches over the rest of the field. He is very good at reading routes and makes a good jump to the ball.  Excels in zone coverage and is able to read the eyes of the QB.  He’s not very fast as a CB but makes up for it will his ball skills and awareness.

Round 7: DE Obum Gwacham

Transitioned from WR about a year ago, so only has about a year of experience.  Has very good speed with a 4.7 40 time.  Better suited as a 3-4 OLB at his weight of 246 pounds.  He’s more of a developmental guy that I think the Colts could work with.  He’s effective in zone blitzes and will have an impact of kickoff coverage.  He’s an interesting prospect and is willing to learn his new position.  I think he can learn the OLB position and provide good depth and play well on special teams.  If not, we could stash him away on our Practice Squad and develop him more.

Round 7: OT Terry Poole

He is able to play both tackle and guard.  Big, strong lineman coming in at 6’5” 307 lb.  He is capable of learning new schemes and new offenses and adapts rather well.  Poole has good footwork and shows his power and speed to get movement in his run blocking.  He does not have the best balance and needs to work on blocking edge rushers with very good speed and block shedding moves.  He’s a guy the Colts could use for depth or on jumbo set formations by the goal line or on short yardage.

Not bad. I think you could effectively switch rounds between Smith and Campbell (who I love, my favorite S prospect). I think Stefon Diggs value has risen a bit, same with Cam Thomas. They may go mid to late 5th, may not be there, but those are very minor as it's a pair of 6th's. Good work, I really like this mock.

Someone is going to have to sell me on Campbell. I don't see what people are seeing in his box skills. He's a willing tackler but the one game I saw it looked like he mostly just throws his body into the ball carrier rather than wrapping up or laying the wood.

Great mock by the way. I also like Hayes Pullard. I have been a fan of Derron Smith for awhile now.

I see a lot of mocks taking Goldman, and I do believe he will be there. The reason he will be there is what scares me, and that would be his Pro Day. I don't put too much stock in these, and he was injured so he did not do anything at the combine. At his Pro Day though what scares me is only 19 reps on the bench press. You need to be very strong to play the middle, and that just screams at me he is going to need development. Plus a vertical jump of only 24", which makes me wonder if he explodes off the line. I know he is going to grow, but we need our first round pick to start, so I wonder if he is the one to take. I would prefer Kendricks, Erving, or CB instead. The others I really like.

One note, just watch the Patriots take Diggs. He screams slot player to me, and as quick as he is, he looks like he could be a Edelman clone, but not as tough!

It's all about the tape though. Goldman has functional strength. Watch his games and you'll never see him getting pushed around by lineman as he anchors. The burst off the line is definitely there too. Don't read too much into the pro day stuff.

R1 Eddie Goldman DT big sting nose could solidify the d-line and stop the run.

R2 T.j. Clemming OT can be a solid RT for years to come and solidify the o-line for years to come

R3 Tyler Lockett WR hard copy of t.y. and give us a very strong deadly receiver rotation. With t.y Johnson mocrife carter and Lockett

R4 Hayes Pullard OLB great pass rusher and could be future of the passrush team

R5 Adrian Amos SS provides great depth and great potential to be a strong SS

R6 Clayton Gaither SS very raw but could be the best safty in the draft with proper training

R6 Jarvis Harrison OG can be a very good sleeper pick and has the skill set to be a star in the nfl

R7 karlos Williams RB could make a strong push to be starting HB in years to come, very strong and stout runner

R7 Tayo Fabuluje Ol a monter at 6'9" 355lb could compete for roster spot but very raw.

I don't see it on Campbell either.  Sell me too!

Thanks guys, if he was still hurt, and that hurt his performance, then I am all for it. Especially since many seem to looked at the tape and think it is really good. He has fallen lately, but it is smoke and mirrors time. If he fell to our first round spot, I would prefer him over Phillips from Oklahoma. He scares me because of the back, and his motor.
