The following vote tells me that the "Fans Voting" isn't dumb as it is made out often, but it's true that fans voting may not always get it right about the players who are under the radar, especially at a position like OT (for example, Raimann) where the stats aren't easily traceable for fans.

Did you know? Josh Metellus of Vikings led the NFL's fan voting at the strong safety position and is a second alternate for the Pro Bowl. But he actually hasn't played much safety this season. Instead, Metellus has been defensive coordinator Brian Flores' hybrid defensive "weapon." He has lined up as a defensive lineman, an outside linebacker, an inside linebacker, safety and slot cornerback and leads the team with 1,161 total snaps. -- Kevin Seifert

It’s still just a popularity contest though. It should only be players and coaches voting.

That’s “popularity” as well.  Develop “Pro-bowl metrics” for each position group.  Use only empirical data to make selections.  Take the “buddy” factor away.

I agree that Raimann got hosed, but Q didn’t deserve it.  Tunsil and Dawkins got in with pff grades of 74.1 and 73.7 (nonsense. Raimann’s 83.9).   NFL.com’s snub article indicated that Kolton Miller (80.2) was a consideration to be a top 10 snub, but didn’t mention Raimann.

"On Wednesday, Nelson became the first player in team history to earn Pro Bowl berths in each of his first six seasons.

He has played 1,074 snaps this season, more than any other player on Indianapolis’ roster.

“He’s so, so important,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said, via Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “So important to the success that we have had on offense, is how well Q has played.”"
