Some belated Luck/Pep Thoughts on a Tuesday.... (long...)

I've tried to stay out of the threads since Sunday's loss....    I know emotions are running high....

That's part of the beauty of the NFL....    every game means so much...

I'd like to share some thoughts on what I saw....

Luck's interception might've been one of the worst throws I've ever seen him make.   And I thought so even before it was intercepted.    At the time,  it was late in the game and we didn't just need to score,   we needed to score and use some clock.    So, as the pass was sailing toward the end zone I was thinking...   "unless the defender has fallen down,  why are we throwing deep?"

As to the final drive....   86 yards and roughly 4 minutes to go....   plenty of time to do whatever you want....   especially after the first few plays went well....

Then....   as we got out to close to mid-field with just over 2:00 to go,  suddenly we went to formations with either 5 wide and Luck in the shot-gun,  or 4 wide with a RB in as a blocker or to catch a check-down.    But,  the run was completely removed as an option.    And again,  I'm thinking "why?"....

There was plenty of time and the Colts announced we're throwing and no chance of running.

By doing that we just made the job for the Dolphins defense that much easier.

To make matters worse,  with Luck in the shotgun everyone knew where he'd be in the backfield... it was time to pin your ears back and rush.

I want more of Luck under center with a RB as a threat.   I want 3-step drops, 5-step drops and 7-stops and throw!    I want Pep to roll Luck out to the right and the left.   He throws very well on the run.   That will also help slow down the pass rush.   A variety of plays featuring Luck throwing from different locations will help the Colts.

But if Luck is just sitting back there 7 steps beyond the center,  then everyone in the stadium knows where he's going to be....    it's much easier for the defense,  and it's much harder for our o-line.

It's troublesome that Pep's play calling was so poor on the last drive.

Also....   I've read stories about Luck throwing to a receiver who was somewhat covered and totally missed a wide open receiver who had broken free.   This happened more than once late in the game.    Luck is going to see this on the film....    and he's going to be sick about this...  that's very un-Luck like...

I'm not expecting a win Sunday....    but I hope we play much better and give SF a heckuva game.

But even if we lose....   let's remember we started last year 1-2....   the season won't be over if history repeats itself....

Just some food for thought on a Tuesday....

That is a fact if they keep doing this to him they are painting a target on his back.

Memories of the 2008 season:

The setting, we just need a first down and we beat the Chargers in San Diego in the first round of the playoffs.  4th down.

We go empty.  No threat of a run.  I don't get why we (I know it was a different regime) do this?

Result - overtime and we got Sproled to a loss.

Actually, Hilton's spectacular jumping catch was just as bad as a decision as the INT, Hilton just made a great play. Luck needs to take better care of the football but it also seems to me he needs more targets downfield.

Pep seems to be still adjusting to gameplanning / playcalling in the NFL.

Arians was fully up to speed with the pro game.

We may have to go through a learning/adjusting phase with Pep, along with the cost of a few wins.

I think that we win the Miami game with Arians doing the playcalling, especially on the last drive.

The offense is new and it doesn't even seem like the rest of the players know it as near as much as Luck judging by some of the body language late in the fourth Q last weekend. It will take time for everyone to get used to it. I expect they will weed out the garbage and keep/alter/improve/ things they like as well as add more plays in time. This teams like a toddler, always learning, hasn't mastered or perfected anything on all fronts and won't for awhile. The talent IMO is there, however better peices can be added. We've lost two very solid additions in Ballard and Thomas. I fully expect this team to get better as the year progresses.

On the same page JoKeR I said the same thing in another post. When Luck does take a shot downfield it seems like only 1 wr going long.

How about play action calls in that situation. I would have liked that & Yes we could have still run the ball.

Like to see some more crossing/clearing out patterns that we used to run also. Seems like we are making it way harder on ourselves. Simplify it more and try to execute better. Our execution sucks. Play calling is to predictable. Seems like Luck either gets rattled or try's to force things.

    • Most of us are underpaid, difference is we move on and deal with it and barely can enjoy life. Imagine if Pat Mahome's and his wife and kids had to live paycheck to paycheck, that would be funny to see, even for 3 months
    • You have a good heart because unfortunately money rules the world. Without it, you can't do anything or live nice. I am just talking live halfway nice, nothing mind popping like buying 3 cars and a half million-dollar house. Just live in a 200,000 house (good neighborhood) and have a nice car and be able to take a Vacation once a year type of money is what I mean. To your point, being a good person with good morals is super important though . I try to treat people well and help people as much as I can.
    • Fun fact: Smith took Mike Tyson the distance, only 1 of 2 fighters to do that when Mike was Champ from 1986-1989. Tony Tucker was the other.
    • I have seen a few clips of Creed 2 on Youtube but never have watched the whole movie. I seen where Drago is in it. I thought Creed 1 was kind of average but I grew up with the Rocky movies with Rocky fighting. As far as the fights between Rocky and Clubber being short, that was fine because there were 2 of them. The way I would rank the Rocky movies would be: 1. Rocky 3 - had more action than any of them and the Creed twist was shocking. Back then there was no internet or teasers, so nobody had no idea that Creed would train Rocky. Mr T was by far the baddest villain of them all. He made people want to hate him. Hulk Hogan was even it who Rocky fought for charity  . Mick even passed away, it all kinds of twists and turns.   2. Rocky 1 - the 1st one because of the storyline. He also went the distance with GOAT = Apollo, nobody ever done that.   3. Rocky 2 - had the best fight, so I can see how that would be #1 in many eyes. That was my mom's favorite because of Adrian coming out of the coma and telling Rocky to win and the fight was the best of the whole series.   4. Rocky 4 - This one was good but not great. They could have made this much better to where it could of been the best of the series. It was kind of unrealistic because no way in real life would Apollo get killed in 2 rounds. The fight between Apollo and Drago should have at least gone 7 or 8 rounds and just show Apollo taking a beating. 2 Rounds = no way. #2, they made Drago out to be like a superhero, Rocky already beat Clubber who was just as strong, so I didn't care for the storyline. The training scenes by Rocky and Drago and the music is what saved that one from being average.
    • I hope we keep Toppin, I didn't think we would. Paul George went to Philly for 4 years/212 Mill, so now we have them to deal with as well besides Boston, NY, and Milwaukee. I thought we were better than Philly before the George deal, not sure now.
