loudnproudcolt
Right now it seems the Colts are in love with Roquan Smith and LB is going to be a major emphasis point in this draft. If we stick at six, which may not happen since Ballard wants to move down, but lets just say we do and take Nelson, Chubb, or Barkley. Nelson is my vote, but does not matter for this exercise. By the time we get to the second round, there will still be a lot of talent on the boards, but the top line LB talent will be gone. Seattle wants to move down, since they do not have any picks in the second and third round. Would it be worth keeping the 36th, but trading the 37th and 49th pick for the 18th if VanderEsch is there? Points match up, and it means losing one 2nd round pick we got from the trade to get what would probably be an immediate starter. I hate to trade picks, but same reason why I like whoever we get at six, quality over quantity means starting player, holds for the first LB we choose. I also have thought about Rashann Evans. The problem with him is I don't know where he is going to go, but I don't think he gets past Pittsburgh, which means we could go a second and possibly our fourth, or maybe our latest second and third. Our 36th and 100th equal 700 points, equaling the 26th or 27th pick. I would not mind at all giving away one of the seconds and the fourth, but is Evans going to be as good as BVE. I prefer BVE. richard pallo
I can see us trading back into the 1st. but it could be for any number of different players and positions. LB would be a possibility but there are other positions as well.
NewColtsFan
Ballard doesn't want to trade up. Trading up is expensive. Every trade up is one or more FEWER players we're going to draft. It takes multiple picks to move up to get one pick. Those are not the type of deals Ballard wants to do. Typically, a team that's trading up believes it's close to achieving a certain level. Either making the playoffs, or going further in the playoffs and the team thinks this ONE player might be the difference. Except, the Colts are NOT one key player away. We are MANY key players away. Two drafts and at least one more FA period away.... we need all the draft picks and FA signings we can get. Trading up is the exact opposite of what the Colts want and need right now. I think the chances of this happening are pretty close to zero.... I wouldn't rule it out completely, but I'd call it the longest of long shots. Perhaps in 2020.... but I doubt any sooner than that.
Hoose
I agree. The odds are close to zero of giving up picks. I could definitely see the opposite happening: trading a 2nd rounder to allow another team to move up, with the Colts moving a bit lower in the 2nd and getting another 3rd. Lots of talent in round 2.
NorthernBlue
Maybe if someone the colts really like drops to the bottom of the first, Ballard might be willing to drop a 2 and a late pick, but that would be unlikely because 1) With 2 early seconds, it might be worth to wait it out on any potential late first rounders 2) If someone REALLY worth it drops to the BOT 1st, my guess is another team might offer more than what Ballard would (who already preached the need for extra picks) 3) Who knows how the draft will shake up
MikeCurtis
I would ONLY do it under ONE scenario IF we go with RB, DE, LB with first pick, AND 2 of the 3 top guards are drafted ahead of us. I MIGHT dip back and get one We need a guard that can play immediately I think there are 4 total I am getting a little nervous, as I am seeking quite a few mocks with ALL 4 Guards going in round one....... THATS a problem
bananabucket
If it were Roquan falling to 18 and we didnt pick up the phone, it would be a huge mistake. But I don't think someone like LVE is worth trading up that high for. But if he's there in the late 20s, again it would be silly to not offer up our 4th rounder to go get him. People tend to overrate draft picks, if you see a talent you love then go get him (within reason)
shasta519
The only scenario I see with Ballard trading up...at least early in the draft...is if he can trade back and then only give up part of that haul to move back up and still get his player. For example, if BUF comes calling and offers #12, both 2nd rounders and a future 1st round pick. Ballard moves to #12 and then he trades back up with one of those 2nd round picks to get the guy he wanted...still netting a 2nd round pick and a future pick. Since the Colts are potentially in a position to have a QB available, they might be able to get a haul like that. And after that point, it would only be position players available...which are substantially cheaper than QBs in trade ups. I could see Ballard doing something like this, but it would take a lot falling right for the Colts.
Defjamz26
The only position you trade up for or back into the first round for is a QB. Rounds 2-7 you do whatever. But the Colts have too many holes to trade up. They need every pick. You’re likely going to see 3-4 rookie starters.
