Stampede Blue on Nelson vs Texans

Nelson's strength and stamina will only improve with time at the NFL level, IMO. Plus, Nelson as an OL does not come off the field for breathers like the DL do, so there is that.

I'd have to think the Bengals, Redskins, Eagles, Texans all have stout DL that will test most OL, so as a rookie, he has held up better than I thought he would. One OK game and 3 good games is definitely something to build upon.

The key is one OL is not going to win or lose a game for you, and to be fair, Clowney and Watt are different breeds of pass rushers, there are not many that are as good as they are.

I'm really starting to like these Stampede blue break downs and I'm not a huge Stampede blue fan.

But this piece does illustrate a point I've been trying to make on this forum for years and why olineman are so under appreciated.  here Nelson had a 90% success rate against the Texans and it's is worst performance to date and if you were to ask most fans they would say he got dominated by the Texans dline.  Now, his actual grade from the coaches will probably be a few points lower because they didn't really grade is run blocking but still 85-87% rate puts him in the "good" oline category.  Not bad for a rookie in his 4th game of his career, especially when you consider it probably was his worst performance.

Agility and lateral movement is where he gets beat.  When he has the opportunity to get in front of his man like a big, strong, Bull Sea Lion stuck in the sand, he's wonderful.

He can handle agility but when it comes with power as well like it comes with Clowney, it can be a handful for any OL. We saw Clowney get by Tyron Smith a few times to Dak Prescott, so it happens to the best of OL, that is why I am not too worried over time.

The scary thing for the rest of the league is that he's only going to get better.......plus he's gone up against an absolute murderers row of opponents the first month of his career and he's more than held his own. Sure he's been beaten here and there, but he's also dominated too. I think you'll see him really take over the second half of the season and beyond.

It's actually a bit refreshing to see a balanced article about the play of our interior line. Too often we just see the awesome stuff highlighted and the negative plays glossed over which makes little sense.

With 2 of our last 3 top picks playing in that area it really does need to become a strength sooner rather than later both in pass protection but also in opening up consistent running lanes.

    • Thank you for your response and thank you for enlightening myself regarding Partridge. I recall his signing but didn't know much about him until I joined this forum and read several of your posts speaking highly of him. Thank you!  I have researched him since then and have to agree with you, it is likely that his fingerprints were on this signing.    Davis' contract is such that there is no guaranteed money in his 2nd year, with a cap savings of nearly 6.5 million, so there is an out if needed. https://overthecap.com/player/raekwon-davis/8796    I have to think that his main responsibility is as Grover's back up...we all saw how much he was missed last season. Though, this is where Partridge comes in, there may be additional duties. One thing that struck me was when Partridge said (paraphrased) "that he could get Grover some more sacks.". Does that mean he plans to alter the DL scheme, and if so, could the same benefit apply to Davis? Not to mention @Douzer's thoughts of using both Davis and Grover on 3rd and short plus goal line situations...like you said, I am looking forward to watching it play out as well.
    • I'm not saying he is about to be a sack machine but you can see some of his potential as a one gap penetrator with that frame.
    • Davis came from Alabama. My point of interest as the writer highlighted is he is moving from being a 2 gapper into now only being responsible for a single gap with a lot more penetration from him versus read and react. With his length and power at 6ft 7 300 plus the expectation for him in our scheme is he will be more disruptive. A much more reliable option for us if Grover goes down in addition to whatever else maybe we can do with him.
    • Thank you. You guys are too kind, but I truly appreciate the support.    Perhaps I am being too hard on myself… But my point still stands that anyone who makes it to the NFL, whether practice squad or starter, has achieved something prestigious that only a rare few ever achieve.    Over a million high schoolers play. Of those only 7.8 percent move on to play in college.    Over 80,000 people play in college. Only 0.4 percent make it to opening day in the NFL.    Only 2,016 players make it to NFL rosters.
