2.  An Andrew Luck 1/1 autographed rookie card currently listed on eBay has a current bid of over $42,000.  Investment - OR insanity ??

Insane, and I doubt very much that it's valid. Sometimes bid's "evaporate". The second place bid is probably $1.50 (and THAT would be an absurd overpayment). 

 

The collector card business is pure hokum.

This thread made me curious enough to look a little deeper. I didn't realize that the card business was going to such clever lengths now-a-days to create demand and "value". You can buy a box of cards for a few bucks and end up with a rare (by design, not attrition - as was the case with the cards of old) autographed piece of sports memorabilia. It's like playing the lottery and probably a lot more fun. Actually it's more like Wonka's Golden ticket.

 

However the fact remains that the item is a small piece of pretty cardboard, and that it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. They may number them to create "rarity" (a very clever idea, bound to create vast interest in their cards that wouldn't exist otherwise) but said rarity is completely contrived. $42,000? That's an investment for the wealthy, and what wealthy person would consider that a good investment? You could buy a Luck autographed helmet and jersey for that price (infinitely more desirable in my view), remodel your den to show it off, and have change left over for a diamond ring and a nice car - all of which would have a better chance of holding their value. There is no "there, there".
