Coffin Corner Punts

Polian used to talk about this. I think three things have led to it's decline.

1) It's a low percentage play. The likelihood of getting the ball out of bounds inside the five is far less than the likelihood of a touchback. Coaches prefer to err on the side of caution, rather than risk it for an extra 5-10 yards.

2) Keeping the ball in bounds allows for a pin, but it also allows for the covering team to help keep the ball out of the end zone.

3) More teams are going for it on 4th down, especially in plus territory, which is where the coffin corner punt might come into play.

I remember when Polian got killed for saying McAfee needed to work on that part of his game and yet McAfee did and got better at it and became the best punter in the league.

As for this game I think coffin corner is always nice but hang time is the key.  Give our guys time to get down there and cover it.
