And I think there is miles worth of difference between not being in shape and being physically unable to play due to chronic shoulder issues.

Although he does have a weak shoulder, I heard he was recovering well from the surgery. I think he just wasn't in shape due to months of sitting on the couch and not working out due to the surgery. I think he would have been able to play next season, but the surgery probably put him out of shape and the shoulder may not have been 100%.

He's signed to a contract... I dunno that he expects big bucks as you say, but if he was realistic he most likely realized this was a probable outcome.
