Broncos cut punters pay

Denver announced this week that they have cut the base pay of punter Brian Colquitt from $3 mil to 1.6 mil for the 2015 season.

I guess the other option was to release him...so he agreed...I would have. If I was a punter, I would be very happy with 1.6 mil.

He was a tad overpaid.

But I think Denver has signed all their players at this point. This is something they could have done before free agency and the draft.

Why would an NFL team do this at this time of the season?

Any thoughts.

That's a pretty drastic drop from $3,000,000 to roughly $1,000,000. Is Brian Colquitt that horrible? Also, when most guys are asked to take a pay cut, it might involve hundreds of thousands of dollars not a couple of million typically. Plus, your standard of living in a said location matters. Denver is an expensive place to live just like NY & CA as opposed to say the Midwest.

Did Elway just drop this revelation this season on Brian with no warning? It's kind of abrupt with no hint in previous seasons this pay cut will be happening especially if you grow used to that base salary & then boom the other shoe drops.

Exactly OUM, this action makes no sense at this time of year in August. You don't do this now with the season just around the corner. Not good for morale. You've gotta do this say like 2-3 weeks after the season is over & Brian's contract has expired not on the brink of the season in a few weeks. It would be interesting to see the base salary of the top 5 punters around the league right now to see if the Broncos are downplaying Brian's role on the team impact wise.

Based on average punt yardage and net yardage, he was one of the lowest ranked punters in the league last year. Evidently they were ready to release him, and instead he agreed to a reduction in pay. There's nothing that says when this happened, so we don't know that it was done recently.

    • Time for this weeks prediction. I'm 1-1 thus far. I really didn't think we could conceivably lose to a qb who had only thrown 6 career passes heading into last Sundays game, but as they say."on any given Sunday the Irsay's can lose to any inferior opponent while making a journeyman qb look like an all-pro"(I paraphrased that a little, but it is historically accurate). So, onto todays game, facing a rookie qb making just his 3rd nfl. start, 4 fewer than ours, so that really balances out. If we use the offensive game plan against the Bears that we used against the Texans and mix in some deep throws we will shut up the yapping Bears defense and win. If we use the pedestrian, bland offensive game plan we used against the Packers we will lose. I am going to flip a coin, hold on-------------the coin says we will win! So I'll go with the win today. Game time at 1 o'clock, go Colts!!!!
    • I watched a Mike Tyson documentary last night, what stood out was Tyson ALWAYS took the fight to the opponent, he NEVER sat back and waited for his opponent to attack him. Maybe Gus and the Colt defense should take note of that. Against the Texans we attacked down field, the Packer game we threw ONE pass over 50 yards(last play of the game). Disappointing thus far, but onto to the Bears.
    • Where is Davis at? Also why is Grover not playing nose instead? This makes no sense to me.
    • You?    Disagree with me?!?    Gee, that only happens 24/7/365.   🙄
    • It's easy for other people to say for someone else to walk away from like $160 million guaranteed. We know your health, especially mental, is more important than money. But generation wealth & financial security for your self and family is hard to turn your back to
