The trade deadline is getting pushed back two weeks. From week 6 to week 8.

The IR change is that teams WILL BE allowed to bring back one injured player later in the year with some exceptions.

Fine print details are still being ironed out.

Hm. Doubt this will help the trade deadline mean more in the NFL, but ok.

The IR rule should have already been in place. It's a great add.

Trade deadline is only going to add "will ______ be traded" headlines later in the season.

Personally, I think the trade deadline should be even later in the season if there is one at all for the regular season.

If team x has their starting QB go down, and they are willing to trade team y enough compensation for a player, then why should it be prevented.

Like Houston last season. If they would have been able to throw their # 1 at some other team, maybe they make that trade after Schaub/Leinart go down instead of riding with the rookie.

Both sides would get a benefit from it, or they wouldn't do the trade to start with.

The IR rule is an improvement, but why limit it to one player.

One "marquee" player placed on injured reserve will be able to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut, which comes Friday.

To me it's a lot like the PUP list to where multiple players can be on it and it is a lot like the DL list in base ball , which has 15-30-60 day variations. The NFL could easily go with a 4 game, 8 game , full season IR level. It helps the team get a new player on the roster, it gets the new player paid for 4-8 weeks, and it allows the injured player to return.

NFL-NFLPA AGREE TO ADOPT BYLAW PROPOSALS

INVOLVING TRADE DEADLINE, INJURED RESERVE RULES

The NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association have agreed to adopt 2012 Bylaw Proposals No. 2 and No. 6A, the NFL and NFLPA announced today.

Bylaw proposal No. 2 moves the trading deadline from Tuesday, October 16 – the Tuesday after Week 6 of the regular season – to Tuesday, October 30, the Tuesday after Week 8.

Bylaw proposal No. 6A permits clubs to re-activate one player from Reserve/Injured during the 2012 season, subject to certain restrictions.

Since this rule is being adopted after the cutdown to 75 players, for 2012 only, the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a transition procedure that permits clubs to return to their 53-player active list one player placed on Reserve/Injured since the start of preseason training camp. This selection of that player must be made no later than 9:00 p.m. ET tomorrow, Friday, August 31.

Following the cutdown to 53 players, the new Reserve/Injured rule will work as follows:

1. Only players with a “major injury” who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4, or thereafter during the season, will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time.

2. A “major injury” is defined as an injury that renders the player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks (42 calendar days) from the date of injury.

3. Each team may reactivate only one player placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4. That player must be “designated for return” at the time the club places him on Reserve/Injured, and such designation shall appear on that day’s Personnel Notice.

4. Such player is eligible to return to practice if he has been on Reserve/Injured for at least six weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve. He is eligible to return to the Active List if he has been on Reserve/Injured for at least eight weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve.

From my reading the new IR rule is basically a PUP list during the actual season. Either way I like that. The trade rule is just whatever honestly I feel a trade should be able to be made regardless of the time of year.
